Magnolia bored me so much, the concept was pretty but exploited badly... too long and the biblical end of it spoil everything.

Someone I met off another site took me to see the film about princess Diana. Omg!!!!! What a load of crap that was!! I wanted to walk out but he wouldn't let me. I didn't see him again after that

Whilst I don't think it's a terrible film, I marvel at the lofty heights it has achieved. I think it's overlong, simplistic with an unnecessary Hollywood ending, and dreadfully dull. Morgan Freeman gives a decent performance, but I find Tim Robbins unbearable.

Whilst not the best Cohen Brothers film, it has it's moments and it's quite watchable.

I think an appreciation of golden age Hollywood films helps, as you can see what they were trying to achieve. However I believe it lacks a central focus to the story which keeps it from being ultimately engaging (unlike say, O'Brother where art thou).

I thought " birdman " was awful , won a couple awards but just didn't see what was so good bout it , didn't like camera work of it all and got pretty bored with the storyline .

I like the Cohen Brothers a lot, they make true cinema rather than just movies. And while a lot of people don't like that, people who love cinema do.

That's what Hail, Caesar! was, it was an ode to post-war Hollywood during the golden age. And it was not only a parody of the genre movies which were popular at the time. It is a parody of cinema itself.

It has a wacky, irrelevant plot and if you accept that you can have a lot of fun. Like Birdman (which has been mentioned already in this thread) which was a film made for film-makers, this is a film for classic-cinephiles. Not in a snobbish or elitist sort of way, but more in terms of taste.

Love the Coen brothers and really looking forward to seeing this, and agree with your sentiments.

Wasn't at all convinced by "Birdman" though.

That sums up what I thought. I enjoyed it as a pastiche/send up of the 1950s studio system and the red under the bed paranoia that led to the McCarthy witch hunts.

In fact I'd watch it again for the spoof On The Town musical number, complete with not so subliminal message about the sexuality of sailors (which anyone who left afte 25 minutes missed).
