and it is this ..........
I booked a slot and they charge £4.50 and that is just fine.
When I finished my shop it said ...... cos you've spent under £40.00 we are adding £4.00 to your bill.
I thought..... you are fucking not. And wiped the order.
I'll pick up what I wanted tomorrow on my way home from Manchester.
So ...... how come it costs MORE to deliver less ? There's no logic is there?
Like a taxi driver saying .... you only take up one seat so there's an extra £4.00 for you to pay on top of the fare you already paid.

I feel your pain, but if you think about it it makes sense, sort of.
You are buying stuff under 40 quid, and taking up a "space" on their delivery run.
They have overheads, van, driver etc, so they decide that the cost per slot must be over 40 quid to make it viable, and if you take up as slot worth less then they charge more to cover the difference. |

"Ask how they make that crust on tiger bread.. I've never got it to work!
Soft dough quick rise."
I thought they used a different topping dough and sesame oil, but it vaporizes so quick it doesn't leave any flavour.

Something to do with offsetting fuel costs of the delivery? Honestly - no idea... |

I see that logic BUT i'd paid for the delivery ...... I'd PAID already. All that's happened is that i'll call into sainsbury so they lost 32 quid in the end... up em I say. |

Pretty much the same as amazons £20 quid minimum order to qualify for free postage. Having established market dominance, they are now taking advantage of that. |

With one (technically 2) exceptions the supermarket lose money on every home delivery order.
They only do it as they can't afford not to and be left behind in the only growing sector of the grocery delivery market.
Tesco get, on average, 17 deliveries on each van and have an average order size around £90.
Devide the cost of paying the store picker, the van, the driver and logistics support by the number of deliveries and they get a price below which they can not except any greater loss so have to charge.
As with most, if you pick a quieter time of week you can get cheaper slots. |

Agreed, they probably have a break even margin that they will not go below...this is based upon a cross section of date and not just one order |
