Err no I'm actually a big wiki leaks fan but the charges from what I understand are slightly bizarre.
It appears assange had sexual relations with two women within the wiki leaks organisation, these two women went to the Swedish police wanting him to be forced into a std and dna test, they said they couldn't force him and he refused one woman alleged that he deliberately broke a condom and the other had a bizarre statement about some sort of conversation that took place mid sex..
Anyhow from what I can gather the charges are there to force him into the tests?...
Sweden also refused him residency (which for a country who happily takes in millions of immigrants seems strange) but what I read was that residency would stop his deportation to the US where they want to jail him for life for whistleblowing.... Assange himself is a bit of an oddball, he's very aggressive in what he releases, however in his defence he says the system is set up so that nobody including himself knows who's blowing what whistle??. |

I wish they'd come up with another word for this kind of shit and not call it rape. It's a fucking insult to people like that poor Indian girl who got attacked on a bus by complete strangers when she was just trying to go about her normal life.
A guy who you knew and consented with at some point, but subsequently turned out to be an arse; is still wrong. But it's not even in the same ball park. I |

They left in place a charge of sexual harassment

It's disgraceful that the UK could become a pariah rogue state and not recognize the UN ruling. Especially after lecturing and invading countless places and dictatorships over the years.
He should be allowed to leave the embassy and permitted to fly wherever he chooses. |

Really? Which statement? I have read the legal judgement from the President of the Queen's Bench and it is clear that he would be charged with rape in this country too. I'd be happy to direct you to the cps website...

it's just their way of sticking two fingers up to the UK because of tatchers interference in the british judicial process. interference that resulted in him being allowed to return to chile instead of facing trial for his crimes. she also interfered with the border control process when he initially turned up here travelling on a forged passport. |

I can't be bothered to read the other posts, but this irritates me beyond belief. He's been accused of rape. In Sweden. It's not like it would be deportation to the Yemen.
If he worked in Argos or something he wouldn't be able to evade the judicial process in this way. No one should be above the law, even if they think they're some sort of person of monumental historical importance.

Thankfully, it's not a decision or a verdict, it's a UN report with no legal standing whatsoever. There is nowhere for him to be "freed" from, since it's entirely his own choice to hole up in the embassy. If he wants a legal decision then he should take it to the ECHR. |

don't think he's put in for compensation.. Yet. Apparently the only reason hevs there is because he can't get any guarantee he won't be extridited thw the USA. yep, they have to get him out somehow though. As far as i'm aware there's no arrest warrent for him in the US, its a european one. So far anyway. |

The UK government will say pretty much anything, it's not a reliable source of the truth. I think it should accept this legal opinion, based upon international law, from the UN, to prevent any further fall in its international standing. How low can this once great country go? |

yeah... about that un working group....
1) it is a 6 member panal.. well.. was!
1 recused herself because she was an australian citizen and didn't want to be seen as showing bias.... 2 actually voted against the decision... and 3 did... so its not quite as clear cut as people would make it seen.....
2) part of the reason the group found against uk and sweden is the amount of time it was taken.... but thats not the uk and sweden fault.... that is assange fighting it in court after court in which all the decisions did not go his way
there is still an EAW outstanding... and he flounted his UK bail conditions...... |

So the Swedish authorities have revoked the warrant for his arrest and dropped the investigation, although the British Police have stated that he will still be arrested if he leaves the Ecuadorian Embassy.
Aren't the Swedish Authorities sending out a message that if you're wanted on suspicion of a crime, all you've got to do is seek asylum in a foreign Embassy for 5 years and the case will be dropped?
I think this is despicable.
In my view, if he was innocent, surely he shouldn't have had anything to fear from standing trial |

Aren't the Swedish Authorities sending out a message that if you're wanted on suspicion of a crime, all you've got to do is seek asylum in a foreign Embassy for 5 years and the case will be dropped?
I think this is despicable.

Just seen Assange's Twitter account.
He's said this:
"Detained for 7 years without charge by while my children grew up and my name was slandered. I do not forgive or forget.
"
There's 2 issues with that:
1. He wasn't "Detained"..he ran and hid in an Embassy.
2. "Without Charge"
...well no..because you fucking ran. |

I think I recall back at that time that he was suspicious of the UK or Sweden handing him over to the USA - plus it appeared that the Swedish crimes weren't being handled under standard process. He had made himself available to the Swedish authorities too, I think.
The UK spent far too much taxpayers money holding him under police surveillance. |
