It depends where you go.
I took my very elderly parents shopping in a posh supermarket at the weekend. My mum has very poor mobility, the aisles were blocked with those wire cage things and pricing trolleys, the checkout person chucked the stuff through before my partially sighted father managed to load it on the belt and my poor mum had to negotiate obstacles to find somewhere to sit while dad and I packed and paid. But it's ok because you can have free coffee while you browse the organic yogurt.
However I went to Aldi for my shopping and the checkout person waited until all my stuff was on the belt, the aisles were wide and easily negotiated and all the staff were unfailingly polite.
