Why do we always have to reduce everything to conflict. Wouldn't it be better if instead of debating people worked together to find out the facts of what they are talking about instead of arguing or debating against each other? Usually with debates, no-one changes their view/minds so it's pointless and not very productive. Couldn't we learn co-cooperatively...A lot of the time it seems that people just want to be right instead of find out the facts. It's like a fear of being wrong. I think debating isn't intelligent. I'm not saying people who debate are not intelligent. The act isn't intelligent. The people maybe just haven't thought of a more productive alternative. |

Why do you assume that everyone in a debate isn't willing to learn from the people they're debating with? I try to remain open to other points of view and look at arguments from different angles. I don't think it's possible for people to learn the facts about anything without some debate because it would necessitate everyone looking at the facts with the same mind set. |

I'm not sure if you just called me a narrow minded bigot or not lol.. If you did then you've misunderstood. I don't mean when people call each other names and insults etc..I mean even mature normal debates. I'm saying it might be better if people work together to learn rather than debate against each other. |

But we only truly learn by challenging what we see and if we work together that's unlikely. |

Perhaps not literally everyone on the planet is unwilling to learn but if learning is the goal then working together would be better. Yes it may require the same mind set in terms of working together. People don't have to go in with the same ideas just the overall thing of agreeing to work together to learn. |

What? That's not a quantitative thing?
If you call someone a bigot, sexist etc that just shuts down the argument. Not that hard to understand |

I disagree, actually had a debate with someone on this thread today. By the end we agreed on a few points. It is good to see how you can come at a topic from two different points but still agree the core points.
I like learning other peoples perspectives and finding things i didnt know. Its only an argument if someone reduces to being childish and throwing personal insults or patronising to make a point.
Personally i enjoy and get a lot from debates
But i would say on here there are one or two that wait in the wings for someone to not explain properly their point. They then jump on that person and try to tear into them. When if they just learned to listen and ask questions they night learn something xx |

Lots of members = lots of different personalities and levels of intelligence = lots of different perspectives on issues. Some people like banter, some prefer the more serious approach, others are naturally confrontational...etc. Throw in the ole "freedom of speech" act and, voila!! You have the unavoidable mass-debate! Its human nature |

Indeed : )
I think it's more cultural though than nature.
Squirrels are so cool. I heard them "talking" to each other once. Sounded so weird. They make really weird little squeaky sounds lol and jump between trees... |

Quite! Some times we can learn from it. If whoever is debating are all willing to be wrong and not link it to ego and see it as a learning experience then it can work out good. I think it's possibly because we have a culture that makes out that it's bad to be proven wrong when being shown to be wrong is a good thing because then our consciousness has been expanded. We've learnt something. Maybe my issue is that debate is a form of conflict even when it's polite so it's more the train of thought compared to the train of thought that would want to cooperate rather than compete to see who's right. |

Also its ok for both parties to not agree and no one be wrong. Opinions are personal and eveyone has the right to theirs.

I think that learning is not the aim of a debate. A debate is essentially making your case in such a way that you win the debate. Learning in conversations for me comes from the sharing meaning and developing understanding of different perspectives. That, in my mind, is the aim of dialogue. If you see a conversation as a debate then winning the debate is often the aim. If you see it as a dialogue then the flow of meaning is the aim and the quality of the conversation is quite different.

In regards to the stuff about us being entitled to our opinions, is that such a good thing?
I don't mean that we shouldn't be allowed opinions cause that would stupid..
But for example, it's a pedophiles opinion that it's ok to sexually abuse kids and as a result they abuse kids and traumatize people. I know that's an extreme example but my point is that opinions can be dangerous. We talk about having the 'right' to opinions but there's usually less talk about the responsibility side of it. Our opinions affect other people, good or bad, so even though they are personal they have consequences that affect others. Someones political opinion will affect how they vote which will then go on to affect others depending on who gets elected. Our opinions have social consequences so our opinions come with responsibility as well as rights..
I value facts over opinions and if I don't know something or don't have enough information then I'll say I don't know instead of having an opinion. We don't really need opinions. We need facts and the ability to be ok with not knowing some things... |

It's the forum assassins who go for the throat when they see a post mid thread, and go for the kill without reading the full thread first. If they had taken time to read the thread first, you see the offending post in a different light.
Keep seeing this time and time again.

Why don't you fucking just lobotomise the universe ?
Or kill everyone instead.
Please look up opinion, and consider it substantiated with solid argument or unsubstantiated, unverified etc etc......
Without thought we are nothing. |

Facts? What is a fact? Can we say anything is really a fact? Or is there a degree of subjectivity behind every so called fact? Can the assumptions behind facts be uncovered and challenged? |

Yes facts are not set in stone. But they are backed up with the evidence at the time so that is the best we have to go on. One of the things I love about science is that facts can change with new evidence. That doesn't always happen as science isn't pure in this system but it's the best we've got at the moment.
If I need surgery I'd rather the surgeon used the medical facts they have learn't to help me rather than someone without those facts and was operating on me based on opinion. Opinions and facts can be wrong but facts are more backed up so safer which is the difference |

I'm going to try and phrase this well, I'm not standing up for pedos haha. It's just if you give the government the right to take away someone's freedom of speech, where do they stop? Once you set the precedent, you're screwed, when they come for your freedom of speech, no one will be able to stand up for you |

Yes it would be better to not just accept the propoganda of politics
I don't think it's about people not having the right to act on opinions as rights don't really relate to anything biologically. People do act on their opinions regardless and they make laws because they don't know how to solve the problem. Sometimes we can act on our opinions with good intentions though also but bad things can happen with good intentions |

Yes we should definitely keep freedom of speech
But it's not up to the government. It's up to us to change our way of thinking and then society changes with it. We should have the right to opinions but we don't need them and they can be dangerous and are very damaging socially even if there are good intentions |

If facts can be changed based on new evidence and opinions can be changed based on evidence, are facts not just opinions or theories, with evidence that confirm that opinion is valid, based on the evidence presented? Oh yes, I see what you mean
I think we have laws when they don't know how to solve a problem though. If they could solve the problem so that certain people don't want to abuse kids anymore then the law isn't needed cause the problem is solved. But getting to the point of having no laws would mean a much bigger change and probably won't happen anytime soon if ever... |

What a boring world it would be if we all agreed on everything all the time! Conflict and disagreement cannot be avoided because my interpretation of the "facts" are never going to always agree with everyone else's interpretation of the "facts"; my life experiences, education, and environment will always impact my views. |

I think it depends on the specific fact. It's a fact that round wheels work better to move cars than square ones and that seems pretty solid. But the other type of facts are the ones that can't be proven or disproven for definite so are based on the current evidence to show the highest probability at the time. So those types of facts are similar to opinions but more substantiated as you say. An unsubstantiated opinion would be something that isn't backed up with current evidence/findings...
Opinions are like baby facts lol..sort of.. |

We all have the right to an opnion however backwards and unsavoury. We dont have the right to act on all those opnions.
Thats why we have laws. As for politics theres often several solutions you choose the onethats best for you because never will everyone agree. People should do more research into the things they vote for instead of accepting politicians and the propagnda at face value though
Yes it would be better to not just accept the propoganda of politics
I don't think it's about people not having the right to act on opinions as rights don't really relate to anything biologically. People do act on their opinions regardless and they make laws because they don't know how to solve the problem. Sometimes we can act on our opinions with good intentions though also but bad things can happen with good intentions
I was thinking of of peodophilia example you gave. It may be their opinion but they dont have the right to act on it. So we have laws..They know its wrong or groups like PIE and NCC wouldnt exist it's like the saying, your rights end where others begin
Not sure what you mean can you give me an example?"
I'm not sure how to explain it, you just don't have the right to do things if it negatively affects someone else |

"What a boring world it would be if we all agreed on everything all the time! Conflict and disagreement cannot be avoided because my interpretation of the "facts" are never going to always agree with everyone else's interpretation of the "facts"; my life experiences, education, and environment will always impact my views."
That would be an example of an opinion. We've never experienced a world where everyone agreed so we don't know if it would be boring so it's not a fact that it would be boring. We don't know.
If we go on facts that doesn't mean we all become clones. People would still have different music tastes, fashion style etc... There's still the difference between agreeing and tastes/preferences |

Opinions and facts can be wrong but facts are more backed up so safer which is the difference
If facts can be changed based on new evidence and opinions can be changed based on evidence, are facts not just opinions or theories, with evidence that confirm that opinion is valid, based on the evidence presented? Should new evidence show the fact wasn't a fact, is it nothing more than a substantiated opinion?
I think it depends on the specific fact. It's a fact that round wheels work better to move cars than square ones and that seems pretty solid. But the other type of facts are the ones that can't be proven or disproven for definite so are based on the current evidence to show the highest probability at the time. So those types of facts are similar to opinions but more substantiated as you say. An unsubstantiated opinion would be something that isn't backed up with current evidence/findings...
Opinions are like baby facts lol..sort of.."
Indeed they are like baby facts and need nurturing and challenging so the opinion grows into a more meaningful opinion based on evidence that can be verified and validated by others. Could it be that all of our 'valuable facts' grew from someone's opinion? |

Another kink in your, can't we all just get along theory, is that most subjects are not as simple as one fact. Take gun control...fact--crime rates drop after a state adopts concealed carry...also a fact--guns are used daily to kill...another fact--guns are used daily to save lives...fact--millions of guns are owned by responsible citizens who will never use those guns in a crime....all of these facts come into play in a discussion on gun control but I can almost certainly guarantee that your opinion on gun control is not gonna be the same as mine! |

We're not robots no but our bodies are biological machines and subject to the limits of nature and our ability to use our knowledge to expand those limits. Emotions being important in decisions would depend on what the decision is about. We can be objective about some things. To use the surgery analogue again, it would be objective to pick a professional surgeon to operate on me rather than a car mechanic with no medical training |

I would say the difference between an opinion and a theory in that situation would be that the theory is more like a prediction with a question and then they test it. An opinion is more when someone isn't questioning. When they question it becomes a theory (in that situation at least). |

I hold a concealed carry license and there is a handgun on my nightstand. My opinion based on the facts as I interpret them is that gun control will only stop honest, law-abiding citizens. The quantity of guns in the US makes confiscation of them all impossible! |

We're not robots no but our bodies are biological machines and subject to the limits of nature and our ability to use our knowledge to expand those limits. Emotions being important in decisions would depend on what the decision is about. We can be objective about some things. To use the surgery analogue again, it would be objective to pick a professional surgeon to operate on me rather than a car mechanic with no medical training
You think a politician will do what's best for the people? Or what's best for his rich buddies and backers?
Depends who the politician is. " Politicians are a bit like sperm, one in a million turns out to be a human being |

"What a boring world it would be if we all agreed on everything all the time! Conflict and disagreement cannot be avoided because my interpretation of the "facts" are never going to always agree with everyone else's interpretation of the "facts"; my life experiences, education, and environment will always impact my views.
That would be an example of an opinion. We've never experienced a world where everyone agreed so we don't know if it would be boring so it's not a fact that it would be boring. We don't know.

"Another thing, especially in American colleges and stuff, they try and stop debates. They have their "progressive" views and don't want them challenged. Like the guy before said they need to be challenged to grow yet it's happening less Then we should challenge that
If you do they'll call you a racist and protest, anything to avoid learning new thing
Surely you would only be called a racist if your opinion could be construed as racist?
Not really, anyone who challenges Black Lives Matter and Mizzou are white supremacists apparently "
I can't speak about your example as I don't know anything about it, but sometimes the approach taken is what causes the difficulties and not necessarily the inquiry into the assumptions behind these things. |

That's more of an American thing, so I've not experienced it, I'm just forwarding the opinions of those that have and are in a good position to make those opinions on the matter |

Sometimes people misinterpret things though "
Of course, then iis it our responsibility as the communicator to reduce the misunderstanding and help convey our meaning more effectively? |

Yeh I definitely agree with that. I'm trying to get better at explaining things I mean. Doesn't always work but we can try : ) |
