If you live alone (not including kids) you can get a discount for being a single adult household. They might want to install a meter though, so you need to weigh it up. My mate was better off with a meter, her and 2 teenage kids....... |

"what is a water bill?
live in Scotland, don't get them
used to get prescription bills long long time ago, not now"
You water bills are included in your council tax bill
No hospital car parking fees either..... Massive blessing in tough times ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

That's clean water and sewerage charge I take it?
Ask them why they can't fit a meter by your internal stop valve? |

The rule of thumb used to be you'd be better off with a meter if there are fewer people than bedrooms in your household. Don't know if that's still the case. No idea what my water bill is, it doesn't come out of my account but we don't really use that much. |

The Goverment have stepped in and kindly contributed £50 towards the bill.. so it would have been £527.10 |

No fault definitely.
I do use a lot of water but they're over charging a lot because before i had a metre my bill was more than half of what i pay now.
When you get your water capped it's supposed to be based on the average amount of all the bills in your area, so i don't get how my bills can more than double if water is cheaper elsewhere. My ex his bill went up and he's not on a metre so pays rates but it didn't go up to how much i'm paying. |

Looking back to when the water companies were sold off, the reason given was that by breaking up the water company into different individual companies who will all be competing for your business, this will drive down costs. Unfortunately the opposite happened and the shares changed hands many times until they all ended up being controlled by foreign financial institutions.my water company is United utilities always has been always will be. I cannot imagine a water company in Scotland, Wales or even Surrey building value pipeline to pump water from their reservoirs to the northwest. |

Yes it really does depend on where you live and how good the infeerstructure is with the water ways..... And yes the Devon dump in the sea will be a big part of the bill....over the last 10-15 the company will have had to spends millions on reworking all its sewage inferstructure so not to pollute the beaches.... Look at 7 Trent which is landlocked and could not dump to ocean its structure had to be in place very early on and so bills are very low..... Not much can be done other than meter.... So you need to find out why they can't fit. |

If you are a single adult household you can get a single person discount as you can with your council tax. They will assess your property though as they say a water meter will reduce your bill more. In Scotland your water bill is in your council tax bill so you will get the single discount automatically. I am not sure if it is different for all water companies, but it costs nothing to check |

I work for one of the biggest water companies!!! From next year businesses will be able to decide who they're billed by, by 2019 everyone will be. It's no different to the national grid and electric. Obviously Thames Water aren't going to run a pipe to UU customers You'll still be provided by the same company but all of your dealings and billing will be through whoever you choose. |

"Just a thought
Should any one suffer from IBS or similar conditions you can also get an allowance towards water rates or water charged by meter "
Just Google'd it if anyone is interested.
"If you have a water meter and someone in your household receives certain benefits, it may be possible to get the amount you pay capped. You also need to have either have three or more children under 19 in full-time education, or someone in your household to have a medical condition that means they use extra water.
If you're accepted, your costs will be limited to the average household bill for your water company, however much water you use. Average savings can be around £250/year. To sign up, contact your supplier for an application form or find out more on Ofwat's WaterSure page.
Also check if you're eligible for help paying for water arrears in the Grant Grabbing guide. "

I'm on a meter and pay almost twice what you pay, just me and my daughter. If you use a lot of water you'll almost certainly be worse off with a meter. |

We didn't have the choice of whether to be on a meter or not. Seemingly building regulations state that all new builds must be on a meter.
There are 6 of us in the house and we pay £35 a month for water. We have a double width whirlpool bath and 1 child who will waste about 3 basins of water doing some dishes
Ours is capped though due to medical needs.

Just under £40 a month , so seems pretty reasonable compared to others. Still higher than last year though !
Most bill over 8/10 months but you can spread it over 12, by asking. I've never understood why they do it over less, like council tax! I prefer mine spread equally over the whole year.
