Mad as a hatter comes from when hat makers worked with mercury. Ingesting it caused many to suffer mental health issues hence the term.
But I still don't know where the term As Dark as Noogles Knocker comes from... |

I have not heard that, but have heard " Dark as Newgate's Knocker" which refers to the knocker on the door of Newgate Prison" and means both literally dark, but more often " sinister" |
