You know, those programmes that seem to be on constantly.
Are you a fan or do you think they're mundane rubbish?
Do you have a favourite or just watch them all? |

But yes i watch Eastenders, Corrie and just getting into Emmerdale.
Find them a bit far fetched at times, but generally i think they are great. Storylines are not realistic in the sense that SO many dramatic things happen but they raise awareness of issues to the _iewing public and if those plots help one person im sure its worth it |

"always tickles me when people say 'Dont watch them cos they are really shit'
How would you know if you dont watch them? "
Good question, but the same could be said for people who slag off football or rugby for example |

I'm one of those who doesn't watch them, but then go to my nan's and it's always on.....so I inadvertently catch up and know what's happening after 1 or 6 months of not watching. However neighbours I do tend to watch that, it's just easier and the storylines are over after a few weeks. |

My mum and aunt are addicted to the things. They record them if they're not in and watch them later. I suspect they get it from my nan.
I get the impression that they are of a certain time, made popular when women often didn't have other hobbies that took them away from the house in the evenings. (My mum and my aunt, for example, don't really have any hobbies other than watching soaps.)
Nobody I know in my friendship group watches them, as far as I'm aware. Personally I just think they're often not very good or exciting story telling. I just find them really unstimulating.
If I'm going to sit down and watch TV I'd rather watch something that will stimulate me, perhaps teach me something new. I mostly watch documentaries on TV, and sometimes a good cooking program or something. I have a bit of a weakness for fact-based gameshows like Pointless or University Challenge. But mostly I just don't spend much time in front of the TV. I have other hobbies to spend my time doing, so it has to be something pretty interesting to drag me away from them.
I'd be interested in looking at studies showing what kinds of people watch soaps - what their class bracket is, their income levels, their other hobbies. I suspect it is far more diverse than many people think. |

Used to watch Eastenders & Neighbours. Thinking about it now was very much like Wasp mentioned above^^ it was almost like a hobby.
Don't have the spare time to watch them now & its pretty much the same storyline played out over the years. |

I watch Corrie off and on, because my husband does. If he's out, I don't watch it of if there's something else on, we watch that instead. It's just habit really. I watched Neighbours all through school and university, it was part of the daily routine |

Oh god, I remember at university, in one of the rooms that served food, the whole place would go quiet when Neighbours was on |

I got into watching neighbours when in hospital, it was better looking at that then staring at the ceilings (especially Kylie and holly valance). Still watch it now and then just to see what's going on or who's on it.
Watch emmadale as the wife likes it so you kind of get drawn into what's going on. Mind you the way they all swap partners in it, sounds to me it would be a swingers paradise of a village lol.
Watched hollyoaks once only because my son said how sexy some of the women were in it, for once he was right lol |

I know they are shit in the same way as I know McDonald's is shit food without needing to actually eat there. |

Not way watched a soap in years. Occasionally catch a bit of one while channel hopping and that's enough! It's not my idea of entertainment or a fun way to spend my spare time

You see I have had a Mc Donalds and decided it was manky so know from experience they are shit. If I hadn't had one then I wouldn't be able to say one way or another surely? |

It tickles me when people get incandescent with rage when the football comes on during a World Cup or European Championships every 4 bloody years as "it's on all the time" and an episode of one of the soaps has to be postponed.
Like the soaps are on EVERY DAY of every week .. |

A dwindling allocation of real-life doesn't afford me a sufficient resource of real-time to habitually waste it watching other people pretending to be involved in a real-life scenarios .....
I don't care how realistic they can make it look...... |

It depends what you mean by 'shit' I suppose.
I know that McDonalds is nutritionally shit food. I'm ok saying that without eating it - because I can examine that from other sources.
But someone couldn't say that McDonalds tastes shit *to them* without eating it themselves. |

I watch Neighbours, have since I was about 10 years old. It's like my guilty pleasure, though it is essentially shite. You can't really deny it, it is utter drivel! It's now just become some mindless nonsense that I have on while I eat my lunch.
I think the key is not to watch too much of this kind of crap. I'd be concerned about my sanity if I watched too many soaps. |

Corrie & Emmerdale and I dip in and out of EastEnders.
I'd blame the fact that I've always watched Corrie on the fact that my grandma brought my mum up on it so my mum brought me up on it, but that's no excuse. |
