Even as a relatively sane, cogent and rational human being, I still have the irresistible urge to salute a small black and white bird when I see one. I will inexplicably also give him rank in the French Army: "Good Morning, Mon Capitaine".

No matter that I have tried to shake off this childhood superstition, it remains as automatic as ever - much to the amusement of B, friends and colleagues

Do you lot have any silly superstitions?

Like you say you are rational so it will be habit rather than superstition

I always knock on wood when I think I've jinxed myself. I always did it for 15 years when I used to play basketball in a league and it just stuck. Athletes are a really superstitious lot! Marc just rolls his eyes at me.

I never put new shoes on the table and always salute magpies.

I also do the "touch wood" thing.

I never give a purse as a gift without putting a silver coin in it.

I think I am just bonkers really not superstitious.

Derren brown did a great thing about superstitious nature.

I may get this wrong but bare with me.

He had 4 people in a room, and it was locked, the only way to get out was to get the numbers on a board to go up to 100, in the room there were things like balls and stuff, and the 4 people were trying to use all if the equipment to make the numbers go up to 100.

Eventualy the numbers reached 100 and the door unlocked, they had been frantic trying everything in the room to get the numbers up, what they didn't know, was that in the room next door, was a man with a button, every time he pressed the button, the number went up, and he pressed the button, everytime a fish, in a little tank swam past a strip of tape on the front of the tank.

So basically, no matter what they did in that room, they couldn't change the speed at which the numbers went up, it was down to a gold fish

A new colleague of mine, recently arrived from India and of Hindu faith saw me saluting a Magpie the other day and thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen.

I did ask him which in particular of his made-up Gods he was laughing to

One of those little ironies that I love:

The Catholic Church considers superstition a sin.
