what's the best type of mattress to buy?

I'm looking to replace my old mattress and I'm thinking about getting one of these memory foam mattresses, I'm sure i'll get a good nights sleep on it and my back will benefit, but can anyone recommend them for the old bedroom olympics!!!  |

itreated us to one at xmas , its lovley and comfy i wake up with no aches and pains.....but....i dont find it that brilliant for certain sexual positions as u sink in if ur in a certain position for a long time...x |

We have an extra deep layered mattress - the bottom is an individual pocketed spring mattress and the top is memory foam - and then the very top is a fluffy layer - sheer heaven!
Having played several times on a 'pure' memory foam mattress I can't say that I've ever noticed any sinking feeling - maybe I don;t stay in one position long enough... |

the best thing i did was get one of these matress's with the memory foam...they are fantastic.....
the matress's were fine for that... i just needed a new base lol |

Downside is also that they are incredibly expensive, and an incredibly expensive mistake if you dont like it. Personally i found it far too hard for my taste, much prefer a proper springy mattress but then they do say, lighter, skinny girls are often better on soft beds, build blokes who sleep on their back can usually sleep on anything.  |

We bought a memory foam matress about 2 years ago. It was bloody expensive one and to be honest not worth even half the money. It's like sleeping on concrete, not to mention the chemical smell which came off it for the first month or so. We also think that they get to warm ...  |

The temperature bit is exactly right, and i also agree with concrete, not comfortable at all though ive a work colleague that swears by hers |

Just way too expensive for some of us though, even the latex ones are not much better. I wandered around a few stores and tried out the beds, some were just too hard for me, all way out of my price range  |

I vote memory foam. Typically you have a foam core which is the base of the mattress and a couple of inches of memory foam on top; Hardness/softness depends on the foam core, which come in different grades.
Some come with a "normal" sprung mattress instead of a foam core but I didn't rate them any better. Additionally with an all foam one you don't get noisy springs
Also you should check your bed frame and how good this will be for supporting a new mattress and may affect how good it feels or not.
Regarding price, I bought a new king-size bed, frame and memory foam mattress for a bargain price. The key is to go when they have a slump in sales, which is about this time of year and be prepared to haggle. I got 25% off the discount sale price by offering to pay cash, I also got delivery thrown in for free! You can tell I am from Yorkshire
Of the few people besides myself whom have experienced my bed, they all said they loved it and didn't want to get out of the bed, bloody lay abouts! |

PS: They do out-gas for a little bit for a month or so.
The one I got was a:
"sleepmasters king memory foam mattresses sensaform select"
- google for it and it is the second entry. I paid £150 for it, so *waaay* less than the stupid price they have it listed at the moment!

Unfortunately the average price of £90 for a 3/4 bed is not something i can afford, and having tried out the beds in half a dozen shops, i would rather save an extra £80 and buy a proper bed.
I think either you love memory foam or you dont, simple as that |
