... and now shitting myself.
It's been ten years since my last tattoo, and this one is a fairly major one. It's going to be a rat skeleton along my forearm, and a female preying mantis just below my elbow.
Give me your best pain management techniques for next Wednesday.  |

Forearm doesn't really hurt at all, either side. Gets tender towards the elbow crease but completely bearable.
I take ibuprofen and cocodamol before tattoos. Perhaps you could do the same? |

Ah that's good to know. On my back it was the fat bits at the side that really hurt... although that tattoo only took an hour and I've been booked in for two with this one. |

I found the sides and the lowest part of my back tattoo (the back of the pelvis) most painful. It was definitely more so than my arm. |

Although, if you're extremely sensitive, perhaps you could buy that blue numbing gel. My tattooist used it on me to show me what it's like, completely numbed the area. It was bizarre for me so never asked for it again. It's about £30 for a tiny tiny bottle. |

I find watching helps lessen the pain but I don't really find them that painful. My hand hurt more than my forearm but I find the worst bit is when they're doing a long part of the outline and can't take the needle off the skin.
You can get numbing cream which may help, the chemist will probably have it. |

Try not to tense up would be my advice. I always have my iPad and window shop while I'm being done takes your mind off things. For me tho it's mind over matter the minute I start getting tense and doing the owwwww thing. You know screwing your face up and clenching teeth sort of tense well that me finished!
Kind of me controlling the pain and not the pain controlling me. Sounds kinda weird now I've written it down tho!
Oh and I like the sound of that tattoo. Nice to see someone have something different to the regulation flowers women normally have |

Ibuprofen beforehand also make sure you have eaten. Take a full fat and some water and don't forget to breathe! Afterwards when u take the clingfilm off and wash it I always apply bepanthan and them re wrap with clingfilm and I keep doing that for a few days! It stops the ink from getting on your clothes bed sheets etc and it keeps it moist! Good luck and enjoy x |

Well I'm a history of art student, and I wanted to start a sleeve. And I was like, well I don't want to get something Japanese, or tribal, because they're not my cultures and they're completely meaningless for me. So I thought, what is particularly Northern European? And I went back to 18th Century engravings and things and thought that they would make something really nice. |

I find concentrating on my breathing helps. If it's particularly painful I don't like the tattoo artist to talk to me. |

It's one of the only times in life I reach for old fashioned Lucozade original. I've never taken pain relief for them either; I'm a grit my teeth and get on with it kind of girl. My tattooist is great to natter to though and I also let her choose the music since when I don't know what's playing or about to I concentrate on that rather than the pain. The elbow crease and down by the wrist will probably hurt the most but at least you'll be able to watch it take shape; that's always fascinating. My last one was on my back so I didn't get to watch as much. |

In my experience forearms don't hurt massively so don't expect it to be too bad...
I find if it hurts though take some headphones and close your eyes and turn the volume up and try and disconnect as much as you can from the reality of your situation...sweets too are a good idea...they're distracting to some degree and keep your blood sugars up.

I've found lying down when possible really helps, the more comfortable you are the less it hurts from my experience.
Just eat something before hand and take a sugary drink.
Sounds daft but breathe properly this helps me a lot. |

I've never had pain relief for any of mine. Even the one that took 4 hours.

My last one was an underboob tattoo and i just chatted shit to the tattooist and watched the movie he put on. I don't think you should use pain relief before because it could mask a problem. Have a good breakfast and take a bottle of and a snack keep your sugar level up. |

if the noone can either see or wont mind watching porn or fab cams if the right members could help a lot i heard about a bloke who was in a lot of pain through illness and morphine didnt help enough nso he watched porn 24/7 and due to the endorphines created by his arousel he didnt feel any pain but the second you turned it off he would feel the pain again. I dont know how true this is I was told the story by someone else. good luck |

Eat something before having it done. Take some sweets, drink or lucazade to keep sugar levels up. And June zone out focus on something like a picture on the wall or something. Oh and paracetamol |

I found it was more managing my blood sugar with the adrenaline kicking in!
Decent breakie or lunch before you go. And yep lucozade or sweets to keep you from feeling faint!
Plus if you expect it to be really painful, it won't be as bad on the day.

I always have something I can hold, often a water bottle, my latest on my thigh I had a stress ball that I used to squeeze when it was painful. Works for me as I go quiet when processing pain and the squeezing helped 'focus' the pain |

Thank you Wasp hunter, I'm now inspired to get a tattoo that I have been waiting to get for a long long time, its small, ok its tiny in fact, just two words, but it means so much to me, and I've been working so hard to get to this point in my life ill probably cry like a baby when its done, because its only now that I feel the words are truly fitting of my mental state, so off to the tattoo shop today to pick a design and get a quote, and book in for next week, (he's a very sought after artist)  |

Reading a little bit of this thread late last night and then the fact I've got the second half of my leg piece booked in for tomorrow gave me a dream about a huge praying mantis.
So thanks for that.
Anyway I thought you could only take paracetamol and not ibuprofen for pain relief during tattoos as the ibuprofen thins the blood.
Is that correct or not?
Also does the numbing cream effect wear off after about an hour? My session tomorrow will be 4 and a half hours.
I also want to get an Infinity curve but I haven't found the right place on my body to put it. |

It does thin the blood, but it doesn't really matter when it's a small dose. It's not like you're gonna be haemorrhaging.
Numbing cream does wear off, especially EMLA as it's a low concentration. There are specific tattoo ones that last longer (like the blue gel one I mentioned). |

I've been told previously, however, I'm not permitted to comment on such matters as I don't have any tattoos myself. |

Had a long discussion about this at the tattoo parlour actually - one of my partners is on copious amounts of blood thinners and wants a large tattoo. He didn't think it would damage the sharpness of the end result, but it would take more time and more sessions to get a good result. |

Everyone's pain threshold is different
Mine was ok until I got pregnant...then wimpdom ensued
Currently head frazzled but fear it hasn't got back to 'normal'
Some people zone out and enjoy it....
I'd have a good sleep the night before, couple of painkillers and see how you go
