Why do you drink alcohol?
Jump to: Newest in thread
...or NOT as the case may be.
Just curious to know why people drink (or don't). What do you get out of it? What's the reason (if any)? If you've quit or cut down then why?
I pretty much don't drink anymore. The odd pint every blue moon. I can't say I ever particularly enjoyed it. The hangovers just killed me and they seemed to get worse as I got older. I really don't think I have the constitution for alcohol. My body just doesn't take to it. Knocking it on the head was one of the best things I ever did. |

I function fairly well with a hangover, but I don't drink anymore. Nothing about it appeals to me. I don't really enjoy the taste, I don't like the way being d*unk makes me feel, and I hate the way my stomach feels the next day.
Saying that, I may have one glass of wine with a meal if the occasion calls for it |

I don't drink generally, as in I will have the odd one at Christmas and a virtual one on here but I have no real reasons for why I don't drink, it's just something I don't think about doing, we went to a club for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I thought I would need one then for my nerves but when I was in there it was just not something I thought about doing, so stayed stone cold sober, I must admit though when we are on a night out me cmy feels odd that he has a drink and I don't, having said that he likes the fact that I am not hungover the next day when he has hangover horn |

Don't drink to excess as it makes me very sick - cannot be bothered wasting a day throwing up and hungover

Also for the same reasons as you though op.
Makes me feel d*unk..never good. I've never met anyone who was improved by alcohol. It makes me want to go to sleep after a couple of drinks. It makes me need to piss every ten mins. It impairs my judgement. I stink of booze and the smell is horrid. It makes me feel shit the next day and all that costs me money to achieve...it's definitely a stupid drug but legal so therefore "ok" in alot of people's eyes. |

All very good points. I think I just reached a point where I realised there wasn't really any positives from me drinking anymore. There was no good coming from it. |

I drink cider because I really like the taste. Getting a bit of a buzz sometimes is nice, too.
I don't really get d*unk too often, though. I can count the times on one hand.

in my youth I was what you might call a 'beer monster'! I enjoyed a drink and I worked with others that enjoyed a drink too..my problem was that hangovers didn't affect me so I just carried on regardless...
nowadays I rarely drink....in fact I've not had a proper drink since new years eve and for the first time ever, I can happily say I don't miss it |

We'll both go weeks/ months without having a drink.
Then, seeing the effects alcohol can have on a person and the family, tends to put you off. |

I drink with the sole purpose of getting d*unk, I don't particularly like the taste so only drink when I am going out with mates for a night out, I haven't had a drink since Christmas eve, but I am out for a 40th in a week or so and that will involve drinking so I will be getting d*unk, and then might not drink again for another 3 months |

I drink to socialise mostly and to have a good time in general!
I've never really had a problem with it myself but I've known plenty of people who do...
People who take anything to the excesses should really avoid doing anything that's got a chance to be habitual.
On that note I never drink to unwind from life |

Drink alcohol on weekend because I like the taste of beer but in moderation because I dislike being d*unk.
I don't drink alcohol during the week for health reasons (I'm trying to get in shape for summer).
Aside from booze I have a soft spot for Pepsi and Monster Energy but again, weekend mainly. |

That's a good point. I don't think you should ever use alcohol as an escape from real life. |

I enjoy some alcoholic drinks, an ice cold glass of German white wine, a glass of champagne, a dry martini with lemonade, a bottle of lager all go down very well. I also like a glass of Bailey's or Tia Maria. I rarely drink red wine it makes me feel depressed and the wine often served in pubs makes me feel ill.
Is it likely that alcohol will become unacceptable in the future in the same way that smoking is now do you think? |

Drinking doesn't have a negative effect on those sat around you or in the same room so probably not I would hazard to say. It only directly affects the user during its consumption.
having said that..the person who has consumed the alcohol can then go on to have negative effects on others around them.
Fights/violent behaviour that it can bring on in some (go down the hospital or police station on a weekend in town and you'll see the examples)
Drink driving etc...
Even the d*unks being loud after chucking out time can simply piss off the neighbourhood from time to time so I don't know to be honest if it will become socially Un acceptable...There are arguments both for and against. |

I have direct experience of how an alcoholic can affect a family but I don't object to people having a glass of wine with their dinner or a beer on a summer evening. I don't think the majority should have to stop doing something because some people take it too far. Just as I don't advocate banning pies even though we're told there's an obesity epidemic. |

I have a couple of glasses of wine on a Friday after work. It's my favourite two hours of the week but more for the company than the wine.
I squirt some Baileys in my coffee now and again but other than that I don't drink at home.
I binge drink on work nights mostly then take three days to recover so I don't make a habit of that. |

I don't blame alcohol or drugs for it, and I certainly wouldn't want to see something banned outright because of the illnesses and deaths the substance may contribute to or cause. That's just stupid.
With that logic, we might as well ban flying or getting old.
I've seen a family member die due to their recreational choices. It didn't make me like alcohol any less.

I didn't say ban it...All drugs need regulating not outlawing..that will just put it on the black market.
It should be legal and controlled because as with any drug it has the ability to destroy or take life. Many are able to drink sensibly..lots can't.

Used to drink a lot, probably every evening. Was a way of socialising in countries where alcohol was frowned upon, but a blind eye was turned as $ spoke louder.
The last 3 years I have the odd drink maybe once a month. Can't deal with hangovers and fur mouth anymore as it takes ages to go away. And am ok with making sure everyone gets home safe, which is my high which I don't need from alcohol. |

I agree
There are more violent atacks carried out by people under the influence of alcohol than any drug, yet it's perfectly legal to drink yourself into a super to the point you can't even remember what you did last night, when I worked in A&E every weekend we would have beat up piss heads clogging the waiting room up, some still cuffed to police officers, so wasting the time of the police and hospitals
I've never head of anybody smoking a joint and going home to beat their so called lived ones up
I'm not defending drugs, I don't agree with them either, I just don't get how alcohol is legal and unmonitored |

"
I don't want it banned, I don't tell other people not to drink.
But seeing the effects alcohol can have, its put ME off.
Having a different view, isn't being sanctimonious. |

I rarely drink now - have no issue with anyone else drinking.
I can't hack the hangover and often have to be ready to drive in the night.

I don't drink and I don't have an issue with alcohol, but I do have an issue with some attitudes towards alcohol.
It's a drug yet not many people seem to see it as that, because it's legal.
I was out at 2am on a Saturday night a little while ago and I had to dodge puddles of puke and listen to people vomiting. D*unk people are generally rude, not necessarily on purpose but because they're under the influence of a drug that affects their behaviour.
You probably wouldn't take any other drug in the same quantities (or whatever the rough equivalent of intoxication is for said drug) as alcohol.
Alcohol isn't an issue, binge drinking is.
And whilst on the topic of alcohol... National drink wine day or whatever it was last week when Facebook was full of drinkers who like having another excuse to drink... Is there a national inject heroin day? |

I drink to get d*unk, be social and it's the way I deal with stress.
If I've had a shit day, you can guarantee I'll be texting around trying to get someone to come out for a few.
I lose my phone about once a month on pissed up nights out. I don't drink everyday and I don't like to drink in the house - but when I go out I tend to drink to excess.

For different reasons. Sometimes I join my my daughter in a glass or two of wine or a cerveza. Sometimes I go out with friends and have a drink and a dance-not so much now I'm not so healthy. Very rarely I feel I need a little lift with alcohol and have a couple of drinks to give me a boost. Occasionally, when I meet someone from here we have a drink in the room. I suppose I'm a rare social drinker. |

I didn't say ban it...All drugs need regulating not outlawing..that will just put it on the black market.
It should be legal and controlled because as with any drug it has the ability to destroy or take life. Many are able to drink sensibly..lots can't.
I've never head of anybody smoking a joint and going home to beat their so called lived ones up
I'm not defending drugs, I don't agree with them either, I just don't get how alcohol is legal and unmonitored "
This is it...why is such a damaging drug just out there freely available in any quantities that people want? I could go to the shop now and be absolutely plastered on litres of spirits by tonight laying in a puddle of my own piss and needing a trip to hospital (many will be doing just that tonight)...nice and legal too.
Off the top of my head i can't think of another drug you can legally buy and get that fucked up off of. |

I like an occasional drink. Even an occasional few from time to time. It's a seasonal thing for me; I like a cold beer, G&T or cocktail in the warmer months for example. I don't enjoy being d*unk though (well I think I do at the time and then wake up the next morning feeling physically awful and mortified at what I may have said); mildly tipsy is good enough for me. |

It is controlled as much as it can be.
The onus of responsibility is with the consumer. Just like gambling, driving, smoking, anything. You choose how you want to be. You determine your own behaviour and attitudes.
The alcohol regulations in this country are sufficient. It would be a crying shame to get to the point where your choices were limited due to over-regulation.
Limiting people's freedoms and rights has a vastly greater negative impact on society than the problems alcohol causes.
I'd be very interested to hear your proposals on how much more regulation and control you'd like to see put on the alcohol industry?

To add to my comments, alcohol makes me either mellow, feel good or gives me a lift. Too much alcohol in one sitting makes me feel ill and the hangover is headache, anxiety and shaking badly. If I didn't feel so bad I would drink more often, because I like the taste of alcohol in my mixers. |

I've live with an alcoholic so I know what it's like... but end of day it's their choice to drink... yes it's a Illness but a illness that is easy prevented by not letting your self get that bad in the 1st place. I had been though a hell of a lot. But I decided enough was enough and made my self stop. Now I can take it or leave it x |

Of course it's their choice to begin with.. But what happens when they're addicted and don't have the mental capacity or the will power that you had to stop?
I'm by no means saying that anything can be done about the amount of alcohol consumed by people, I'm just saying I don't like it.

I've barely d*unk for over 6 months, I got d*unk last weekend for the first time since July.
I stopped fir a couple of weeks and it went on longer than planned. I've always had an interesting relationship with alcohol, I do enjoy a drink but I recognise that I was for a long time a functioning alcoholic and now if I find myeelf drinking for what I feel are the wrong reasons I take a step back and abstain.
Physically and more importantly abstaining has made me feel noticeably better |

I fail to see how it's regulated.
I can go out and be back here with fifty bottles of vodka in no time. Enough to kill several people...it's freely available in any quantity to anyone of legal age.
I believe (I may be wrong...I need to look it up) that in certain European countries or country that they have alcohol 'dispenseries' and each person has a limit..its not prescribed and you can just buy it but there is a cap on what your allowed.
As for my ideas..I'd have to think and talk to people and look at actual facts etc before magically having a solution..
but my opinion remains that it is dangerous and needs regulating somehow
it's interesting to see what people's takes are on it and what others think..It's a very dividing topic it seems

I enjoy a drink. I tend to drink though, only on Fridays. Not necessarily to excess, but, on occasion.
I like the taste, I like the gentle buzz and I like the ritual.
I also find, that getting plastered once in a blue moon seems good for the spirit.
I'm not though an unpleasant d*unk. I tend to play my favourite albums a few times and let my mind wander.
I rarely get d*unk in company, except on special occasions, friends 40th etc and when I do, never to the point of losing control.
Am occasional hangover is OK. A morning enjoying my bed and doing nothing, as long as that's what I planned anyway.
I don't much like the empty calories though. I only drink a couple of pints if out in the pub. |

Not once have I said that your positive feelings about alcohol are wrong, so how come it's alright for you to be a dick to people who have a different opinion to you?
I don't have a problem with drinkers I just think there should be tighter laws, like bar staff shouldn't be allowed to carry on serving people who are obviously already pissed

Yeah, count me in to this club too, because I personally cannot stand the sanctimonious twats that curse the 'evils' of drinking.
Meet my mother and then tell me alcohol isn't evil. Want a torn ligament in your shoulder? Want a slap in the face? Want to be pushed down the stairs? Want to call the police and paramedics because a family member is ripping their hair out and having a mental breakdown from all the years of heavy drinking?
Think about it other ways before you call people sanctimonious twats
I did think about it all ways before I made my original comment, and I stand by it.
I'm sorry you have bad experiences with alcohol, but your bad experiences do not outweigh the good experiences people have with it.
Maybe you're the one not thinking about it other ways.

I enjoy a drink every so often.
I plan to have a nice cold cider later whilst watching the rugby.
I don't drink to excess as I don't like d*unkenness.
Cal has the occasional beer.
I do agree that bars should have the gumption to refuse to serve people who are obviously d*unk. I believe that is may even be illegal to knowingly serve alcohol to someone who is d*unk.
I have to say that I don't see alcohol as a positive thing, having witnessed first hand the impact on both the person with a drink problem and those around them.
Domestic abuse often goes up at Xmas, New Year and when the local footy side loses

When I was younger I was a heavy drinker then as I got older without thinking about it I just naturally calmed down.
Then it was just at parties I'd get steaming then even that stopped to!a couple, now occasionally if I fancy one I will have one and usually is just the one.
Last time I got really d*unk was my 50th and stopped and went into soft drinks.
But rarely now, did have rather a lot of snowballs at Christmas.
First guy I lived with was a violent alcoholic and was dead at 50 I've seen it destroy to many lives

But what about the freedom of the people who have to suffer d*unks
The police that spend hours being called out to d*unken fights, the hospital staff that suffer abuse from d*unks who end up in A&E
Nobody has said ban it, just moderate it better
People who only drink to be social wouldnt mind as it wouldnt affect them
It would only affect excessive drinks, some people need saving from themselves |

I don't drink on a regular basis, only have a couple now and then.
Though I do have a friend that when in his company,as I feel totally safe l let my hair down and have a hell of a good drink Luckily I don't happen to suffer any hangovers.
My soon to be Ex was a alcoholic. After 13 failed detox programs.... Vodka is still and always will be his mistress. I made the decision to walk away after he said he'd never stop drinking. It wasn't a decision I wanted to make,it was one I had to make for the sake of my own sanity. |

Because alcohol is a legal drug we underestimate its potential for destruction. I have seen it cause so much damage but I'm not on an anti alcohol rant. I just think if we could start again and make a new country with good citizens I don't think we would encourage alcohol use. |

I've always wondered...If alcohol had just been discovered..would it be classified as a drug and given a classification like the other drugs? And if so...what would that classification be? Surely class b controlled substance or above? |

Just to put things into perspective, if the properties of alcohol are compared on the drug categorization system that's currently in place in the UK, crack cocaine is category A and alcohol would be A plus if such a category existed. |

Thoroughly enjoy a drink - always have done - I never get angry or daft on it either which is a huge bonus. In simple terms - one of the greatest pleasures in my life personally - and I also enjoy 'the craic' that comes with it in the pub. |

It's realism to recognise that there are a lot of evils associated with drinking.
When it's done in moderation, fine but it's very often abused, with serious consequences. |

"Somebody pass me the wine
I have grapes...you'll need to do the rest yourself
That's why god invented thrush...
Genital fermentation...
It's beautiful.
I'm sure there is a high-end market for that."
I could do the cheese to go with it |

Nothing wrong with a cheeky vodka while you're in Tesco. That's why it's on the shelves! The only booze they don't want you drinkin' while you shop is the classy stuff with the big plastic top on it that they have to take off. That's the stuff they want you to save for the drive home i fuckin love you.. |
