Anyone else getting sick of crappy cover versions of great songs?
"I can't be arsed to write my own music, I'll just stick a dance beat to an old tune, and the kids will lap it up thinking it's brand new"
The latest being 'fast car'. Utter bollocks. |

Yet you hardly ever hear people.calling out ub40 they started well but just became a lazy covers band, yet the role if Birmingham for the most part hold them up as one if the great bands if the west midlands, and when you look at Judas priest, led zeplin, black Sabbath, slade, even duran duran, it makes Mr want to lump them in with 5 star, rant over |

There are some GREAT cover versions, but I do whole heartedly agree. There are certainly far too many new acts who burst onto the scene on the back of a re-hashed classic.... Although I do prefer that to dance remixes of other people's tunes, or using samples to add some quality and familiarity to an otherwise unlistenable dirge.
My favourite covers include, The Housemartins' Caravan of Love, Joe Cocker's - With a Little Hepl From My Friends, and Mettalica's version of Whisky in the Jar.

Some covers are brilliant and some are complete utter tripe. Personally I love the ones that take a song but change it in a significant way and give it a new spin
For a brilliant example check out Running up that hill, by The Stars of Track and Field. Amazing version of the original hit |

Hurt by johnny cash, just shows you can convey emotion with someone else's words, I'm not a massive fan of slowing down a song till the melody is almost un recognizable, I blame Gary julles for that, but rock versions of non rock songs, if done well, are great, I heard a version of burn by usher, that was awesome |

"Perfect Day" is a song written by Lou Reed in 1972, originally featured on Transformer, Reed's second post-Velvet Underground solo album, and as the B-side of his major hit, "Walk on the Wild Side".
okay it was done as a cover for children in need which is fair enough, but they ruined the song. |

Fully agree with you on Hurt, Johnny Cash done such an amazing take on that song. I think the highest accolade is that Trent Reznor said he thought it was great |

Ray Davies, of the kinks, wrote great songs, but the original versions sound underpowered.
Most cover versions turn up the rock, and sound better to me...
But I also enjoy hayseed dixie.
As for slower versions, Kylie singing 'I should be so lucky' on jools holland's hootananny sounds good to me.

Some great covers that are better than the originals in my opinion.
Manics- umbrella
Johnny Cash - hurt
Hendrix - all along the watchtower
Tori amos' take on smells like teen spirit
Kirsten Dunst - turning Japanese.

"Bit controversial but I prefer The Futureheads version of Hounds of Love to Kate Bush's.
Blocked "
I also prefer Take On Me done by Reel Big Fish to A-Ha. Greeneyes disapproves of this as she love Morbid Harknell or whatever his name is. |

There and to the left a bit |
There are few cover versions that are "better" than the original in my opinion, although there are a lot that are "as good as" for example:
One Step Beyond - Prince Buster/Madness
It Must Be Love - Labi Siffre/Madness
Try A Little Tenderness - Otis Redding/The Commitments
Iron Shirt - Max Romeo/Prodigy/Madness
And a few more already mentioned on this thread.
For me the mark of a good cover is when a band/artist takes the original and puts their own spin on it, changing it sufficiently to make it their own, whilst still making it recognisable. |

Worst cover ever,Scissor sisters comfortably numb, a 'Floyd classic murdered! As well as any classic rock/punk tracks done acoustically with weak, breathy vocals.
Killer covers, Muse Feeling good,
Disturbed Land of confusion, Van Halen You really got me,awesome! |

"Gabrielle Aplin done a great cover if frankies power of love"
Not a fan of that cover version to be honest. I'm sure she is a good singer but to me, the cover just felt toned down and bland. It didn't have anything Christmassy in it whereas the original had the nativity story |

I think most artists/bands will do a cover at some point. Generally in the form of a tribute to someone they admire.
When it's just an obvious money making gambit is when I like it less.
(I loved Adele's cover of The Cure's Lovesong, and I am a huge Cure fan.) |

There are some songs that are to great not to be covered and ruined. And a lot of band fucking up a song. Some great artists actually make a song better. Progression. What if someone said they shouldn't redo a hoover 20 years ago. Wouldn't have a dyson lol.
Anyway can't beat this cover

Jerry Lee Lewis cover of Kris Kristofferson’s, Sunday Morning Coming Down. You can hear in his voice that this guy has so lived this song for real.
Another good cover is Roger Daltry doing Leo Sayer’s ‘Giving it all away’, as is Christy Moore playing the Pink Floyd classic Shine on you crazy diamond. |
