Followed an Aston Martin Vantage convertible earlier along a lovely piece of country road.
Sun's shining, engine sounded lovely. Older guy driving it - knew I was admiring it I imagine.
Never owned a convertible - always figured our weather was too unpredictable. If I had my ideal and two cars to myself though - I'd love a classic one.
Would you like one? Ever owned one?

If you're feeling really opulent you fit neck blowers to take the chill off
I could never drive mine with my hair down though. I lost all visibility when it whipped about |

I have had three convertibles prior to getting a 4x4. People always used to try and put you off them yet never had any issues with any of them concerning the roof or generally. Used to love the rare occasion we got a hot day! |

Had a new bmw 3 series convertible 15 years ago. Brilliant car. After going through many sports saloons and 4x4's I now have a 2 door coupe. I think the old mid life crisis is edging its way in as eyeing up the bmw 6 series convertible now. |

I love most convertible's...had a few... Mostly old old golf clippers... And a series 1 escort that was amazing.
And a few other newer but not interesting ones. Would love an old b3 alpina one ... Borrowed one for a weekend once and omg I loved it.
Next convertible I have will be either an mx5 or a Alfa spider... Want both for different reasons |

Always buy in winter or just towards the end of summer save yourself a few hundred quid |

We (well T) has one but wasted really, occasionally she get her top off (sorry couldn't resist) but only for short trips to and from work but we're normally in my work van when we go any distance because she's tight with fuel! |

I've been watching the market for ages - it doesn't really work that way as less people sell so it artificially raises the price anyway.
The chancers who put their cars on the market above value around peak times soon find that their cars don't sell and the market gets flooded with better options. |

It's all about personal flavour but if you're looking at buying one there's a couple of categories and directions to go.
Budget: Astra, Megane, 206cc or 306cc.. All of which you can pick up for very little money with high specs, though all are front wheel drive so you won't want to do many track days.
Mid range: stick with German up to 15yrs. Audi, BMW & merc... All round drivers cars with all being rear wheel drive (except Audi fwd or Quattro). Can have plenty of fun on track days and from a style point of view you get some kudos.
High end: buy what you like, if money is no object the sky is the limit, although classics are better investments.
Classic: if your looking at classics then you'll prob know what you want, but if you like the idea of a classic but don't know where to start.. Porsche 914 is a good place to start, prices on the rise and relatively unknown... I'd buy one of these before considering an mx5..
Cars are my thing and I rarely get the opportunity to talk about them in public so sorry, I'm not sorry.... Ha |

Had a few, last one was a Boxster 3:2s. Great car. Very quick and handled like a go kart. Very responsive. Reliable with a good roof mechanism.
Had. Jeep rag top too and a Vitara Soft top. All great fun |

Yeah, I absolutely loved mine. Not really practical for me any longer, but perhaps when I can afford two cars, I'll have a convertible again. |

Owned a few over the years, Triumphs, MGs, an Alfa and a couple of MX5s. All great fun in their own way. Never any issues with security or leaks and great with the roof down of course, even on cold days, just stick a hat on and turn up the heating! |

A Guy brought his import Honda into the Garage next door to our place. I mentioned how cool it was that a crane came out of the boot to lift the hard to out of the way and store it in the boot. The mechanic hit the buttons and lo and behold the crane came out and the roof went away. Really impressive. Then when it was time to put the roof back up, none of us could work out how to do it. It took the mechanic over an hour to work out how it was done. |

Had one, they're okay. Few negative points though. Limited boot space, more road noise when traveling at speed (unless u get a hard top) less mpg as they're heavier, your mates will rip u at every chance, and fewer people will let u out at junctions because people think you're a twat! |

That's a discussion I keep having, as one of my friends doesn't believe in the mid life crisis. I think it's alive and well!

I've had a few but never kept them only bought them because they're was a profit in them. If the sun's shinning I'd rather my bike...
As for mid life crisis I thoroughly recommend them I've had a few |

Got one, albeit a little tiny one, had it for 11 years and wouldn't go back to a hard top unless I had no choice. Who cares what the weather is doing, armed with heated seats I have been know to drive around topless when it has been snowing.

Actually on that note I have had random insults flung at me...presumably because I drive a convertible (never happened before!) so that's a downside for me. |

I found that when I've had flashy cars this happens. Also found that people tend to let shopping trolleys run into them as well. Jealousy is a funny thing. I now drive a mondeo and have found the motoring experience to be far more pleasant. Plus I no longer care of someone smacks it with a trolley in tesco! |

I have had 4 convertibles An Astra then a Nissan and Two Slk ..
Oh this last one is the bees knees nice engine noise lots of extras computer heated seats with airscarf so the hot air runs up the back of seat and out the top so having the roof off winter and summer is possible.
Only last week I went for a run out on motorway with roof down was very exhilarating.
I love it the one thing that makes me really happy these days. |

I have a 1998 mgf it's insure in a classic car policy
£76.00 per year
Road tax is 20.18 per month
Usually scrapes through the mot
Am looking round for a pre 1960 anything cheap so no need to mot or tax
It's worth every penny of what I spend in the car for those few days a year
And the good part is a day out means the kids can't come |

Love Golfs that's on my to look at list but doubt I can stretch to a convertible.

Mine was an N reg and cost me £1100, I know I got a good one BUT I'm yet to have a bad one, I went from a landrover defender to the golf cab and apart from towing there wasn't much that little golf couldn't do, great in snow!! |

A certain Fab user is selling a rather wonderful Alfa Spider in an incredibly rare colour. I would love to buy it from her and use it as a second/summer car. Alas it's just not realistic for me to do so at the minute.
I will have another Spider though, they're amazing. |

"I had a 1970's MG Roadster

I would seriously consider buying a Spitfire (they are fairly affordable) but I think they look horrible with the hood up. |

Go for a GT6 then
My friend has a 1966 one. Racing red with wire wheels.
Lovely little car
It only gets out once a year these days - when he does a return trip to Le Mans in it |

GT6 is one of my favourite classics. Sadly the price for a reasonably decent one (ie, not an absolute shed) has gone up fairly sharply in the last decade. |

I had a SAAB 93 convertible for a while, loved it. Traded it in for a Jag FX saloon but missed not being able to put the roof down so got myself a little Astra convertible now as well to use on those three days in the summer when having the roof down is just what you want. |

A friend had a MK1 mx5 slammed on some pretty sweet alloys, camber and stretched tyres...the full "stance" look.
Harsh as hell to ride in but was bloody good fun.
I wouldn't want a convertible to own though. |
