So as I was watching GMBTV around 6.45 this morning. A news reel scrolled past that said 250,000 syrian childern without food or water.

Made me think there is probably over 1,000,000 UK childern who are struggling for food yet this is not a war torn country.

Has this country really slippes that far down the gutter that there are more childern here in poverty than a war torn country.

Depends on the context how big is syria population wise? It may be actually proportional? I have no idea though x

1 million children in the UK struggling for food? I doubt that very much.

There will be a million children in the UK in poverty, but our definitions of poverty are relative. They have food and water. It's still shit, but it's really, really not comparable to Syria.

Struggling to decide between a macdonald or a KFC while munching a pizza perhaps

I think there is poverty and then sheer desperation poverty.

Having no food or aid and not knowing what the future holds in the form of country to reside in, death around every corner, forming a q for water or fighting through hundreds to get a handout of rice or similar

Yes, some people in this country are very poor and I wish them better times, but I don't think it is the same

Why? There are facilities in place to help people on the poverty line.

64,988,695 is the estimated current population.

So 1 million would be around 6% of the population. I dont know how you break that down to a ratio of adults to children.

I suspect though a lot more children are neglected and underfed than people realise but i doubt that high...

That would be malnourished as opposed to starving though.

I've looked it up. It's 2.3m children at the last official statistics. Poverty is defined as living in a household with income below 60% of the UK's average. In 2013/14 that equated to a poverty line of £272 per week.

To compare that to Syria is woeful.

In answer to the question of your thread, no.

Poverty in this country is defined officially as being below 60% of the median household income. I don't think that this takes into account benefits received or varying costs of living in different parts of the country though.

There's obviously a difference between being in relative poverty (poorer than average) and absolute poverty (lacking basic amenities)

Two definitions of poverty. Relative poverty and absolute poverty. Relative poverty is not being able to afford the latest PS4 game. Absolute poverty is not having a roof over your head.

I doubt there's any kids here without access to water.

But yeah we've always had a lot of poverty in this country, kids with no access to a lot of things other people take for granted that aren't considered necessities but do mean they end up held back and won't thrive. This can include food but a good amount of families in poverty it's parents tend to go without food rather than let their kids suffer, i've gone without myself for this very reason.

Poverty often means very different things though.

For instance in the UK, children in poverty still almost always have access to clean water that won't kill them. They will almost always have access to some form of shelter. They will almost always be able to access education when they are old enough - and they will be fed and watered at school at least.

The children in Syria - they have nothing. They don't have clean water - every drink they take might kill them. They don't have access to shelter - the blazing sun might kill them. They don't have access to education. They might have to queue for eight hours or more at the food places, only to be turned away because there isn't enough to go round. And they don't have to grow up knowing that they might be going through all this to just be persecuted when they're older for their belief, their sexuality. Girl's know they're likely to be forced into marriages and raped for the rest of their life and similar.

Poverty is awful. Child poverty is worse. But lets not confuse the situation of the UK with those who are trying to escape persecution and war.
