Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

When they say 'you'll just feel a little scratch' they're right.

Just look away.

you'll barely feel it; hurts less than a tattoo...just make sure you look away..pick something to stare at on the other side of the room in case the sight of the needle/blood makes you feel faint....and dont be embarrassed to ask if you can lie down to have it done...lots of people feel faint..good luck!

I wish I had the foresight of preparing myself for my first blood test. Never again. I'd rather die of blood poisoning than go through that ordeal again

They lay you down and strap your arms to the sides. Then with a scalpel, they cut away and expose about two centimetres of the artery. One the blood starts to gush, they place a bucket underneath

It is all over in about 15 minutes. The pain is gone with a fortnight but the scars never heal

I've had a few where they couldn't find the vein. They stabbed away, trying to get blood that wasn't there, pushing the needle in and out. I almost passed out once, another time she was going to go into my foot because my arms and hands weren't giving up the blood. I had to point out where they usually get some from.

I usually feel next to nothing and have thought they were still about to do it, when it was done. Some tests need next to no volume of blood and so take a couple of seconds.

If not fully confident, sit or lie down and look away, as others say. Tell the person only to do it when you're ready. As you've never given any, your veins should be readily and easily accessible. Just relax and think of something you find soothing and positive.

Most needles these days are very thin and unobtrusive. If they're taking a vile it'll probably be a small butterfly style needle drawn from your arm. If it's a prick style ,instantaneous blot test.. A small finger prick.

You really have nothing to be apprehensive about.

Due to my bone marrow producing too many red blood cells, I have to have a venesection, I call it a vampire session, occasionally. I've had a 5 minute one, but once it took about 25 mins.

How do you know you don't like needles if you've not had a blood test?

Are you thinking about having injections in the past? In that case they are forcing fluid into your body which can be uncomfortable or sting.

Having a blood test is not like that. It's not painful.

It really is just a small scratch. Tell them you don't like needles and are nervous and make sure you find something to look on the other side of you. Focus on that, breathe and don't worry.

It takes seconds.

This was true getting me niple pierced:

They clamp it flat (here pain is like a 9)

Then they put a needle in it (12)

Then they pull it back with a bar (I'd say in my mind this felt like a knife cutting the back of my neck-never tried but pretty sure it will feel like that)

Then a month of pain and ooze-why have I done this to myself! !!!

One day the surprise that a shirt rubbing against it gives me an hard on- ahhhhhhhh that's why!

Yes! It does. Tell them you're anxious and could you have someone very experienced. They missed the vein in one of my donations: this thing is a massive tube, they poked about, i went a bit pale and borderline vom and put a stop to it! The pump is only given to adolescents or elderly with dexterity issues or lack of maturity to self administer.

They're wildly expensive and unless a patient meets those criteria.. They don't quality for NHS founded.

Continuous glucose metres are niche and not covered by the NHS. Too expensive for most to self-fund.

It's rare. Thousands of blood tests are done every day and the vast majority take seconds and go without a hitch.

If people are very petite, old, have small or elusive veins or certain health problems, or have blood taken regularly, it can be more difficult.

You'll be fine.

You're ok if you get an experienced phlebotomist.

Unfortunately there are some who are not.

Like the one who spent 10 minutes digging around in one arm trying to find the vein. Gave up and started on the other arm.

I had to help out in the end.

Best of luck.

I ALWAYS practise safe sex, yes I do donate, they ask generally If you had unprotected sex with guys or girls not "regular"- but they do full screening of all the bloods and should they find you to have anything, they destroy the blood and send you a letter advising you to visit gp and time until you can donate again if ever. 6 months at least for a tattoo or piercing or injectable drugs

That's what I have been told it hurt when they can't find the vein and there poking about

Yes! It does. Tell them you're anxious and could you have someone very experienced. They missed the vein in one of my donations: this thing is a massive tube, they poked about, i went a bit pale and borderline vom and put a stop to it! Only one pack per person and I couldn't donate that time. My arm hurt for a week and I was gutted to not do my bit!

That's why I am not wanting to get it done for if they do miss the vein "

What are they checking for? I'm assuming you haven't had a once over at the GUM clinc yet?

He's talking about donating blood. It's totally different. Donating blood uses a much larger needle.

Really, there is nothing to be scared of.

Stubbing your toe is more painful than most blood tests.

We are talking different things: a blood test needle these days is nearly capillary while a blood donation needle is just smaller than the ink tube on a biro

You shouldn't donate if within the last 12 months you have had sex (with or without a condom) with:

- a commercial sex worker

- someone who has injected drugs

- someone who has haemophilia (a condition that stops your blood from clotting normally) or another type of blood disorder that required clotting factor treatment

- someone who has been sexually active in parts of the world where HIV and AIDS are common – such as sub-Saharan Africa

- a man who has had oral or anal sex with another man (if you are female)

- a man (if you are male)

They missed the vein in one of my donations: this thing is a massive tube, they poked about, i went a bit pale and borderline vom and put a stop to it! Only one pack per person and I couldn't donate that time. My arm hurt for a week and I was gutted to not do my bit!

That's why I am not wanting to get it done for if they do miss the vein

What are they checking for? I'm assuming you haven't had a once over at the GUM clinc yet?

They need to take my bloods before they can put me on a tablet that I need to be taking and then when I am on the tablet I will need my bloods doing every month

You don't have to tell anyone why you are having a book teat.. That makes no difference to the test

Hmmm, i was on regular tests for warfarin, if that's the tablet then there is an alternative where you don't need the regular tests."

I ain't saying what tablet I am going on cos that's for me to know

Do you still give blood now you swing?

I ALWAYS practise safe sex, yes I do donate, they ask generally If you had unprotected sex with guys or girls not "regular"- but they do full screening of all the bloods and should they find you to have anything, they destroy the blood and send you a letter advising you to visit gp and time until you can donate again if ever. 6 months at least for a tattoo or piercing or injectable drugs

Oh, maybe they've changed the rules. Last time i went they said you couldn't donate if you'd had sex with a woman who's had sex with a man who's had sex with a man. Even with a condom. In the swinging world you can't guarantee you haven't.

They have changed the rules but that one still stands in a slightly amended way.

Really, since almost nobody can be sure they haven't shagged a woman who has had sex with a man who has had sex with a man or with a man who has had sex with a man within the last 12 months, almost nobody should give blood according to that rule.

Like the nurse said: " you don't ask that type of shit and if you do what guarantees you that one of those people didn't lie about it?"

Exactly. That's why i wouldn't give blood. "

So... virgins only? All blood is tested and saves lives. Be honest in the questionaire and give it! There are people that need blood components everyday...

Ah there you go then. Swingers shouldn't donate."

Why are you assuming I have done any of these things with a guy? ?plus why you assume "swinger"=anything goes????

OP the pain is minimal, it's because you know it's coming it seems worse.

Tell them you are nervous and worried they won't find a vein.

They will take extra care then to find one properly.

There's nothing to be ashamed about not wanting people poking very sharp things in your body

Blood nurses are usually great at it. It's when a doctor who never normally does them tries. Then you're in trouble

Have a warm shower before you go, and keep your arms warm, it makes it easier to find the veins. It really isn't anything, I'm not a fan of needles either but needs must sometimes. Just think about the amazing breakfast your gonna have after.

Good luck!! Xxx

Make sure you have the blood taken from your non dominant arm as when the blood comes out your arm will shrivel.

It takes about two hours for the blood to drain back into your arm. Make sure you are laying down because if the blood comes straight from your head you most certainly will black out.

To speed things up raise your legs in the air. Not too high though as the blood will rush from your legs and you won't be able to walk.

Don't worry about the needle - that's the easy part. It's waiting to see what the blood test reveals that's the worrying part. Good luck anyway.

Precisely why things like HIV are on the increase amongst heterosexuals.. There's still a very inaccurate complacency it's some sort of plague that only effects gay people. Wrong!

It's an opportunistic virus that lacks the sentience to seek out and afflict a particular group over another.

If you're having casal unsafe sex, irrespective of orientation, you are at risk.

"1st one i had i passed out and threw up after , it only hurt coz she missed the vein and kept poking about luckily the next time i requested someone more used to taking blood and no issues at all

What does it say now?

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Blood-donation/Pages/Who-can-use-it.aspx

You shouldn't donate if within the last 12 months you have had sex (with or without a condom) with:

- a commercial sex worker

- someone who has injected drugs

- someone who has haemophilia (a condition that stops your blood from clotting normally) or another type of blood disorder that required clotting factor treatment

- someone who has been sexually active in parts of the world where HIV and AIDS are common – such as sub-Saharan Africa

- a man who has had oral or anal sex with another man (if you are female)

- a man (if you are male)

Ah there you go then. Swingers shouldn't donate.

Why are you assuming I have done any of these things with a guy? ?plus why you assume "swinger"=anything goes????

Can you say with absolute certainty that within the last 12 months you have definitely not had sex with a woman who has at ANY point in her life had sex with a man who at ANY point in his life had oral or anal sex with another man?

It's not just about what you have done. It's about what the people you have sex with have done.

This is the 1960 mentality that gay men are more prone to STD than straight people. Short of being in a monogamous relationship on a deserted island or being most single guys on phab-pretty much no one would be able to be 100% sure!

"

No it isn't. It's the current rules!

Can you guarantee you haven't in the last 12 months shagged a woman who has shagged a man who has ever had anal/oral with a man?

I didn't make the rules up. Maybe the National Blood Service are stuck in the 1960s but those are their rules.

The more people you have sex with, the more likely it is that you shouldn't, by their criteria, be giving blood.

Precisely why things like HIV are on the increase amongst heterosexuals.. There's still a very inaccurate complacency it's some sort of plague that only effects gay people. Wrong!

It's an opportunistic virus that lacks the sentience to seek out and afflict a particular group over another.

Even if you're having casual 'safer' sex with people who have in the past had less safe sex, you are still at risk. And should very probably not be giving blood according to the Blood Service.

In fact, anyone who has sex at all is at risk. It's just the risk increases exponentially with the number of partners.

Active swingers are high risk.

Too long to quote but anyway on the donation I discussed this with the nurse. It's something they tell you to tick no and donate, she told me to assume it unprotected sex with either. At the time i was in a monogamous relationship and we had unprotected sex (as you do with the mrs) and she said could i 100% guarantee that the mrs had not been unfaithful. And this is why they don't care about that box: how the hell would they get blood?

I had a pretty good idea... being that I discussed the matter and working in the health sector and kind of get how things work. .. at ground level you accept a lot of blood even when you are upfront and discuss it with them. The question is there so that if there is in fact an incident and something passes the net, they say that the donor lied and that they asked the question. The fact here is I have discussed this subject with a couple of nurses and other donors and no one could swear that they could absolutely tick that no box without a doubt!

I'm sure you're right.

People who regularly have casual sex with strangers are no risk at all and definitely shouldn't worry about giving blood, even if the rules say they shouldn't.

I expect the question is just there to make the page layout work better.

This discussion became pointless for many reasons: in a single guy on fab. .. how often d'yall think we meet randon strangers? Also the point is being sorely missed that THAT QUESTION MEANS ALMOST NO ONE COULD GIVE BLOOD! And the question is not: Do you met loads of people who also do so? The question is based on as far as you know. It's not assume that shit?

Also i find it highly reprensable that people here are discouraging me from giving blood when a blood nurse on duty discussed the matter and took said blood!

End of for me on this one

I think it's reprehensible that you are saying the question doesn't matter and can be ignored and you may be encouraging people who are a potential risk to go ahead, lie and give blood because "they don't care about that question".

The question is asked for a reason.

You realy don't understand English do you? I don't say the question doesn't matter, i say that when I answer the got damn question I am honest and to my best knowledge: no I have not been with anyone who has done it! The rest of this stupidity about new being or not in a high risk group is not relevant as THAT QUESTION IS NOT ASKED - that is not for shouting but to help read clearly! Above having answered the questions HONESTLY I discussed my doubts with the nurse! Why in hell has this guy's post about a blood test become focused on me giving or not blood and who entitled to personally make my life hell over giving or not blood? ??? And why is me being a blood donor and a member to fab a good enough reason for you to go all keyboard warrior over who should and not give blood?

Yes, I read English. Including this bit:

"And this is why they don't care about that box"

Encouraging people who may engage in risky sexual practices to believe that question is unimportant and "they don't care about it" is extremely irresponsible.

YOU were, you say, honest. By telling others the question doesn't matter could well encourage others to give blood without being honest about their sex life. With swingers, that's potentially dangerous.

Not everyone on here even gets tested regularly at a GUM clinic, yet will happily continue shagging around. Do you want to encourage them to lie on a form and give blood too?

Read what you've said back and consider the message you are sending to others.

Once again: i think you're the one that needs to read what was wrote: i encouraged people to be honest and answer their question as best as they know and discuss their personal circumstances- the nhs does not do assumption discrimination on their forms-neither should you, the question on there is clear and only asks that you answer it to the best of your knowledge. You should be careful of your assumptions: including the one that because I give blood and a member of fab then I am encouraging others to lie and go give blood- I didn't, I simply said what a blood nurse (who i'm sure is qualified to have an opinion) advised. People tried to go into why you could assume that being on here they should not donate and we gone to the tenis of "should or shouldn't you"! Actualy if you don't know: yes you should! It don't ask you to assume. Couldn't be clearer and not indulging bigoted confrontational opinions.

Yes, you could be clearer.

You said what a nurse advised you specifically, after you discussed your circumstances.

She said *in your case*, *at that time* it was ok to donate.

That doesn't mean the question doesn't matter, (which is what you said), and it doesn't mean that it will be ok for anyone to donate if they swing or are sexually promiscuous or adventurous.

You haven't been clear at all that people should disclose their situation honestly, every time, and that it does matter. I am not saying who should or should not donate but that swingers should be aware they may be considered to be too high a risk and must be honest about their sexual history over the previous year, every time they go to donate. It's irresponsible to do otherwise or to say things which may lead others to believe it's ok not to.

Have you disclosed every time since, honestly, how many sexual partners you've had in the past year and the circumstances in which you met them? Not that I expect you'll answer this question.

And actually, you are the one making assumptions, such as thinking Clem was saying you have had sex with men and that swingers are up for anything. He never even suggested either thing. That was down to you not understanding he was referring to what people you've had sex with have done as well as what you've done.

I'm making no assumptions other than some swingers and sexually promiscuous/adventurous people will be considered too high risk to donate blood and if they're going to try, they should be totally honest first.

Funnily enough, a lot aren't comfortable being honest about swinging or sleeping around.

If you're not going to be honest, every time, you aren't getting a valid risk assessment and should not be giving blood.

Ticking no and relying on screening technology is not good enough.

However, should you go on the NHS site and read the eligibility on there- It does not state about "high or low risk groups':You must never give blood or platelets if

You are HIV positive.

You have hepatitis B.

You have hepatitis C.

You have HTLV.

You are a man who, in the last 12 months has had oral or anal sex with another man (even if you used a condom or other protective).

You have ever received money or drugs for sex.

You have ever injected, or been injected with, drugs; even a long time ago or only once. This includes body-building drugs and injectable tanning agents. You may be able to give if a doctor prescribed the drugs. Please check with us to make sure.A partner who is, or you think may be:

HIV positive

a hepatitis B carrier

a hepatitis C carrier

HTLV positive

(If you are a woman) a man who has ever had oral or anal sex with another man, even if they used a condom or other protective. There are exceptions, so please check.

A partner who has ever received money or drugs for sex.

A partner who has ever injected, or been injected with, drugs - even a long time ago or only once. This includes body-building drugs and injectable tanning agents. You may be able to give if a doctor prescribed the drugs. Please check with us to make sure.

A partner who has, or may have been, sexually active in parts of the world where HIV/ AIDS is very common. This includes most countries in Africa. There are exceptions, so please check with us to make sure.

Read it, or not I'm not that bothered really and where in there does it state that if you're a swinger you shouldnt donate? There are threads on this forum about it and there are many others donating who are on here too, my opinion remains: if best of your knowledge you can answer that question honestly then give blood: ruling yourself out because the people do you had protected sex with might have been promiscuous/unsafe is not asked of you.

Actually the only difference is the thickness of the needle and time taken-otherwise same procedure, samples are taken to be tested in every donation. The subject was brought up because it envolves the missing of a vein and what happened. It gone off topic when a couple of people decided to focus on that subject and on the ethics of swingers and other "high risk group" donating!

People tried to go into why you could assume that being on here they should not donate and we gone to the tenis of "should or shouldn't you"! Actualy if you don't know: yes you should! It don't ask you to assume. Couldn't be clearer and not indulging bigoted confrontational opinions.

There are threads on this forum about it and there are many others donating who are on here too, my opinion remains: if best of your knowledge you can answer that question honestly then give blood: ruling yourself out because the people do you had protected sex with might have been promiscuous/unsafe is not asked of you."

I put a link to the information earlier and quoted part of it so obviously I am aware of it.

I didn't say anyone should rule themselves out. You're not reading what I wrote. I'm saying they should be completely honest, every time, about their sex life and be prepared to be told they're too high risk.

The fact remains that the rules say you shouldn't donate if within 12 months you have had sex with anyone in the groups stated.

Of course, you may not know. However, swingers and those that have casual sex are more likely to have more sex, with more partners, than average, so the risk is greater. They'll take this information into account.

I note you haven't answered the question about whether you are completely honest about how many partners you've had, and in what circumstances, every time you donate.

What you've said seems to suggest you just tick no on the basis of assuming "they don't care", based on something you were told when you were in a monogamous relationship with a partner. Even if the partner is cheating, the risk assessments for that scenario and swinging are likely to be very, very different.

"depends where they take it from.. wrist and back of the hand are a bitch!!

arm is the best option. try and keep warm as veins will be closer to the surface.

honestly the most painful bit is where you tear off the plaster after.. ive hair on my arms n that stings like a bitch

Oh good, back on topic Well done C&S.

I don't understand why donating blood was even brought into a thread on getting a blood test.

They're totally different.

Actually the only difference is the thickness of the needle and time taken-otherwise same procedure, samples are taken to be tested in every donation. The subject was brought up because it envolves the missing of a vein and what happened. It gone off topic when a couple of people decided to focus on that subject and on the ethics of swingers and other "high risk group" donating!"

Rubbish. The level of discomfort, the procedure and the aftercare are all totally different.

The OP is about a simple blood test. Horror stories about how painful donating blood can be are irrelevant to that, and probably didn't help the OP feel any better.

OP drink plenty so your veins are plump and easily located.. and I'm not on about alcohol!

Tell them it's your first blood test they will explain what will happen.

Try not to tense the arm they are using when it's about to happen.. take a deep breath and relax.

Best of luck.

I've had hundreds over the years and only when I turned 30 did I stop crying.. needlephobia.. though I still react just not as bad.

Let us know how it went.

"I've had a lot, hundreds even and i can honestly say. Horrible.

Give over! Pussy!

Honestly OP they are NOTHING!

It's a fasting one and people have told me they hurt and I hate needles "

I'm the same as you. Got plenty of tattoos and freak out at bloody tests and injections. The needles on a tattoo gun are nothing like needles at a doctors, so it's not really a comparison.

Just don't hold your breath (I did that when I was pregnant and after 4 vials I nearly passed out) relax as much as you can and it'll be over in a flash. I get in a right state beforehand and then wonder what all the fuss was about afterwards every time!!

Yes I am honest, it might it not be of use but is related to blood being drawn from you. I don't understand how it was then taken to its death over who is or not eligible to donate and who stated what and said what and read our misread and was honest or not honest. I will continue to donate blood and what I discuss or not,my sex life or if I "appear to sound dishonest or care about the nature of the question" is not really for the forums or for some opinionated stranger to question on a public forum: you just don't know all the details and is none of your business to. This is my life and, what I chose to do, and if I ever need an opinion I'll discuss it with a professional and get one off someone qualified. Topic finished for me, done with the moral high horse and endless argument over who said what and how and where.

You were the one that brought the subject onto a public forum which makes it open to discussion by anyone that feels like it. Don't want to discuss it? Want it to stay private? Don't post about it on here.

I stand by my statement that telling people the blood service "don't care about" that question is incorrect and irresponsible.

It's everyone's responsibility to disclose the required information fully and honestly each time. In fact they ask you to the statement to the effect that you've been honest, if I remember correctly.

Just the same as you shouldn't tick "yes" if you don't know, you shouldn't just automatically tick "no" either.

I never said you shouldn't give blood. I said you should be honest and fully disclose the required information each and every time you donate and be prepared for them to refuse the blood.

"unlike having a bone marrow biopsy which is the most excruciatingly painful procedure I have ever endured "

Hurts that doesn't it Made the mistake of saying a new doctor could practice on me on my second one, 5 attempts, then I said no more and got the expert in to do it. I virtually crawled out of there.

"If you have a problem with the needle, you need to think of something else! Don't give in to obcess about it... tell yourself that it's fine. Look away or look at it. .. look at a video of it on YouTube and you'll know if you should look or not... i like watching it while I donate blood... my record so far is a pint in 4 minutes "

M3gam4n, sometimes you will never win on here no matter what you say. Some people like to trawl the forums looking for an argument and they like to twist your words to put you down. It's important to give blood, good on you for doing so. Keep up the good work.
