Arrogance is a trait I dislike. I think it's ugly. And when it comes out in someone it just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
However, Confidence is a wonderful thing. Being on the scene has given me confidence and I make no apologies for that.
But sometimes confidence can turn into arrogance.
What are your thoughts on this. Just interested that's all xx |

Interesting comments!!! I do think sometimes there's a fine line.
Confidence is a great quality I think. Especially if someone has had none in the past.
But arrogance eew (shudders)

I was diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder when I was 15, so apparently it's an illness. I definitely don't "suffer" from it any more though. Life has beaten and ground me down. |

In real life I'm very confident but find it an easy balance and as such never fall on the side of arrogance as I'm reminded often of how fortune I am.
Fab confidence I'm still waiting for
Oh by the way Chilli I adore you |

Confidence comes from within and is born of self love, arrogance is a mask worn to cover low self-esteem. Arrogance comes from feeling the need to feel one-up on another to make oneself feel better |

Though it has to be said the arrogant may not be aware of the mask - most narcissists are not self-aware, and may only feel they are superior...... |

Most psychological masks are probably worn without awareness creating a false persona. Some may wear it with awareness but not realising what lies beneath. (I'm arrogant but so what....) and therefore not necessarily realise it's a mask.
I can borrow a positive characteristic and practise it until it becomes a skill or an attribute but that isn't wearing a mask (fake it until I make it) |

I don't follow your last point - are you saying it's not a mask if you are aware? |

No it's not a mask if it is skill you are trying to learn. For instance I'll fake feeling confident until I feel confident."
Ah, I see what you are saying. Thin line at times..... |

What I meant is that if I am developing a skill like behaving confidently by faking confidence until I feel confident is not the negative mask that I had been referring to, it's more like borrowing a positive behaviour until it becomes a personal characteristic. |

Some very interesting comments here. All of which are extremely poignant and meaningful.
My reason for asking this as in my life I have come across some arrogant people. And some confident people.
Not going into detail I was married to an extremely arrogant man. Who was a control freak and very narcissistic. So the whole hiding behind a mask and having deeper issues etc is quite familiar to me
I have also hidden behind humour. Perhaps it was because of low self esteem and no confidence. But it all makes sense.
humour is a wonderful thing and put with confidence can be very positive!!!!
I met arrogance recently so just wondered about people's thoughts on the topic. Yes I joke and banter on the forum daily. Makes the site interesting. People are interesting. I love to find out about people. Not in an MI6 way but just curiosity |

I totally agree with the above as its something I've done for years....
'Fake it till you make it'
Has served me well. As I'm now relatively confident, though most definitely not overly so. |

The old confidence / arrogance debate I find this gas abating as some people class me as confident however I have also been called arrogant which does annoy me as I am far from arrogant...... I prefer people that are confident and find arrogance a turn off however what I see as confidence others will say arrogance |
