I don't think I go unnoticed, but the attention I do get is sometimes the wring sort, especially after I've had a rant on the forum, I'm trying to change that though |

the title of this thread made me smile - reminded me of comics like mrs brown - when they mention monthlies (which is what went through my head when i saw it) - when they are chattering and then whisper - the you know  |

It's true, I do often get mentioned in dispatches but I'm certainly not one of the regular crew. Sometimes it just seems that 90% of the posts are made by the same ten people all the time.
I just worry that this can put off some of those that lurk in the shadows. I sometimes wonder if that can be a bit unwelcoming or offputting to the newbies and the invisibles. I'd like to see more people join in on the forums.

The reason 'cliques' (yes sorry to bring up the C word!) are often mentioned on here is because whenever there's a 'which Forumite would you thread' the same roll call of people always get mentioned (and I accept now and then I get wrapped up too and sometimes mentioned so I'm not trying to be hypocritical here).
You can play 'roll call bingo' in those threads and shout "House" when all the usuals have been ticked off!
Actually it's the 95% of unsung posters that really make the forums the diverse place they are and so well done OP for celebrating the unmentionables which are the lifeblood of the forums!! Group hug everyone xx |

I ain't complaining about not being a member of Kool and the Gang. I'm quite happy ambling along, posting now and again. Subtlety is the name of my game. I guess I could post more often (I'm responsible for my own hype) but I lack motivation. Anyway, I always preferred Earth Wind and Fire!

Is this thread about those kind of topics putting others off posting or about regulars not getting mentioned in them.
All forums well anything have "in" topics.
The guess who thread yesterday you could only join in if you knew people on the forums.
But if you look down the topic list there are far more threads that anyone can post on. Fun threads or serious threads. People should concentrate on what they can join in and not what they can't.
We where all new once how did we manage to stay here?
I do!think newbies should be welcomed, but they also need to understand that people won't jump at your feet.
Look how people generally interact. If you went and joined a new social group somewhere, people will probably start by smiling and nodding there head, then the odd word, the more they see you and the more you join in the more you will get included. It doesn't just happen on here.
As for the popularity threads, is anyone seriously concerned if they get a mention or not.
If I took a blind bit of notice of them or which is best big boobs small boobs my head would burst.
Popularity threads are based on what's currant and what people see at that time.
If someone said to me name three forumites the first three that would come into my head would probably be the people most active at that time. So if someone is posting alot they get noticed, stop posting for a bit and someome else will come to!the forefront

This is actually really interesting. There is research being conducted (and some that has already been condicted) on group formation and communication in online media. Different personalities tend to have different functions in group text communication. They first started noticing this behavior with the advent of Internet chat rooms.
It is often studied in contrast to "real time" group formation (done in groups interacting face to face).
The forums would actually be a great place to study this

yes some people want to be popular, but if where using this website as an example. Or shall we say the forums. People get noticed in a certain way whether it's by their pictures, sense of fun. Or something else.
How do we tell if someone is popular on the forums. Is it by the amount of people that constantly tell them openly or the amount of people that pm them or the the amount of people who sit back and say nothing but quietly, fancy, like, respect someone. We can only see percieved popularity on the forums.

This is actually really interesting. There is research being conducted (and some that has already been condicted) on group formation and communication in online media. Different personalities tend to have different functions in group text communication. They first started noticing this behavior with the advent of Internet chat rooms.
It is often studied in contrast to "real time" group formation (done in groups interacting face to face).
The forums would actually be a great place to study this

I think we are all quite different in person and an online presence is just highlighting a certain area of our personality. In my own case Im quite shy and private whereas here I bare all and can come across as ultra confident (apparently). It lets me explore part of myself which helps me become more confident in real life situations.

Personally, I would come off better in a real life situation than I do on the forums. I'm quite animated when I converse face to face which doesn't come across on here. |
