I went to boarding school when I was 7, my dad asked me what musical instrument I wanted to learn, so I said piano. He bought me a guitar I learned a bit of that for a few yrs until I changed schools aged 13.
At my new school there was no guitar tutor, so my dad asked me what musical instrument I wanted to learn, so I said piano. He bought me a trumpet
I am now Jack of all trades and can play a little bit of guitar, trumpet and piano all badly |

I hope you have better luck with this thread than my recent post to guitarforums.com
I was banned for asking if it was true that drummers had bigger c**ks than bass players

I've been playing for five years, find myself a guitar god when nobody is there to confirm, the harder I try the harder it gets
My guitar of preference is a 2006 reissue of a 1959 Gibson es dot custom, for anything acoustic I use a Taylor and for everything else, a Gretsch black falcon with the bigsby thrown in the bin! |

I can play lead but tend to leave that to the better players " I'm teaching myself to play lead but still hooked on playing rhythm guitar did smash a guitar once but blame brandy for that one .woke up in the morning and my ex wife placed the guitar laid out on front of me In pieces so I would see the damaged regretted it .guitar is now repaired and works a treat |

I'm a drummer in a local pub band but play a number of other instruments too. I wouldn't describe myself as "a guitarist" as such but can jam my way through most tunes. I've got an Ibanez which looks like a cross between an SG and a Les Paul jr, and a Crafter acoustic.

I've got an acoustic fender I got for Christmas years ago and a piano downstairs that needs tuning. I'm quite good with music and understand the theory behind it, but I've lost a lot of my coordination. I love learning new songs but hate perfecting them until they're ready to be performed. (commitmentphobe/inability to see anything through to the end) |

I play acoustic guitar and have a Yamaha electric acoustic and a Washburn. I've been playing since 17 and play and sing Country Rock type stuff. I played in a band through my Uni years in pubs and clubs which supplemented my beer money. However since I just play at home less frequently than I'd like, but don't get around to it often enough. |

I've got a black acoustic that I was given and played for a few months and got bored. My new quest is violin xD
A good piece of software to get is Rocksmith. You can play along to various songs with it and it'll show you if you're hitting the right notes. You just need an electric pickup

I self taught when I was about 17, on a cheap Hohner guitar and Peavey Audition amp. At school we made up a little band and practiced in the drum room after school but always ended up playing Metallica tunes minus the drummer lol. Gone through a few guitar variations since but still have the amp. Sounds amazing played through a Marshall Jackhammer pedal. Find myself playing a bit more acoustic these days though. |

Yes, yes they do. "
No, they are bugger cocks, the bass player is the best of the band, he translates what the animal behind the pig skins does, to the diva posing at the front, listen to one if your favorite songs without the bass track, it will sound shit, we are the best, and the groupies love us because a guitarist can't go as deep as we can, and we don't just bash away like drummers do, we are gods lol |

Train your ears and learn that way, far more satisfying. I can't read music or tab, I just listen and figure it out. If a write a song I just remember it and if it has a solo I just make something up on the spit that fits. No need to learn complicated scales or modes once you know where all the notes are, there's only 12 to choose from anyway!

You'll build calluses pretty quickly and it becomes less painful. Its also a good idea to have the guitar set up properly as many starter guitars (and plenty of pro level ones too) have an overly high action or poorly adjusted truss rods which makes it difficult to play and even harder to learn on. |

Knowing the tart he is it was possibly the same one! I found mine on POF, here, Gaydar, several Facebook accounts, AFF and many others saying he lived everywhere from Warrington to Yorkshire to Edinburgh!! Lmao
What a knob! Admittedly a good guitarist though haha - and thankfully no longer mine (good luck to the ladies concerned!) |

Been playing for over 20+ years and still crap but self taught. Well, I write my own stuff, never been that good at learning others people's stuff except for the odd riff. Been getting better at that lately. Used to play drums in bands but only coz I was that guy, who leant to, self taught again, and got asked because there wasn't anyone else. A boat I find myself in now. Been begging across the Internet for a drummer to jam with so I can finish a project I started almost two years ago. |

Used to have a 1930's Gibson L5 that had a L7 neck. Fab sunburst, raised body.
Sold it before I escaped to a different life... About 18 years ago.
Like John Fahey, Roy Bookbinder, Peter Rowan, Doc Watson - lots of others.

i do
27 years
a level that nets me royalty cheques from 103 countries, in some cases twice a year.
jam with as many people as you can as often as you can. exercise your fingers and really try to stretch your finger reach, learn all your jazz scales and when you know them, play them quicker and quicker.
other than that enjoy yourself and always look as cool as you can. |

Pro/semi pro for over 35 years, though I'm a singer frontman. I only learned guitar well enough to adequately accompany my voice for solo work. I can pick out a few chords and melody lines on piano as well as hold down the basic rhythm patterns on drums - good enough for jam nights anyway.
I am known for my harmonica playing, I think I do this to what I'd consider professional standard, though there are a few guys I know that are a good cut above me technically.
I currently own about 15 guitars, 3 keyboards, drum kit and over 30 harmonicas, as well as full travelling PA lights and backline.
My sons are both much better musicians than I, but neither of them sing lead vocals, but they've both been in my bands over the years. |

Male half has been learning on and off for over 40 yrs!
Guitars of choice 1971 SG Special and a 2012 Les Paul Std.
For acoustic stuff I use a Fender.
Regarding proficiency, on a scale of 0 to 10, I would say I'm a 6... |

Advice? - simple - practise and more practise, and then practise some more.
It has to be "good" practise though. You need a programme to follow - I set my own, having benefited from piano and violin lessons at an early age, I knew what I wanted to achieve and how to go about it.
So look at on-line resources for a structured learning programme, or get lessons with an experienced and accomplished teacher - and then do the work.
If you do "good" practise for an hour a day, every day, for 2 years, you should be approaching basic competence, maybe good enough to hit a jam night.
I doesn't have to be a solid hour each day, 6 x 10 min micro sessions are good, but it has to be quality practise.
If you skip a day, you'll lose a week, if you skip 2 on the trot, you'll lose a month in terms of progress, especially in the early monhts. |

Oh and don't get hung up on gear. It's pointless paying £1,000 plus for a guitar unless you can already play like Hendrix/Clapton/Santana etc. Same with amps. £200 will get you a perfectly adequate guitar to learn on.
People think that if they get the same gear as their idol, they will sound like them. They won't. It's mostly in the fingers. I know many guitarists who have featured in top rock and blues bands. I've been with them when we've been noodling, and they've had a cheapo catalogue type guitar and some scratchy little practice amp, and it sill sounds just like them - it's the player not the gear, though undoubtedly, there is a difference in playability and tone when you are at a certain level. |

Try and do something every day - even if it's just 10 mins.
Obviously there is pre-disposition, but on average they reckon it takes around 10,000 hours to reach concert orchestra competence in the classical world. The skill levels of the likes of Al Dimeola, Jeff Beck, John McCloughlin, will undoubtedly have taken a similar amount of effort to achieve. |
