I had the occasion to find myself on public transport this morning and was surprised to see a group of "spotters" at the bus station entrance; they all had notepads and cameras at the ready...
I'm not sure I understand the appeal ? Nor with train, plane or ship spotters; anyone have any insight into the phenomenon? |

Its a common 'obsession' for those on the autistic spectrum. Growing up there was a man that used to do exactly this with car registration numbers on a street corner. The local police often found it useful
Despite this he was laughed at by other locals & excluded from the community…very sad ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

Around me we get a lot of plane spotters. I can understand it to a certain point as the machines they are spotting are magnificent, fast, and not commonly seen flying around. However it's everyday noise to me, although I love to see them fly.
However, buses etc, no idea. |

A friend of mine has an autistic lad, who is obsessed with busses, so when any of our social group travel to different parts of the country, we bring back a bus ticket or timetable, he used to get frustrated trying to write, but since he found that in general, if he writes to bus companies, they will generally send him a couple if timetables or in the case of national express a model bus, his obsession has helped his education mire than being sat in a class room, so bus spoters, I salute you |

Do you think it has a hierarchy like fab?
For example do you think plane spotters look down on train spotters who look down upon bus spotters?
Or do they occasionally get plane, train and bus spotters together for parties that just get completely out of control? |

It does make you wonder, I've seen the plane spotters enjoying a nice picnic or two so I can imagine it would be a civilised affair, unless it ends up in an argument about which is best to spot ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I remember getting on a train and there was a train spotter sitting near me. He had his notebook and flask at the ready. When the train started up he practically made a loud orgasm noise so I moved the hell away from him! |

There is a whole social scene based around it.
Facebook is full of groups that cater to such hobbies.
People pay thousands to travel the globe on organised tours to see 'rare' planes.
IIRC there is a company that does an annual trip to North Korea.
I love air travel and still have a childish sense of wonderment about it, but buses, trams, trains etc ... well, yeah, they aren't harming anyone ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Ah interesting I never considered the need for order and reference and checklists etc. I do admit to wondering if I've ever been on the same plane before after I was doing almost weekly trips back and forth to the US in 2000/1 |

let them enjoy themselves how they want ... to be fair it's merely a passion for a particular kind of vehicle and no different to people who toss themselves off over performance cars or classic cars etc etc |

It's not harming anyone.
Better hobby than drinking smoking or gambling "
Depends what you want out of your hobby. I bet you get more chicks by drinking and gambling... |

"As far as I'm aware there's folks who are roundabout spotters , now I'm all for whatever floats your boat but I just can't see the attraction myself ??"
Now that's just silly, you can't spot a roundabout because it doesn't move! If anything, the roundabout spots you.
Surely the thrill, if I can use that word, is that planes, trains and buses move about so spotting them at least takes some effort to be in the right place at the right time. |
