I've been faced with this dilemma on numerous occasions. I'm treating a very sexy woman for a bad back and there clearly is chemistry, and some light flirting by her initiative. I know it's ethically questionable, to get involved, and I've never done so. But it's always been very tempting. Has anyone here had the same dilemma? And did you resist or take the plunge?

If you are providing any kind of legitimate treatment it's not ethically questionable, it's ethically wrong.

but then, if you were offering any kind of legitimate treatment, you would know this.

As long as you never take it further than wondering what if that's the safest option. Not worth the risk to your job or reputation no matter how hot she is.

I do district nursing and there is no way I'd ever have a sexual relationship with anybody who I go into, or any of their family members, and I have had it offered, the son of a woman I go into daily has asked me out for a drink a few times but I always say no, even thought we get on and I really like him

I've worked way to hard to get where I am today to throw it away for a shag

No one would sack him in that case but word of mouth matters a lot. If it got out that he slept with a client he could be seen as a predator.

No. Don't do it.

I remember when a tradesman hit on me in my home. My personal space. My castle. He was in my hallway, and I couldn't ask him to leave because he had to finish the job. I ended up asking a friend to come round because at that point I felt vulnerable. Almost ten years later I still don't like having tradesmen in my home without a friend there.

Now imagine how someone like me would feel if they were in a professional situation. That would make me worried to go back for more treatment. Not just to you, but to anyone.

One of my friends is a physio colleague with a thriving private practice and he's told me "you won't believe what sometimes happens in the office", with a naughty grin (works with many athletes). I've told him he's playing with fire and will get burned. Only a matter of time.

I hate reading things like these. It makes me feel uncomfortable when I have to go to the doctor or xray and it's a man. I know it happens that people have sexual thoughts at inappropriate times but I don't like hearing about it. Although a doctor I was seeing said when he's at work he's in professional mode and concentrating on the patient.

I take it you're a physio? And they're the profession who is most likely to be struck off the HCPC register due to inappropriate contact with a patient. If you want to keep your job, don't do it.

I asked a surgeon I was sleeping with about it and he said a similar thing - even if it was someone he would be attracted to in another scenario, he couldn't think about patients that way because he wouldn't be able to cut into their muscles and bones if he didn't think about them purely in professional mode Which was sort of reassuring, in a way...

I've asked my osteopath before about being 'hit on' and he replied he doesn't see women patients that way, it's a body that he's treating & nothing more.

Which is reassuring considering your laying there in underwear completely exposed

Absolutely, it's difficult to understand why people can be so precious about stripping down in front of me in the job I do as I see it so often, I often have to remind myself that this may be the first time they've removed their underwear in front of a stranger, especially in such an ethnically diverse area as Birmingham is.

You should chat and confirm the feeling is mutual and if you have this chat in an environment unconnected with work I.e meal or phone, then you are not compromising ethics. Suggestively massaging without 100% consent is dodgy though so clear the air.

Perhaps I used incorrect wording. Dilemma would imply indecision on how to proceed, which is not the case. It's never happened and its something I would not do. I've been asked to go to social venues and out for drinks by patients that clearly had an interest for more than just chatting. I always declined precisely for the reasons that have been correctly pointed out in the thread. However, I'd be lying if with a couple of them that were very attractive, temptation didn't briefly enter my mind. We're all human in the end, even if we are professionals. What really matters in the end is the choice we make.

I appreciate the pull of temptation, but given how hard it is to qualify and practice in a position of trust (as a doctor, lawyer, teacher), temptation can never get the better of you.

Yeah someone like a doctor or in any sort of position of trust shouldn't mess with patients. However if you worked in a shop or a gym for example then there's nothing stopping you from trying it on with a customer.

What I'd like to know is how are you sure that the person is actually attracted or flirting with you and not just being polite?

I think there's a level of flirting that its difficult to mistake. However my friendliness has often been misinterpreted as sexual interest when it really isn't so I tend to go the other way nowadays.

I get attention but worked too hard to throw it all away for a shag...

I can clearly discern when a woman is interested, and this is the case. The flirtation has always been initiated by her. I haven't given her much banter for her to build on. In any case, I'll discharge her soon, and no more temptation

"I've asked my osteopath before about being 'hit on' and he replied he doesn't see women patients that way, it's a body that he's treating & nothing more.

Which is reassuring considering your laying there in underwear completely exposed "

I don't think I could trust myself if it was me in that position

People have been struck off even after 6 months of no treatment and starting relationship with patient which ended badly....not even worth the risk.
