When I was a kid we'd be sent-off to play on the beach with a packed lunch which usually consisted of egg and tomato sandwiches and a large bottle of liquorice water to be shared...
The youngest kid always got last swig from the bottle which was usually by then heavily contaminated with lots of floaty bits from the egg and tomato sandwiches ....

Cheap chemist's liquorice dropped in a an empty bottle which was then filled with tap water (aka corporation pop) and left in a dark cupboard to infuse the flavour...
