I went deaf in one ear last year. Since then I've had horrendous tinnitus. It's not just a hiss but a roar along with beeps and bangs. At times very painful.
I found the music and such like just didn't work. Now I have managed to get my head round it and can mostly ignore it but at times it drives me nuts.
The thing I miss about being deaf? The silence as I am never awu from this infernal noise. |

When was the last time you saw a specialist?
They help you with some relaxation techniques now.
It's dreadful I have it in my Right ear. I can't sit and read like quietly like I used to. I have to have background noise all the time. |

It's an every evolving field that was under funded for years you may find something new that helps if you give it another go. |

i have it and yes from time to time i have long phases of it being so loud you wonder others cant hear it also - i started with it after taking fluoxetine many years ago - its a side effect but it never went away unfortunately - i put on background music if it troubles me - have tried apps like white music etc but im such a poor sleeper that extra noise tends to keep me awake more than the tinnitus - just have to keep trying coping mechanisms and see which work best for you |

My dad hated it but just got used to it luckily the hearing aids completely stopped it for him. I can often hear my heart beat in my ear which is a form of it and it's annoying. |

I've not found the relaxation stuff works at all. I'm also back to the audiologist tomorrow. They are seeing about fitting a bone anchored hearing aid.
The ones I've looked at have a Bluetooth facility and you can stream your phone into it. They also have little microphones connected by blueblutooth that you give to someone you're with in say a crowded place. Can you imagine? Mrs T will have it on whilst we are in a club or something. I'll be two rooms away and get her voice in my head....stop looking at her boobs! |

I've had it for 8 years after a middle ear infection. It's constant, but gets louder when I have a cold. Fortunately it's not a high pitched beep so I can cope. It's a swishy pulse noise and I don't really notice it a lot of the time. I've had lots of investigations to find the cause but nothing was found that could explain it. |

I suffer with tinnitus but mine is mostly a hissing noise so it's not generally too intrusive. I also have hearing loss and got given a hearing aid, not to contend with the hearing loss so much as the tinnitus!
It does help when it's bad. |

I like total silence to go to sleep, really feel for you
I've had ringing in my ears after playing gigs but started to wear ear plugs.
A car audio group im on, a guy has broken 162dB with his install....that really is somewhere you don't want to be without hearing protection, at that pressure level your vision will blur and it'll be hard to breathe. |

permanent high pitched noise for me, like something only dogs can hear lol.
Learnt to ignore it mostly but sometimes it gets so loud that it's painful.
Seems to happen more with certain noises, worse is if a baby is crying, that one really hurts, loud music is bad too, have to leave any pub or shop playing loud music.
Feel sorry for all these people who walk around with headphone buds stuck down their ears pumping out music, they will regret it when the tinnitus kicks in

Tinnitus is sonething I've endured for at least 20 years. Problem was caused whilst in the army firing rifles etc with inadequate hearing protection. To help me sleep at night I alwsys have either the radio or tv on quiet and on a sleep timer . I got issued with some hearing aids on the nhs that had a sound generator built in to supposedly mask yhe tinnitus in all honesty they don't work that well. I'm sure in time you'll learn to ignore the noise like I have done |

I've been toying with the idea of starting a thread on this topic for ages but didn't think it was common enough to get much feedback.
I've had it since I was about 12. The same age my dad got it too incidentally. Because it started so young for me it felt normal so it doesn't bother me. I just hate when the pitch changes suddenly.
I also get the sound of my heart beat cheeky chops. Didn't realise that was a form of tinnitus too. |

Another sufferer here.
30 year's in building trade, large portions of that spent working at Heathrow airport by the runways.
Construction noise and plane noise.
Now just a constant high pitched tone in both ears along with a shushing noise.
When it's quiet the noise can be deafening.
Can't see it improving |

Certain high pitched noises can set mine off. I learnt to recognise the intro to a particular song recently so I could switch the radio off in time. And when films or tv use a feedback noise that can trigger mine or even change the pitch - the usual white noise hissy sound is fairly bearable. |

Veering off at a slight tangent:
I went into a caff today and the radio station was a load of gibber and shite music, too loud as well. I said "could you do me a favour and turn the radio down please, I've got a bit of tinnitus"

"Has anyone heard of that treatment that matches the frequency and can "cure" the effects?"
I've had it for around ten years now following a growth that messed up the little bones in my right ear. I now have a plastic bit in there to restore some of my hearing but have a constant humb and whistle now. I've was given a white noise generator to ware it's the size of an ear plug or the size of a small internal hearing aid. It makes a noise that mimics the tinnitus and all you need to do is have the noise generated louder than the tinnitus for around 16hours a day then when you turn it of the tinnitus is less noticeable. It takes a long time to program your head to make this work. But work it dose it reduced it down around 80%. But I'm a builder and keep triggering it off at work so for me the reasults are limited. Hope this helps. |

I've managed to tune mine out, i only notice it when i think about it and it gets louder when i'm over tired so i hear it then.
Don't know how i tuned it out but my brain is able to tune out loads of things that bother me so i'm guessing that's how. |

I've had it for 15 years - every last second of it.
It's linked somehow to my headaches, tiredness and stress - amongst other things. Loud noises increase it for me.
Reducing my stress levels, getting a large amount of rest as well as good sleep is how I help minimize its effects upon my life.
Assume it to potentially be part brain and part hearing induced - it may just be one for you. White noise etc isn't particularly effective for me. |

I'm very similar on recognition of those sound triggers and then avoiding or altering the situation. The tv especially is a major hazard zone - though my central heating is another.
The heating is a constant hum, as it's - I think - largely the pumping sound, not the boiler. |

If you hear a ringing in your ears, don't try and answer it
But seriously, I've had it for 20 years plus in my left ear, constant humming. I think it's down to all the rather loud gigs I went to in my late teens and playing music through head phones way too loud.
I hate it but live with it. At least it's not a constant moaning like many married men have! |

"Sorry to hear so many on here have this terrible condition, someone mentioned Earlier that listening to music with ear Buds connected for example mp3 player, could this set it off? if so I will not Wear mine again."
It can arise from a number of causes, either within your ears or brain. One off noise or repeated experience can initiate it - one instance may be the straw that breaks the camels back.
Once someone has it then they may be able to hear it all the time, or it may come and go.
Hearing protection is important overall - once gone it's unlikely to return and this includes aiming to prevent tinnitus. Resting your ears is helpful, where you're subjected to potentially harmful noise. Avoiding damaging noises is good too.
A lot of musicians take steps to limit further damage, following problems starting when they were younger.
I used to love incredibly loud music - I don't have the luxury to be able to now, as it's too painful for me at the time and afterwards. |

I've had it seven years.
It ruined my life for many of these. In fact, I considered taking my own life because of it. I just wanted it to stop so badly I'd even consider going to that length. People do do that - a friend of a friend did.
I wasn't a real person any more, it was like tinnitus "was me". I didn't go on holiday because I knew I wouldn't enjoy it because of the tinnitus.
I can deal with it better now.
Medications can cause it - I'm convinced anti-depressants caused mine, as someone else mentioned. I can't prove it though. |

Omg thanks for bringing this up Rossi. I've had a loud high pitched whistle in my tight ear for the last 3 weeks. It's definitely tinnitus. I just hope it don't get any worse. I'm told there is no cure.
I'm hoping the only way to block it is the exhaust note from my Fireblade! But that's months away! |

Genuinely glad you've found a way to cope and to rationalise this. It's hard to do that.
I presume the headband and earphone will emit noise at a frequency that cancels the noise out. Thanks for the heads up excitement. |

Had a bit of a virus thingy.
Now feel like right ear is stuffed with cotton wool and there is a horrible high pitched whine. Wonder if this is another step down the road to eventual deafness.
This is horrible feeling. Used to work in mining industry and regularly encountered well over 100 Db sounds. Must have destroyed my ears.
I did have a claim settled a couple of years ago and at the time the testing audiometrist asked me if I had tinnitus to which I replied I didn't think I had. But after the test and after I'd accepted the offer. I thought shit........ I have got ringing in my ears. It was almost as if my brain had not thought there was a problem and when he mentioned it I've been thinking about it ever since. Very worrying.
As the OP says this is not a nice feeling at all.

The tubes leading to your ear is blocked due to the virus, it's usually blocked with fluid that hasn't drained as yet. Take some decongestant tablets. It takes time for all the fluid to drain then the noise should stop. My ears are just starting to clear now and slowly the noise is going. |

I'm 36 and have suffered since birth. I'm pretty much deaf in my right ear and it's that side that I hear the ringing and rushing noises and a whole heap of other sounds.
After 36 years I'm pretty used to it now. I generally notice it more when it's really quiet and it can annoy me if I'm tired or stressed about something.
I try my best not to let it get to me but if my guard is down, if I'm upset or worried about something else then it can be very distressing.
I've never tried any kind of relaxation techniques, I might have to research this as it could help when I'm feeling particularly low.

Mine comes and goes but the high pitch whistle is annoying. I also get the pulsing noise as well. I know through working in factories that were noisy I'm progressing to it permanently.
It's distracting and certainly not something I wish to suffer 24/7 , my mr also has it in his right ear but seems to cope with it most of the time x |

Mine is like a static white noise. Like that identifiable noise that some electronic devices make when they are on stand by. I am so used to it now that l barely even notice it or bother. Guess I'm lucky. Annoying thing is that l got it from a live gig. |

My heart goes out to you. I don't know how I will manage if this goes louder.
My home is really quite. No traffic sounds etc.
As I sit of a night, it sounds like there's a valve distant height pitched tone. The only way I can suscribe is when a radiator valve isn't closed properly.
This has lead to insomnia. If I wake in the night, it's impossible for me to get my head down again as the sound is too distracting.
I also think it explains why I keep so busy doing things in the day.

This has lead to insomnia. If I wake in the night, it's impossible for me to get my head down again as the sound is too distracting.
I also think it explains why I keep so busy doing things in the day.

Yes,sleeping is hard work im finding it very difficult lately and its taking its toll on me |

I bought a sleep pillow which has a speaker inside and you can plug it into ant device and play whatever but i found the tinnitus got louder above the music and there was just to much noise im head |

I don't find soothing or other sounds help me either. My best steps are to get regular good rest and to keep stress levels low. I always push for quiet hotel rooms etc too, as noise makes mine worse. |

I've suffered with it for a number of years, as a result of years of listening to loud music. In the beginning it really got me down, but I've almost learnt to live with it now. I have good and bad days. |

I was told to "make the noise my friend" because I'm lumbered with it for the rest of my life. Constantly "popping" my ears which can't be good for them but gives slight relief in a strange way.
Now I have to keep our tv on all night to try drown out the ringing/hissing but I'm living ok with it at the moment.
Hope the Op is ok and found some sort of relief, serious tinnitus can cause dreadful reactions in the long run

Distraction is important. I just wish I had a missus like yours to take my mind off it .
Sorry, I shouldn't make crap comments. I do know exactly where you are coming from with this. |

Not sure if I have this, my left ear just started ringing a few days before Easter and hasn't stopped since. Made it really difficult to revise for my exams |

This was reported on Friday about the Inspiral Carpets drummer Craig Gill, who suffered increased titnitus before taking his life last year. It's quite a sad report but does bring attention to it
