Does anybody agree or disagree about having to re- sit driving tests every say 5 years, as there are some truely awful drivers out there

I can't drive anymore due to my eyesight but if I could, I would not be happy about re sitting the test, they cost a bloody fortune

The only 2 winners would be the driving instructors and the Goverment who would screw us for more money

They are trying to cut (the government) 20% of the DSA budget over the next Two years, they are closing driving test centres all over the country....

Where would the money be coming from for 5 year re-tests?

Well obviously money would come from us and i know driving test centres are closing down, but since accidents cost on average 1 million pounds more for a fatality it would save money in long run

The way I see it is we have a Police force who get paid good money, let them continue to decide who drives dangerously....without due care and attention.....recklessly.

Have you ever considered that other motorists may sometimes find YOUR driving to be one of the above?

Seeing ones self as being perfect and faultless can sometimes be a form of self delusion.

And that is not aimed specifically at the OP....we ALL find it hard to see faults in ourselves.

I kinda know where your coming from but i don't think re-tests is the option i'd go for , but i think part of the test should be a car control and avoidance control course like a lot of tracks offer on skid pads controling under and oversteer and correct use of traction , which most instructors overlook as its not a required part of the driving test , only an opinion but would improve skills sadly often lacking and costing lives

Do not consider my self to be a faultless driver and have a full motorcycle licence and a full car licence both passed when i was 17 which is nearly 30 years ago. One of the biggest killers on the road is peeople who passed there motorcycle test at 17 then passed there car tests a year later and never touched another bike again. 30 years later mortgage paid and kids grown up they return to biking, and believe me bikes now can not be compared to bikes in the 80's. By the way i have always had a bike and a car

I don't see what it would achieve. Bad drivers would only have to behave for the duration of the test and then they could go back to their previous poor behaviour.

I confess I don't have the statistics but I suspect most motorcyclists involved in fatal accidents only kill themselves and/ or their pillion passenger.

There has been talk of some insurance companies bringing in black boxes and fitted cameras in cars. Which records everything you do whilst driving. So if you have an accident it is saved to the hard drive and used as evidence. Also if 5 miles down the road you were speeding/tailgating/using a mobile phone there would be hard evidence, and your insurance premium adjusted accordingly.

Think this may help stop a lot of bad driving from all parties. We have already asked to test them when my insurance company has them available.

No we are not perfect drivers, nobody is.

Always seemed a rather curious stae of affairs...where you can pass a driving test without showing any compentency of night time driving and once I pass I could dive onto a busy motorway ...

No evidence of planning ahead or reading the road ...just plain daft ....whats the rationale?..beats me ..

Some form of retest is a good idea...

I consider my driving to be excellent, i speed cut people up and take far too many risks. The rest of the driving public will consider me a danger, but if the police dont catch me im ok.

tests every 5 yrs is a great idea and I would back it if it cost me or not.

the problem there is tests only say who can drive good on the day, once test is passed its back to driving like a nutter for many, me included.

only good thing in my favour, living in spain you have to drive like a twat its the law.....

My driving licence has an expiry date of 2035 - my 70th birthday. So long as I don't do anything that results in a ban (or an accumulation of 12 points) I see no reason for me to re-sit my driving test every 5 years. The only exception to that would be on the specific recommendation from my doctor or my optician that I should re-sit my test. And to be honest, if my dr or opto was to recommend that, I'd take them pretty seriously as I value my life.

What is it with this obsession with driving etiquette and rules and regs like in that other thread?

We should be like the Italians, they all drive like nuts and therefore most are quite skilfull (not to say there isn't a bit of carnage), even young girls and old people ride/drive flat out whenever possible.
