International Women's Day today

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Progress has slowed in many places across the world.

I've never felt like my expectations were different because I was female or my parents ambitions for me.

I think we are lucky in the UK. In other countries, it's a very different story.

Is it a much fairer society between the sexes nowadays?

Today (8 March) is International Women's Day 2016. It’s a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

This year, International Women’s Day also marks a call to action for leaders to accelerate gender parity (equality in regards to position or pay) where it has not yet been achieved.

For instance, a recent analysis found that women in the UK earn an average of 24% less than men in equivalent jobs over their working life.

You can read more about these findings here: http://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/mar/07/gender-pay-gap-uk-women-earn-300000-less-men-lifetime

I'd like to think that in regards to opportunity we live in a fairer society.

However, in issues of representation we have quite a long way to go. I'm currently working a short article about the phenomenon of "replaceable" women in films. How a woman may be desirable in one film but then written out/ had her entire personality changed in the sequel.

Then again issues of representation need to be worked out through all minorities.

It's now predicted that we won't achieve gender parity until 2133.

85% of women up to the age of 24 have been or regularly get touched without their consent in public places.

Just look on here the amount of people who think we're not relationship material just because we like sex.

No we aren't equal at all but many people treat us like we are.

Well, women have had a 12% shorter working life, those 5 years have been at the end when you'd expect higher earnings. So that makes up the majority of the difference. Then I wonder if they have assumed say 1975-2015, if so that will not be representative of today's earnings, many women in 1975 didn't work at all. Then you have the career breaks for bringing up families. That I can see is an ongoing problem but not helped by family law that excludes fathers.

Evidence is that women are actually earning broadly similar salaries today.

Ok...

Aside from the fact that women also *choose* to take time off from work to give birth & raise kids and then find it difficult to rejoin the labour market...

I think you're conflating two issues tbh.

Today is International Women's Day, which is the point... you need a space to talk about family law, which is cool.

Go start a thread?

but the two issues are the same. Equality in work and in the family home requires women to let go of the kids. Something that they seem to think is not in their interests... not least because they get off a sinking ship first and they get a lot of kudos from the phrase women and children. If we have equality in women's roles it will go a long way towards equality for women.

By definition, you cannot have equality for women and not for men.

Real equality would be the fact that we weren't automatically banging on about children on a thread about women. Because women would be able to be classed as important, useful and productive members of society without having to have children to be considered so.

And Vice Versa ? Rape is just one of those subjects which to me has no comedy value. There have been some horrendous cases worldwide in the news in recent years.

Jyoti Singh who was raped in that horrific attack in Delhi in 2012 was apparently to blame - according to one of the men who attacked her , because she went out at night.

The poison has spread to Europe...along with hundreds of thousands of phoney male 'asylum seekers'. Today's example of their rapefest in Sweden reads as follows:

"Police in Östersund made the unusual move to ask women not to go out unaccompanied after dark, after reports of six brutal attacks by 'men of foreign appearance' in just over two weeks.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, police said they 'have never seen anything like it in Östersund', a small town in the north of Sweden with a population of just 45,000."

No it probably won't ever be. But the days of men "all lined up on front line in battle" are pretty much done too. There are female soldiers who have been fighting for the right to fight in the same roles as men for years.

I love how all the stuff on here is about women getting off sinking ships or fighting on the front line. It's not 1912 and life is not the titanic.

There is still a long way to go before we have full equality.

I for one will be happy when that day arrives.I work with organisations and unions to improve the gender gap.

Woman have made a massive contribution to our world and it should be recognized.

Which means that women are the ones paying the price though they are not the perpetrators. Women cannot just carry on with their lives but the perpetrators are part of the group who can carry on as they feel like.

Yes, this.

I am so fed up with men who assume that when asking for 'women's rights' this is somehow related by default to children.

Personally I'm more concerned with things like similar educational and employment opportunities, and then equal pay while I'm there (did you know that one of the unions that many higher education professionals are members of did a survey recently - women are earning around 20% less than their male counterparts? Even when comparing like for like, experience for experience, and time served for time served?)

When Jyoti Singh was raped, her insides were so brutally damaged that the surgeons didn't know which parts of her internal organs to sew together with other parts of her internal organs? That they used her intestines like rope during the attack? That her surgeons told her parents that they didn't know how she could possibly still be alive after the attack?

And did you know at the time, some British men quite happily said 'she deserved it, she should have obeyed the rules of her country'.

We still have a lot of work to do.

"There is a ring of truth in what he is saying though, the germans welcomed them with open arms baring gifts and some of the men went on tou sexually assault alot of women

An American woman has told how she was rescued from being sexually assaulted on New Year’s Eve in Cologne by a group of Syrian refugees. The refugees formed a cordon round her and helped her find her boyfriend. We are in danger of tarring a whole race with the same brush. That's just wrong.

"Did you know a manchester man was raped by 2 samalion men about a year ago.it doesnt even make the local papers when a man gets raped

Sad but true

"

To be fair, it generally doesn't make the papers when a woman gets raped either - unless it happened in particularly horrifying circumstances.

And how often do you think it makes the papers when anyone is raped?

If it's being properly investigated then there is anonymity to protect the victim and or witnesses.

Two women every week are murdered by a partner or former partner.

That rarely makes the papers either.
