We do this. I usually read to Marc on long drives but when we get to a place where he has to focus we turn the radio on but with a low volume.
I don't think it's weird.

When my son first passed his test, I bought him a little car,
And before I handed him the keys I had the radio removed.
He should be concentrating 100% on the driving, not listening to music.
At least till he had enough money to buy his own car!

When I first started driving I couldn't have music on!
Now if I'm getting stressed or concentrating I shout at the kids to be quiet and turn the music down! |

no music normally stays on and most of the time its loud or loudish
only time music is off is when I want to listen to the car and what the car is telling me
the knocks, the bumps and the vibrations that the car is giving off whilst driving
ooh and kids sometimes told me to turn it up, more often than tun it down |

Bugger THAT. Case in point, had Highway to Hell on earlier, on a roundabout, cursing a cut-up merchant..failed to notice my phone had cut in on bluetooth..
