Is it just me or does the coverage seem way over the top.I know it's shit what happened in Brussels, but I don't need to here a live feed coming from a reporter. He was going on and on about the mood in the city, how people are feeling, what they are having to cope with....Have the BBC forgotten how many bombs have gone off in this Country...The UK knows exactly what they are going through in Brussels.
May be it's just me,I did have a shit night at work.
It is Thursday after all
Have a nice day folks,I'm off to bed.

With some articles that make daily press, I'm unsurprised by a European terror event having live updates. |

There is a story on the bbc website of someone that survived Boston, Paris and then was injured in Brussels. Turns out he's from Boston (nowhere near the bomb), was in France (but hours away from Paris) and then injured in Brussels. I do think that story is pointless and suspect there are other similar ones as the bbc (and most other media) scrape the barrel searching for stories |

A few weeks ago, a woman in a burka was walking around with a severed child's head in Moscow, screaming "Allahu Akbar!!"...
No news channel went anywhere near it. Clearly they feel the nasty Russians deserve it. RT was the only channel that reported it. |

Odd because I saw that reportedly extensively. And go ogling it brings up links to Mail, BBC, telegraph, guardian, mirror, sky, cnn and that's without even scrolling down the page |

No, most of the people who watch and read it do...I think we get the media we deserve, switching off, complaining or not reading would change it but I guess that doesn't happen so the majority must be happy. Why change when people keep buying in to what you're offering? |

I agree I rarely watch the news or read the papers not because I'm not interested in it or want to know but I just always find it so depressing. Happy news doesn't sell I guess |

An agenda? Perhaps, it certainly doesn't harm their ratings.
24hr rolling news channels have to fill their airtime - can't help thinking that a few producer's eyes light up when something dreadful like this happens. |

The current terrorist threats are completely different from those we faced during the 70's and 80's from the IRA. ISIS terrorists have no regard for there own lives so the whole suspicious package thing is no longer relevant, what we have are people who are trained not to act suspiciously and to blend in with the general public. We live in a multicultural society and looking at the images of these terrorists who would have given them a second glance |

A certain Mr Hermann Goring came out with an interesting quote about war, which can be applied to many other areas.
"The people don't want war, but they can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and for exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country"
Basically, while there may be a chance of being caught up in a terror attack, there is also a chance of being hit by a meteorite, a falling piano or choking on a sausage, so staying alert is one thing but it suits those in power to keep you scared with the illusion that they'll look out for you. As for the BBC, there's many who refer to them as the Biased Broadcasting Company...,make of that what you will, but it's quite eye opening when you dig a bit deeper into their news reports (or lack of) |

It's been covered a lot, but it affects a lot of people. The ripple affect.
Difficult to get the balance right I guess. But you can turn the TV over or off.

I do too - but it's not zero. That's what I mean.
We don't check people entering airports before check in. Frisk people entering the underground. So you can't say it couldn't have been us. And they don't exactly like us do they? Plus they aren't rational. So ration can't apply to their thought process.
And I know we take risks just going about our everyday business.

As I was supposed to be spending the weekend in Brussels, I've been glued to the news, but to be honest, this attack comes as no surprise, so the coverage given to this by not only the BBC, and Sky, should be watched.
Not only for the sad events this week but to see exactly what's been going on in Brussels for the last few years.
There are over 1000 IS fighters from Belgium who are able to come and go as they please due to the chicken hearted government and inept security forces blaming everyone else but themselves.
I can only hope that out British secret service has more about them and can help prevent this happening here.
As for me going to Brussels, not a chance....I've been warned by a friend working for NATO there that they are on lock down as it could all happen again and soon |

This is the age of rolling news - it's the same on all the other news channels ('cept for RT/KremlinWorld & Al Jezeera [which has a whole 'nother world of horrors on it]).
They have to fill the airtime with something, every 15 mins.
So you get the footage repeated ad nauseam and then, after a day or two when it's just embarrassing rehashing the same old tripe, we move into the speculatory phase where everyone talks about what might have happened, what else could happen and what could happen near YOU.
It's probably not worth watching. |

There is a stream of thought that contends that as human beings we are not rational enough to contend with news in the way it is currently presented.
I have personally cut down massively on my news consumption, and feel far happier for it
The philosopher Rolf Dobelli has a very interesting take on it - well worth looking up. |

However bizarrely, ISIS don't actually have any kind of beef with Belgium. The killings and injuries will probably reflect on the demographic make up of Belgian population which is pretty diverse meaning that they will have meated out death and destruction on fellow Muslims. This was a completely pointless tragedy that was perpetrated by grown men who believe that their imaginary friend told them to do it. Shame that the imaginary friend couldn't also provide a reason why they should waste so many innocent people's lives including (presumably) fellow Muslims. |

I have American friends who are absolutely terrified about what happened in Brussels. They forget that in their own country an average of 3,000 people a month (100 every day) are killed or injured by themselves or their fellow citizens brandishing guns. The US news coverage focuses on American expats living in Europe and asking them if they now felt insecure and needed to "come home."
Yes it was bad shit and I guess we are going to have more of this stuff going on before it gets any better but as long as I have been alive we have had our lives at risk through one thing or another. It is easy to forget now just how close we were to Armageddon with the Cuban missile crisis and now earlier this week Obama was over in Havana for a bit of a jolly. |

"including (presumably) fellow Muslims."
You do know that Muslims aren't all one big happy family and have been murdering eachother for centuries, right?
Generally, the Shia are the more civilised ones and the Sunnis are the nutters and the two have been at it for years. In fact, Iran, Jordan and Lebanon (Shia) are the only ones who seem to have the bollocks to want to do anything about ISIS.
I dont get it when people say "but they killed other muslims" - Catholics and Protestants are both Christians and they haven't had much problem killing eachother throughout history. |

Because there are many people who try to portray it as being all Muslims against everyone else. |

Yeah 70 years, two invasions, a nuclear missile crises, 30 years of trying to assassinate it's leader, a 50 year goods and people embargo.... And all that over a difference in political ideology?.

Sort of.
My dad has developed a brain tumour and wants me to go to tie up a few loose ends over there for him (that's where he's from) before he dies.
He's probably not gonna die just yet but he's become aware of his own mortality and wants stuff attending to before his big shuffle off. |

What I'm on about is when they say..let's go live to Brussels..then you have a report stood there showing all of the front covers of the European news papers.
Lets go live to Brussels, the reporter reports..Brussels is in mourning...well who would of thought that.
It seems to me that with every event that happens, the BBC tends to turn it into a news soap opera.I learnt more information on the bombings this morning from a 1 minute news builtin on Talk Sport than watching 30 mins of so called news on the BBC. |

If you ever watched any of the other news channels seriously you would know that the BBC are far from the worst at this. CNN always first to report something, problem is the don't actually know what they are reporting. FOX getting the facts wrong and blaming left wingers regardless of is happening. SKY a subtle version of FOX but with presenters who's number 1 priority is to look pretty in front of the cameras. ITN dumbed down so much it makes newsround look intellectual. Channel 4 so left wing biased and insipid it makes the Guardian look like the Torygraph. Al Jazeera an excellent news station originally set up by BBC trained journalists. Unbiased and not afraid to report news stories that middle eastern governments want buried. Hated by the Saudis and not taken seriously by the west because so the middle eastern viewpoint.
If all the atrocities around the world hadn't been reported, how do we know about them.
Go to the USA where the world news starts at newyork and finishes at LA. where the news in the next town isn't reported never mind the next state.
The BBC news, like any big institution is not perfect but it is better than the majority of its competitors by a very long way. |
