Its not all HMRC fault. The agency have to inform HMRC in writing that you are not self employed. No good you just ringing

Write or email as opposed to phoning, make sure you keep all correspondence then you have evidence of it goes to court or appeal.

The HRMC are understaffed and have a lot of poorly paid and poorly trained people on help lines.

My other half had the same problem, his fines went back 8 or 9 years, they had changed his tax code to take back the money as well. I am a bookkeeper and dealt with it for him in the end. His fines were upto £6k !!!! I couldn't believe it! He phoned HMRC and then gave me authority to speak on his behalf! I was told to write to them, which I did. It does take a while to get a reply but they wiped out all his fines and had to give him some tax back and amend his tax code back. Don't worry it is sortable but just a major pain in the behind

been trying to sort this out myself for a few years. Write everything with a proof of postage. Still arguing my case... Still getting told why haven't I filled in self assessments... Don't seem to understand the fact because I'm not self employed.

That's what happens when the pay and conditions are reduced and you make over half of the "non essential", "back office", "pen pushing", "bureaucratic" people who worked there redundant and the remaining staff are left doing the jobs of three people. Suck it up.

I've also had countless problems with them over the years - it's frankly criminal that they are such an inept bunch of cowboys.

Just got to keep on it until it's sorted I'm afraid.

I sympathise with your problem,

But it's down to the government 'saving' money.

Any of the low level staff could have told them that cutting staff means worse service and less tax income (Google, Vodafone, Amazon etc) but it was dismissed as fat cat civil servants protecting their cushy jobs.

What I have found the worst is that you can't email them.... You have to call or write and apparently over half of my letters have never been received... And not one of my complaint letters has been replied to. Every other company I've been able to deal with via email and therefore have proof of what was said on both sides.

Was run by Lin Homer, a byword for failure from one department to another and I believe she was recently shortlisted/awarded an OBE.

Coleford, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

You have my sympathy Blancmange (Phil) with regard to HMRC.

After BT (and their service is abominable) I have never come across such incompetence.

HMRC are consistently getting my tax wrong. I am not rich and have never been a huge earner - around £24,000 per annum in my last job. I am now retired but won't receive my state pension for another six months. Until then my income is based upon four private pensions which together give me about £8,500 per annum.

Imagine my surprise when HMRC wrote to me that I would be paying 40% tax on all four occupational pensions.

At least once a month I have to ring them as they keep getting my tax situation wrong. My simple question is if I am allowed an annual income, like all of us of £10,600 why am I paying tax at all ?

The last time I contacted them in February the woman I spoke to was so rude and dismissive I had no option but to make an official complaint. Ironically when I asked to speak to someone else I spoke to an Eastern European woman who was both understanding and actually knew what she was talking about.

I personally lay the blame at the Government's door as they are so intent on cutting back on all of our public services that they simply cannot cope. Just witness the NHS,Social Care etc which are all failing us.

What absolutely infuriates me is the HMRC are constantly getting it wrong with ordinary people like me but at the same time allow these massively profitable multinationals to avoid paying the tax they owe - Google, Starbucks, Facebook etc.

So the UK economy is booming according to Cameron and Osborne but I would suggest the UK economic future would be rosier if they taxed their rich pals and forced them to pay their fair share.

And before anyone asks may I say that I am not a jealous lefty communist whinger who envies the rich.

But for God's sake let's make the rax system fairer.

My understanding is that ANYONE can be asked to fill in a Self Assessment form. I don't think its related to being Self Employed. I know lots of people that aren't that have to do them every year.

When you fill out the form, it asks you if you're employed or self-employed, which suggests that HMRC themselves make no distinction between the two.

Also, I wouldn't rely on advice from a forum (even mine!!), because it may not be correct & you'll still be liable for any fines incurred…after so many months they start charging £10 per day until you submit a form

I would be contacting my local CAB for free tax advice asap!

by the big field

Start invoicing them per hour of time spent dealing with it, per letter sent and phone call made. Record everything and if they still haven't budged in 6 months, try issuing a letter before proceedings to their legal department for the outstanding invoices

Yes you can be asked to fill in a self assessment form even if just employed. I have filled them out when an employee before, plus if you have any other incomes apart from your normal wages you should fill them out as standard I.e. rental income, capital gains, etc.
