Who suffers with it?
I check I've locked the front door at least 3 times before driving away, one time I even turned back once I got to the top of the road to check, already knowing it was locked ![](/icons/s/redface.gif) |

I suspect this is true. Especially those who say 'Oh I'm a little OCD about xxxxx"
Anyone who thinks it's just about cleaning is sadly mistaken. |

Luckily I am the opposite: I live in a happy state of vaguely controlled chaos.
I have a freind who drives me mad because she is a compulsive list-maker.
She has lists of lists. And a master list of the list of lists. And another list of the amendments to the master list. And is completely unable to do anything unless it is on one of her lists.
I stopped fucking her because I couldn't cope with having to make sure we were following the bloody list.

There are things I do like all clothes have to be on the hanger the same way facing the same direction, checking doors even tho I know it's closed and locked, but I often wonder if it's just me having routines for things or is it ocd. |

I used to be very particular rather than obsessive. Everything had it's place or had to be perfect. Since becoming a single parent I'm a lot more chilled. People come to see me not my house - it's clean & tidy as much as it can be or needs to be!!
Things (books, cd's, dvd's) still have to be in alphabetical order though. Cutlery handle down in the dishwasher & my tins a certain way in the cupboard |

If you have no intrusive thoughts I would guess that you just like things done in a certain way and are conscientious and careful ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

I often get told off at the club I attend, I like to arrange the coasters so they are all straight and correctly patterned, people move them when I move from the bar, when I get back they look at me as if to say 'wasn't me'
bloody buggers they are!

I have to drink 8, or a multiple of sips of water before going to sleep (inexplicable), and smoke 2 cigarettes.
I once got the idea in my mind that my electric heater was going to spontaneously erupt into flames one day after I'd left for work, so now I have to unplug it every time before I leave.
My cat Echo gets his evening meal when I tuck into my dinner. It started off as a sort of cute thing for a laugh but now it's just, 'the way it's supposed to be'. It's become so normal that Echo knows that when I'm cooking, it's nearly his dinner time, and sits there watching me.
I'm sure there are more, but yeah, I have mild OCD. Interestingly, my father had OCD when he was young. Wonder if it's hereditary. |

Someone very close to me has extreme OCD. I get annoyed when a lot of people say they have it because they like their towels lined up or wash their hands more than most. That is nothing compared to what my family member and those close to him go through. His hands are always bleeding from having been scrubbed constantly. Can't have visitors to the house for fear of them bringing the germs in. Can't even put his finger in his mouth without worrying about there being germs from his saliva that will multiply and then poison him. Can't share keyboards, seats etc in work (yes, he still manages to work and is very good at it as he is so obsessive about details). Can't use public loos, freaks about eating out, can't shake hands to greet people, can't put on or take off own shoes if they need to be touched, only recently managed to be able to put on own socks. Fucking nightmare to live in |

Ooh, forgot inability to lock doors (someone else has to do it or he'd be up all night checking and never leave the house), and contact checking of gas and electrical appliances in case they burn house down. Sure there are a million more I have forgotten ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

Unfortunately, it does happen with depression. A close friend of mine suffers with it and because it isn't a physical issue, they have been subject to very snide comments like "oh get over yourself" or "just snap out of it." It can be very hurtful and doesn't help them with their coping mechanisms or recovery from a low period. |

As already mentioned OCD isn't just having to do things a certain amount of times or cleaning just because you've got in the habit. People with true OCD have a mental health concern and they are plagued by horrible and scary thoughts if they don't do things a certain way.
Like depression, it is sometimes used as an off the cuff remark without it actually being an actual problem..How many of us say 'oh I'm a bit depressed' but just mean we feel a bit down and are not clinically depressed!
I feel for people who suffer any mental health condition ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

Yes I suffer from OCD, I have to push hard to fight it down from time to time, and still check my door excessively whenever I leave the house, part of my mind tells me I didn't REALLY check if it was locked, or I just imagined I locked it, so it's hard for me to be satisfied before I leave, I've even come back after making it to the end of the street just to make sure I definitely locked the door.
So yes, as you say, many people claim OCD willy nilly, not realising what a distressing problem it can be. |

"It's toilet door handles that's a worry. Public door handles are a nightmare. I can see the germs crawling all over them. "
All toilet door handles will have germs, infact any surface that's touched regular by different people will carry germs
But as an adult surely you know germs are part of every day life and our bodies can cope with them?
What I don't get is how can somebody who can't even touch a toilet door without worrying about germs meets a stranger for sex and fiddle about in their nether regions? Do you not worry about how close to the toilet seat its been? ![](/icons/s/2/eh.gif) |

What I don't get is why every single public loo seems to have a push door to get in and a pull door to get out, forcing you to touch it just after you have washed your hands. Surely it's more hygienic to have it the other way? |
