Hi all,anyone had experience of coming off this drug?I have been on 30mgs fir 3 months and thinking of come off due to the side effects,was planning on going cold turkey as I haven't been on the drug for long,any advice appreciated,Kevin |

I have been off work for 3 months and need to get back to work,I don't want to be reliant on the tablets,all my GP is interested in is writing a prescription out,I have got a counselling session booked next week,thanks for your replies. |

Im on 45's and have been for over a year, i aint experienced any noticable side effects although i have went a few days between scripts not taking them and do notice an increase in attacks . I woukd advise against just cutting them completely just like that as the shock on your body can make things worse . Go back down to 15's and ween yrself gradually . And also speak to yr gp about this . He will tell you the same as i .

I am a HGV driver and worried my concentration will not be up to scratch whilst on the tablets,I have been on various websites regarding this drug and it depressed me even more reading the forums,I just want peoples experiences' that's all. |

Thanks golden gun,I have read forums where people have been on the drug for up to ten years,that's not for me,I have had some bad life event's in the last few months and it's taken it's toll. |

Disclaimer - I'm not a medical person.
I do have considerable experience with SSRIs. They are all powerful drugs that alter brain chemistry.
My advice would be speak to your doctor and come off them very slowly. Some people get off them ok, but people worldwide have struggled terribly when rushing to be free of them or stopping abruptly.
I think doctors are more aware of the difficulties people have coming off them these days (I quit 10 years ago and it was hell). I'd hope he or she would be willing to negiotiate a programme that works for you.
I know it seems a pain to do it slow, but I've seen so many people who went quickly (often in agreement with the doctor) and were back on them for a year or two. This pattern often repeated a few times. I'd say it's better to take time and get it right the first time.
I should add that I took one they no longer prescribe because of the side effects and difficulty coming off. It wasn't your one.
Having said all that, the best advice is to be aware, informed and sensible about these drugs and withdrawing from them. Forge a good relationship with your GP.

Definitely see your gp. If you get no luck from your usual gp book to see another at the practice.
Doing it with supervision is the only way really.

Very understandable. I will admit that I'm not a fan of these medications at all. However, I will say that some people feel they can't live without them and some get on fine with them. I wouldn't persuade them otherwise.
It took three attempts to get off mine. I think you said you weren't on very long - that may well be a help in this process.
I'm using six months as an example here, not saying that's how long your should take:
It may seem like an eternity, but better to take six months and be properly free than come off in one month, struggle massively, go back on for six months, come off in two months, go back for a year.........and so on.
You may not experience problems coming off quickly and different meds do have different impacts of course. |
