I really need another car but don't want to take finance out on a new one. I want a used one for about £1.500 but I know nothing about cars. Looking for advice on what makes I should be looking at. I know it's not a lot of money but mostly will be used for work and back. Thank-you in advance for any advice x |

If you want a boring, bullet proof car buy a Toyota Corolla, mine had 186,000 miles with no problems or rust.
Seriously find someone who really knows what they're doing and take them for the price of a few pints |

Little mileage and just a commute means a passat will probably be too big for your needs.
Rather than the focus, have a look at the fiesta too.
Probably less tax and insurance than the vw |

Personally I'd go for a Skoda Octavia, brilliant cars. Good for well over 5000,000 if you look after them right. |

"Topsy is selling a rather gorgeous and VERY rare Alfa Spider.... lol Google's Alfa spider. I'm very ignorant when it comes to cars "
Better Google Acidio Verde 916 Alfa Spider then. There was only ever 26 in the UK and there's only 10 left now. |

I had a brand new Micra waiting for me when I passed my driving test. The positioning of the pedals made my legs ache. |

"Read up on some reviews, if it was me I would say the original beetle, oil cooled engine and bomb proof. Everyone you ask will give you a different answer.
Good look in the search."
They're air cooled... |

For what your doing deffinatly 100% do not buy a diesel! The newer ones have a dpf that will simply just get clogged up replacment £700-£800, if you have a local mechanic or even a local fackbook group that sells cars ask questions, I pick a lot of my buyers up, sell cheap cars I've persoanly fixed up and never had anyone walk away from my cars unhappy (not trying to sell to you as were in Liverpool)
The more time a seller is willing to invest in you as a buyer shows they are more genuine |

That's interesting - are you saying there's a minimum annual mileage they need to do? And does that apply to older plates too, like 10 yrs or similar? |

They're nice to drive too. I just sold my VRS which had 150k on the clock but ran perfectly.
I'd advise going Germany or Japanese for reliability and build quality.
Whatever you buy check for service history (Inc cambelt and waterpump) and do some research into typical weak points and faults on that particular model.
Parkers Performance Guide website is a good place to start. |

Dpf's although a ball ache clogg up as often as they do coz yr driving way to slow . It requires a good thrashing regular . An engine be it deisel or petrol is designed to rev up not potter about . All cars break down eventually . .
Iv had fiestas corsa nova escort sierra mondeo vectra cavalier celica you name it .
Now i own a vw sharan 1.9 tdi pd 90 hp . Cheap on insurance and cheap to run . Now at almost 2 ton in weight and only 90 hp that thing will pull a hpuse down . And it can either be a mini bus a car or a van . Id not own anything else now |

12k or above is wise for a modern diesel. Its not just the DPF though. The EGR valve and swirl flaps need a good long run frequently to reduce clogging of the inlet manifold. |
