Just leaving the lovely city of Chester for the delights of Cardiff, and it never ceases to amaze me how many reserved seats are empty
Have they just gone and sat in any old seat, or not turned up ?
Seems to me that a lot of money is spent on tickets that are never used |

I take my own seat...... it's one of those transparent candy-pink inflatable armchairs.....
I like watching the expression on the faces of passengers when it makes a loud fart sound whenever I get-up or sit-down...
Hours and hours of amusement....
Actually non of that it true...

"If you book via trainline they automatically book a seat, I don't think I've ever sat in the seat that was allocated to me. "
Normally the reserve tickeg will say between two stations. or maybe they missed the train.
Just been (yesterday) on the Fort William to Mallaig journey. Great journey.. nice weather. |

But doesn't that mean your allocated seat is probably empty meaning some maybe going without? |

A lot of business travellers buy open tickets which mean they can travel on any train. This gives them flexibility should their plans change and also allow for a full refund should their trip be cancelled. It is not uncommon for them to have seats booked on several different trains, hence the number of seemingly empty booked seats. |

When I travel by train I usually reserve seats if possible - it costs nothing so why not?
I reserve seats on the train I am most likely to catch but sometimes I'm early or late and get another train.
Unless they are the old fashioned trains (with reservations stuck in the seats) people take no notice anyway and I simply politely ask them to move when I arrive and point out that it is reserved. Some are half expecting it and vacate the seat quite happily others less so. |

I've never agreed with seat reservations and I've worked in railway operations for twenty years. All reservations do is cause friction and arguments. Chiltern Railways have the best idea, if a seat is empty it's yours. |
