After a newer car.. and i quite liked the Peugeot 207 or 307 but my granddad thinks they are expensive to repair when they go wrong.
Was looking at Mazda2, Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, or the Peugeot 207
Something about a 1.4/1.6.. nothing too big physical size wise either. My parking is shocking lol |

Honda and Toyota are the most reliable, parts can be pricey when they go wrong, but that is very rare. I have owned both and they never cost a penny, wives current car I a Mitsubishi had it 8 years not had a thing go wrong with it. |

I work in the motor trade... Mazda parts are expensive, don't get anything French so stay away from Peugeot, Citroën and Renault, keep away from Fiat lol Ford fiesta is a good car and cheap to run, anything German is good but bmw and Mercedes parts are expensive so maybe vw, skoda or seat? |

go on euro car parts and type in the reg so you can get an idea of parts prices before making the purchase,
from my own experience's
ford, cheap parts but forever going wrong and needing them,
Vauxhall, reasonably priced parts some bits can be difficult to obtain but when they are sorted they last a fair time,
Mercedes, bloody expensive but rarely needed once the car is up together
Peugeot, reasonably priced parts can be a pita to work on though. same for citroen.
BMW/Jaguar about the same as mercedes. |

"ford fiestas are cheap and easy to get spares a nd you should be able to see all the corners .. Easy to park " also .. Get a late model just before the next new shape comes out as most of the problems will be ironed out |

Look at the JDPower survey details of car reliability rather than to each of our own prejudices.
It's here: http://www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2015-uk-vehicle-dependability-study-vds
Whatever people say, looks like according to the facts, Peugeot wins out on reliability over Honda and Ford for reliability.
And if it ever does brake down , get a quote from your local garage, tell them that you've got it for 25% less from another garage, and ask them for the best deal they can do for you. |

"I'm not sure any makes of car are cheap to repair unless you can fix them yourself. Cuts down on labour costs "
Tend to agree. If you rely on garage repairs, as most people do, then I don't think there is much in it. I think costs can be kept lower by choosing a car without too many refinements and unnecessary gizmos, but it's a lot of pot luck. It helps if you have good mechanics/technicians as friends, as we do. In my case it makes home repairs a lot more viable. |

No car is cheap parts not the problem it's the time and garage labour you are paying for.. Most cars have copy low cost parts avalable... Your best bet is a car that is common so stick to your fords, vauxhalls ect am guessing you be looking at 1.2,1.4 as you don't want be paying silly high road tax... And stay away from French and Italian cars any vehicle technician will agree with me on that.
So Ford Focus Ford Fiesta Vauxhall Corsa, Astra Adam ect... And stay away from diesel as no good for around town and there is going be a high road tax increase coming on diesel vehicles over next 18 months ... |

part prices are mostly irrelevant, if car a has a part at half the price but it breaks 4 times quicker, it's more expensive to run.
look for 50,000 mile reviews, that gives a good idea of real cost of ownership. |

"Skoda, cheap considering they're VW and as reliable as you parents."
I looked at Skoda's , before buying a Passat. The Octavia is pretty much the same car, but the price difference was negligible. Think everyone has cottoned on to the fact that Skoda's are now a quality car, but prices reflect. |

Would be my first choice ! And correctly sourced parts needn't be too expensive. |

Ford, vauxhall, skoda.. yep. Had VX for years with minimal hassle (Astras), currentlygot a 2000 reg Astra and 04 reg corsa auto on the drive, keeping my daily driver (Fiesta based Ford Fusion, lovely little high up machine) company.
none have cost a lot really, to buy or run. Ex had a fabia1 as a first car. . good little rig. Then when we split she bought a jazz... expensive, leaky and hideously unreliable. She's gone back to Fabia again. heh. |

Id stay well clear of French cars as they don't really have a good reputation as long lasting on the other hand there's a lot of in the scrap yards for cheap parts but I'd recommend a German built car after all they have been best engineers of the current time |

Besides the cost a merc looks like an old ladies car
We had a Fabia - really good car and really economical.
Had a Toyota before that & a Honda now - been lucky that they proved to be as reliable as their reputation (so far) but have also been warned about the cost of parts.

Mitsubishi Colt.
Awesome little cars. Wouldn't trade mine for the world.
They're like little tardis'inside. Pretty economical. It costs me next to nothing to run.
Parts aren't too bad, especially as I know a bloke who works in the mitsubishi dealership who does my servicing out of hours and uses genuine parts at cost price!score

None of the newer cars are cheap to repair, the engine is now all controlled by a computer and sensors....so when anything does go wrong unless it's something straight forward then you will replace piece by piece until the computer diagnostics actually finds the right fault..... The fault it actually shows may not be the correct problem, but has been caused by another issue....I speak from frustration....
Just buy the car you like as you will be fleeced with repairs what ever car you buy... |

I've got a Honda (thankfully from new so still under warranty) had three batteries replaced so far, no end of electronic problems and they keep telling the electric shocks are nothing to do with the issues, even though they did not start until 2nd battery is fitted....
All vehicles makes and models have issue, you either get a good one or a bad one simple as.......
Had cars that have done 400k + never broke down so long as serviced at right time..... Yet the last two new ones I've had, both have had issues |

Ford focus....2003/05 model not only cheap to repair...they hardly go wrong and need little for mot if regular maintenace is done which isn't much tbh. Oh cheap insurance... £30 tax and if diesel. ..60 to 70 mpg depending on how you drive it... |

My vehicle is now over 20 years old, I've owned it about 15/16 years, 360k miles, never broke down ever, about 2 or 3 things a year get replaced/changed at roughly about £500 cost, a full service costs about £75 in parts, tax is 240ish and about the same for insurance.
It's very easy to fix as everything's nuts and bolts or basic motors!
It fits my needs perfectly and I must admit I've saved probably tens of thousands from keeping the same vehicle for so long rather than upgrading it constantly |
