I've just heard that Guitarist Gary Moore has died. He passed away in his sleep last night, he was only 59. He'll be sadly missed. RIP

One of my childhood heroes, and, in my opinion, the best guitarist Thin Lizzy ever had (in fact, just one of the best guitarists)...loved his music. Was devestated when I heard the news yesterday afternoon.

R.I.P.

was teh first band i ever saw live as well, my parents took me aged about 4 back in 73 or 74

was also the second band i saw live aged 16 or 17 (thunder and lightning tour)

No need to be embarrassed about it, they were a damn good band

On thing about my profile is that some of the content attracts fellow music lovers and I've had some wonderful chats as a result of this. I was touched at how many have written to say you must be gutted about Gary Moore - and I am. I list him as my favourite blues/rock guitarist. He once formed a band in the early 90s with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker (late of Cream) they called themselves BBM. Short lived but great to listen to. He wrote most of their one and only album. I was in London on my way to one of their concerts and coming in the opposite direction I almost fainted on the spot - Eric Clapton. He saw my look of surprise and smiled. I said to him aren't you heading in the wrong direction? He laughed (not easy for Eric sometimes) and said I think you will have a great night. I was absolutely star struck and thrilled.

I was very critical of Gary Moore the last time I heard him play live at City Hall in Newcastle a couple of years back. It was a self-indulgent concert. Played all of his new stuff and none of the crowd pleasers. There was good natured heckling and leg pulling from the crowd. He then played Parisienne Walkways for 30 minutes! Not one of my facourites. I would have to choose Still in Love with you also Empty Rooms. I feel empty knowing a great Irish musician like another of my heroes - Rory Gallagher has gone to the big gig in the sky in the middle of his story. R.I.P. Gary

What happens to the Les Paul?? I WANT it!!!!

(I mean Peter Green's iconic Les Paul that Gary Moore bought way back when Peter Green was having one of his funny turns, for £110.)

Ah fuck it. It seems Mr Moore flogged it a couple of years ago, for a mere £1.2 million. Basterd, I'd have had that if I'd known..... (and won the Lottery first)

Pete probably bought it back for 1.2 million during one of his not so funny turns....

I reckon Rory Gallagher would have been buried with his Sunburst Strat though....

That has got me thinking...Gary or Rory...two different styles, who was the better of the two..Id say Rory Gallagher by a whisker.

Rory was the better blues player/writer I would say. Brute Force and Ignorance being a fave slow bluesy rock number. Gary for solo rock riffs..... oooooh its too mean of me to be disloyal to either!! This is a Devil Went Down to Georgia moment!!

Two equally talented and extraordinary in different styles i'd say , Gary was possibly the fastest fingered and most accurate solo guitarist ever while Rory with an electric guitar played mostly slide and had more of an accoustic repertoir , Rory's version of Leadbelly's Western Plains was unbelievable. The quote that springs to mind was when during an interview Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like being the greatest guitarist in the world "i dunno" he answered "go and ask Rory Gallagher" .Still , in Gary Moore we've lost a unique and trully great musician also a fantastic human being , sadly missed .

They have a huge fanbase and have produced and sold dozens of albums and still tour to packed sell-out venues. I would say thats pretty consistant and successful enough for those who are fans of their work over the past forty years

On the brink of what though I think success doesnt depend on pop chart exposure does it? They formed a band (that scattered) made and produced albums and singles (more than Zep, actually) are still touring and recording forty years on. What more could they achieve?

Valid point , commercialism doesn't dictate "success" or talent , you only need to browse the top ten to realise the impact of money and marketing , musical expression o integrity is quite different
