I shall be attending Crufts this weekend as I do every year. Love the Discover Dogs as well as the agility, police and gundog shows and heelwork to music, as well as it being doggy shopping heaven.
It is however a very long day with dogs kept in their wooden open crates for hour's until it's time to take to the ring.
What are your views on the greatest dog show ever and similarly showing dogs in general.

I read an article yesterday about the state of dog breeds today as opposed to a hundred years ago. It made me sad. I wish they could concentrate on a dog that was healthy rather than its bloodlines and standard.
One of the reasons I have a Dorset Olde Tyme Bulldog. |

I used to watch dog shows all the time.
Then I heard the American Kennel Club (AKC) wouldn't let tv networks show commercials for dog adopting during the dog shows they host because it didn't align with their philosophy.
I no longer watch dog shows. Horrible horrible ideology. |

Not my thing to be honest
There are to many inbread dogs with health problems in the name of show standard for my likings
I have a greyhound and a Labrador, neither reach show standards but regardless of that I don't need to take my dogs to cruffs to know they are the best looking dogs anyway ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

there was a really good doc about this last year...it showed the difference in photos/paintings of breeds in the past, and then how they have been so distorted by inbreeding...it was pretty disgusting |

I like to see all the different breeds and just love dogs in general..I do think it's sad that some dogs are bred to show and that means various health problems etc
I love my little mutt..The only category she might win best in show for is 'dog who thinks she is most human'!! |

The rhodesian ridgeback is a prime example
The hair grows the wrong way down their spine due to a deliberate bred deformity of the spin that give that effect
Dogs that are born without the ridge are actually the healthy ones but can't be shown or bred because they aren't upto standard

The Breeder we got our dachshund from was into the show dogs business.
On his paperwork it's 50% championship dogs in his ancestry. she also bred with dogs from America to widen the gene pool as she put it. She asked if we wanted to show him but we just wanted him as part of the family and not a trophy. He's got show potential put its not something we're interested in.
He has to a rosette from a charity dog show before he was a year old for dog in best condition.
Hardly crufts but it was a great day and raised a hell of a lot of money for good causes. |

I have to admit I prefer a pedigree dog, that is because you know how big is going to get, have an idea of the characteristics and you know what your dog is going to look like.
The Kennel Club have guidelines in relation to breeding. You cannot breed dogs that are too closely related and the bitch cannot have litters too regularly, I think a gap of 2 years is required, and only have 3 litters in total. They also have genetic testing. The Kennel Club wouldn't register puppies ourside of these guidelines and you couldn't show a dog without a pedigree certificate.
That said though, I wouldnt like to show a dog or breed from it. The financial gain part of it makes me uncomfortable.
But a lot of us like pedigree dogs, you only have to read the dogs threads to see the various breeds that we all own.
Recently the requirement for non moulting dogs to combat allergies has given us the Cockerpoo, labradoodle and the like. Whilst not pedigree dogs, these crossbreeds are very popular, I wonder if in a few years time they will become a breed within their own right.

"Give me a Mongal any day, none of this poodle crossed between a Great Dane not a fan of crufts to be honest "
Those type of dogs are not primarily shown at Crufts because as use they are not pedigree dogs. They do have Scruffs, a section for the crossbreeds though ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Using animals as trophies and playthings has never really appealed to be honest.
Dogs used to live a lot longer until we started messing with them so they got shinier coats or shorter snouts.
I think the whole dog breeding thing is barbaric and would like crufts to be banned.
The " ooh look here's Henrietta with her dog Golden Foulteneroy lactiva of ponsenby. Look at the way he jumps through hoops," makes me very uncomfortable.
We've gone a long way in banning animals from circuses so why this is allowed to continue is beyond me. |

I get so wound up by the "breed" and "pedigree" stuff.
Two French bulldog experts this evening saying that there are only three "proper" colours for a bulldog and anything else might be an indication of ill health.
FFS, "breeds" originated from different dogs copulating, producing a unique form ... And then progressive inbreeding.
A lovely dog is a dog with character. Not a dog with an X inch hip bone and a Y inch snout. |

I agree that there are some beautiful crossbreeds. I love dogs and they are great companions regardless of having a 8 generation certificate.
However Crufts is a dog show, an elite gathering of pedigree show dogs. Just like any other show, you are going to get dogs who are deemed the epitome of their breed. Just as a designer fashion show wouldn't have New Look on its catwalks. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |
