"Our daughter has just walked down the stairs and pretty much said the same thing."
The first episode had that first Thalidomide birth, then we had the one with the Thalidomide baby left by the open window and I couldn't stop sobbing. I know it happened but seeing it, even in a drama, was so heart-wrenching.

i am not a fan but this series with the issue of Thalidomide has been interesting and sad, my mum was advised to take it and said no but my aunt took it and my cousin was mildly affected..
seeing the scene where the baby was left in the sluice to die was a bit of an eye opener.. |

i am not a fan but this series with the issue of Thalidomide has been interesting and sad, my mum was advised to take it and said no but my aunt took it and my cousin was mildly affected..
seeing the scene where the baby was left in the sluice to die was a bit of an eye opener.. "
I had read about babies born with visible disabilities being left to die "naturally" and their parents being told they had been stillborn. I've always vacillated between feeling they were arrogant and uncaring and them being just misguided and haunted by it.
Now Thalidomide is used for leprosy and bone cancer.

This series is "inspired by" the original books but it's better than the usual follow ons.
Thalidomide was a big issue when I was growing up. When my mum was in hospital having one of my brothers she heard a baby crying incessantly and went into the room it was coming from where there was a baby she now knows was affected by thalidomide just left there  . 57 years later she still gets upset about it. |

Thalidomide was a big issue when I was growing up. When my mum was in hospital having one of my brothers she heard a baby crying incessantly and went into the room it was coming from where there was a baby she now knows was affected by thalidomide just left there . 57 years later she still gets upset about it. "
That is so sad.

it's a difficult one given the not knowing what it was and some of the deformities presented but one does wonder how many would now have lived difficult but fulfilling lives.. |

I remember them pulling on my cord pressing my tummy and tugging.. I haemorraged and they had to get the flying squad out from the main hospital.. needed 4 pints blood.
Same thing happened to Mum with me when she had me at home. She nearly died. |

They knocked me out and took me to surgery when pressing on my tummy didn't work.
