Using mobile phones whilst driving.

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So yet again this morning, nearly get taken out at a roundabout by a driver who's quite clearly on his mobile phone. I mouth to him to put it down and got the finger.

I know it's not rant Thursday but it really bloody annoys me! Get a hands free set, pull over and answer or bloody wait! See I've even resorted to swearing.

There is indeed lol

However, how do you stand on using your mobile when stuck in a traffic jam, especially for texting or dare I say fabbing.

The amount of people I see looking down and obviously texting whilst driving is unbelievable.

While you're ranting about drivers can I put in a vote for range Rover drivers who ALWAYS seem to park in the disabled slots, no doubt because they are driving a tank which doesn't not fit into any other bay and they can afford to pay the fines.......oooh but they make me cross!

Audi drivers, save money on wing mirrors, get close enough to use those on the car in front.

Other mid range saloon cars are available.

No and it's not acceptable to unless the traffic is stationary and your engine is off.

It's not aceptable to be distracted in slow moving traffic. People do this at traffic lights all the time and it means they do not see pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists and are still distracted when the lights change

I smoke out of the window in my flat. I'm on the second floor and if I had a pound for every person talking/texting as they drive past, I'd be sat on a beach in the Bahamas smoking my cig instead.

Fucking annoys me too! Never ceases to amaze me how brainless some people can be. It's been proven many times that being on your mobile while driving can cause accidents and even deaths.

I wish these dumb people who insist on playing about on their mobiles while driving, could feel the pain and devastation they would cause if they ended up killing someone while destracted on their phone. I promise you it would change the way they think. Families torn apart, lives altered forever...just because someone felt the need to answer a text/call whilst driving...ignorant cunts!!

Some of the cyclists in our town deserve to be run over by the same idiots. The amount of times they go through red lights is ridiculous. These tend to be the same guys with those stupid helmet cams thinking they're above the laws that the drivers adhere to. Coincidently I saw one a few weeks ago ride through a traffic light on his mobile and mount the kerb. When did it become legal to ride on the pavement anyway?

Take the details of drivers doing this, where you can and report to the police.

I don't think anyone deserves to be run over but you can certainly be the master of your own destiny

I was turning right in London yesterday at a set of traffic lights. A cyclist coming the other way cycled through the red light and into the path of my car as if he didn't have a care in the world.

I stopped, opened my window and offered him the use of my glasses

This is still illegal, tried arguing with a copper over it. As the joke goes, I fought the law and got 3 points.

That's not the case. They are having a consultation this year, and aiming to double fines and points for HGV. No month bans. No bans at all, unless you're a persistent offender or reach 12 points as per usual.

Never stop until the law gets tough wth em. Ban from driving and when they do get back behind the wheel a ban from using a mobile phone in any vehicle for 12 months. If they persist flaunting the law a flogging in a public place of their choice. Criminals are too highly thought of these days.

dont think so there phone records will show their phone was being used, bet it is funny to watch them drop the phone, even if your in traffic you can still get done, same as drink driving if your even in the car with keys sleeping and parked up engine off your still classed as driving

I've always had cheap bluetooth squawk boxes in both cars, but since smartphones, I never initiate calls whilst driving, it takes too much attention.

Previously, a single button press on the speaker would put my phone in voice command mode and I could voice dial from my address book, with the phone asking me if it's found the right contact and me telling it to search again if it was the wrong one. Now I have to wake the phone up, find the voice recognition app, start it, say a name, and confirm on screen that it's found the right one, so they're absolutely useless for trying to phone whilst driving. I'd be seriously in the market for an older style phone.

Yep I nearly got taken out by bloke in a flat bed truck chatting on his mobile, when he noticed me he pointed to his phone as of to say "can't you see I'm talking?"

Then there was the man behind me in slow moving traffic reading his paper who when he nearly ran into the back of me shouted angrily "what did you stop for?"

I'm not a woman given to anger but people like this need to have a word with themselves.

I do love the way people with brand new cars such as bmw, Audi, vw, mercs and Chelsea tractors tend to talk on their mobile phone even though their precious new cars have Bluetooth as standard. Fucking clueless.

This thread reminds me to put my handsfree back in the car.

And to the poster about the smartphones and voice dialling your phone must be shite every smartphone I know has voice dialling as standard with a touch of a button.

I had a twat try take a photo of me once, I was doing nothing wrong but because he couldn't get in front of me he tried a bullshit story to my company to get me fired. I calmly pointed out what he done and how he was using his phone to take unlawful photographs while driving. Needless to say I still work at my place 2 years later

"

It's Android - they're all the same, and mine doesn't have buttons it has a touch screen, which is the issue.

Phone goes into standby, so you have to swipe screen to wake it up.

I've put the voice recognition app on my home screen, but still have to look at the screen to locate it accurately and activate it.

Then I can say the name, but I have to look at the screen to check that the one at the top, which it will dial if I leave it, is the correct one. If not, I have to select the correct one from the list if it is there, otherwise cancel and start again.

All this I used to be able to do by a single button press on the side of the speaker of my hands free.

So unless you have some magic that can make Android, or IOS, do the same thing from one single button press on the speaker phone.....

If you are in a position to do so, i.e. not driving, and are quick enough, take a picture of them on the phone, including the licence plate and report to the police - the feckers shouldn't be using the phone when driving (without hands free).

Most new cars now also have touch screen everything in them.. should using this be made illegal?

It takes your eyes and concentration off the road..

Or from a different angle... should using these devices be part of the driving test? If you can't drive and use a devise...should you be driving?

Its still illegal, you aren't aware of your surroundings.

Personally, if - as we are told - phone use is just as dangerous as drink driving, then the penalties should reflect that. Not 6 points & £100 fine but loss of licence for one yr minimum and a fine of thousands.

Phone use is endemic, make the penalty for it more fearsome.

You know its not actually illegal to use a phone whilst cycling?

Its crazy, but obviously the lawmakers didn't consider it when forming the current laws. Therefore they aren't breaking the law by doing so, although I've no doubt there are other laws they could potentially be breaking.

wrong any driver with a hgv/psv entitlement who is prosecuted for using a phone whilst driving will be reported to the local transport commissioner and invited for a hearing to " explain" results so far are minimum one month revocation of entitlement to drive hgv/psv so unless you have a very understanding employer your unemployed .you still retain you car driving licence

have you got proof, they know if they visit the person they will deny it, so it would be wasting police time as it would be hard to get a conviction, it would be easier to stand on a corner and watch motorists bound to catch someone
