Should We Replace Trident?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Does anyone actually know how much 1 billion actually is?

American English it has always equated to a thousand million (i.e. 1,000,000,000). British English has now adopted the American figure, though, so that a billion equals a thousand million in both varieties of English

The current cost to replace trident now stands at £167 Billion

Can you imagine what the UK can do with that amount of money putting it towards the NHS, Schools, Housing and much more.

But wait, people say we need trident to protect our borders!! so why is it, if that is the case, that the worst terrorist attacks happened in USA (twin towers) France and UK as all 3 have nuclear protection

I back world nuclear disarmament, I am sure many are against this, but why?

167 thousand million to be spent on trident whilst the UK lives in poverty with shocking housing, food banks and a crumbing NHS

Why?

I would love to live in a world without nukes but that's bot the reality. The reality is we have enemies who have nukes and need to keep our own deterrent.

Poverty in the UK? Very rare. Unfortunately the numbers you hear are based on an eu measure of poverty which is relative to where you live. In other words you can have sky tv, a pc, smart phones and what not and still be classed as in poverty.

Have you read the Wiki page regarding the un safe practices that occurs on board with its staff?

"The total acquisition cost of the Trident programme was £9.8 billion, or £14.9 billion at 2005 prices, 38% of which was incurred in the U.S. In 2005/2006, annual expenditure for running and capital costs was estimated at between £1.2bn and £1.7bn and was estimated to rise to £2bn to £2.2bn in 2007/2008, including Atomic Weapons Establishment costs. Since Trident became operational in 1994, annual expenditure has ranged between 3% and 4.5% of the annual defence budget, and was expected to increase to 5.5% of the defence budget by 2007/2008.[24][34] Each missile costs nearly £17 million.[35]

Various studies have put the cost of the programme much higher – according to Greenpeace, replacing the program would cost £34bn,[36] while the upkeep of the system over its 30-year life could run up to £130bn.[37] According to the BASIC think tank, cancelling the program would save the budget over £83bn over the next 50 years.[38]"

Its nice to actually put the REAL figures, rather than scare-mongering with MADE UP figures!!!

Bottom line, with both Russia and China's expansionist policies, the UK needs to have a deterrent, one which we hope we will never had to use.

Absolute poverty exists in the UK. This is fact.

Our relative wealth, globally speaking, means in my mind that poverty is something we should be ashamed of.

Just as in poor societies, wealth is something to be ashamed of.

I'm most certainly for the scrapping of trident..

But it is quite an awkward situation. What do we do with the sailors, what about the local businesses affected by the closure ect. This is why corbyn has the idea of disarming the nukes but keeping the subs active in my opinion. Sure this would solve the problem of jobs ect but it's counter productive if you fall for the old we need them to protect our borders. We are in a perpetual state of war at all times. We as a country are the aggressor not the victim...

The UK will never allow itself to be unprotected and unarmoured as long as other states continue to pursue or bulk up their nuclear amourment.

And neither we should.

Yes, it's an unthinkable amount of money, but with that spending effectively ensures the mass safety of our country and borders.

So let the Americans take the role.

Our nukes aren't independent. They are a relic of the Cold War, a political sop and can't be used without American say-so.

Who are we gonna fight?

We're not gonna nuke Islamic State, are we. North Korea is on the other side of the planet and their nuke currently fit in to sea containers. I doubt we'll have a war with Russia any time soon.

All trident does is ensure that nobody wants nuclear war. You have to have it, apparently, to know that you don't want it.

I know it is not a popular thing to say but we need our nuclear deterrent, it is our guarantee of freedom. As has just been proven with the Ukraine you cannot rely on another countries nuclear umbrella to guarantee our borders. No aggressor is going to give us the time to rearm so considering how small and weak our armed forces are after 40 years of sustained cuts by all governments Trident and its replacement are in reality our only real defence and guarantee of freedom no matter what we are told by special interests.

Clearly terrorists are trying, which is a damn good reason to stop their production to begin with.

And I wouldnt hope that global disarmament happened because Trident went down. Of course not. Too many superpowers hate each other and rely on the media to make sure we mirror their feelings without knowing the real reasons why. We're all somebody else's enemy.

I'm humble enough to point out that I'm being idealistic here and not 100% lol.

Once the oil runs out, though, democracy goes out the window and colonialism returns. You'd see then what countries got wiped off the map before the big landgrab.

The future really does rely on us not having nuclear weapons.

Admittedly only picking out one point from your comment, if your anxiety over oil running out and land grabs, wouldn't a nuclear deterrent be a good idea?

Stopping the production of nuclear weapons isn't as simple as simply stopping. It's not like a tap you can turn off.

Again, it all hinges on everyone agreeing. And they won't. Ever.

As you so rightly say, everyone is someone's enemy.

If everyone agreed to get rid of nuclear weapons, someone would come up with something equally abhorrent to take its place, just to have the upper hand.

"The future really does rely on us not having nuclear weapons."

Really, how did that work out for the Ukraine?

At the time of the breakup of the Soviet Union Ukraine had the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal in the world. They agreed to give it up on condition their borders were guaranteed by the UN and this was duly done by the Budapest Memorandums on Security Assurances, 1994 with the USA, Russia and the UK signing as guarantors.

The Ukraine then became the first (and only country so far) to give up nuclear weapons. I think that if Ukraine had not given up those weapons Russia would never have risked a Ukrainian land-grab!

Oh no don't get me wrong, I'm not anxious. If I survived the end of the world tomorrow, whether that happened by ecology or nuclear war, I'd weigh the losses with the gains (certain losses probably being the only gains lol) and move on the best I could.

I wouldn't mind having to kill raiders and looters, but any country that came along would be more than welcome, because that country would bring wealth, especially if it expected cooperation.

I'd have no respect or trust for any political power, so therefore I'd just leech off them for ruining everything. I have faith in my ability to self-preserve and to back up my exit strategy

Of course, as you say, one thing replaces another, so it's probably best that we all just die out and give the planet another chance.

Maybe the penguins will get it right!

What no one has mentioned yet but is at the heart of the argument is, what would be the outcome if we scrapped our nuclear deterrent? The purpose of trident is to enable our government to make threats to rogue and unfriendly nations who wish us harm. You cannot threaten anyone if you haven't the ability to carry it out if your bluff us called. Right now there's one submarine fully armed with enough nuclear missiles to devastate the planet out at sea, and three others who can be at sea within 3 hours, and no one knows where that one armed sub is. And because no one knows where it is no one is prepared to attack the UK, because they know the response will be so disproportionate to the threat they pose that they'll lose more than they gain. The only country in recent history to unilaterally disarmed themselves and destroy their nuclear weapons is the Ukraine, and within a year of that being done and verified by the UN they were invaded by Russian troops. It's not a coincidence, Putin knew the possible retaliation if he'd invaded whilst they were a nuclear power so he left them alone.

The obvious answer is a decent anti-ICBM system similar to Israels Iron curtain program. The reality is that this would cost almost as much though.

For what its worth, if anyone actually launched modern nukes its pretty much game over for the human race anyway.

Yes it is. We all have missiles programmed to take out any target's factions, those who would fire on us in response to us exchanging with another country.

One Tsar Bomba could eradicate about a fifth of England alone, but if you didn't get one or two of those, it'd more likely be a few dozen low radiatin-high yield warheads.

My husband works on a nuclear submarine and you know nothing about what he actually does to keep our country safe...neither do I as its classified. But let me assure you its a deterrent, if we were to lose our capability to fight back its a green light to all the countries that want to irradicate us. You wouldn't like to be in a guns at dawn situation with nothing better than a nerf gun, as the other side would no doubt kill you. "The future really does rely on us not having nuclear weapons.

I think that if Ukraine had not given up those weapons Russia would never have risked a Ukrainian land-grab!"

You mean the only country who's given them up since south Africa did in 1989?

Let's face facts, Russia had the nuclear arsenal that was based in the Ukraine which was formally in the ussr and then when the USSR broke up the Ukraine had to hand back the nuclear arsenal to Russia because we couldn't afford the piss poor Ukraine not to sell them off to crazy half wit despots...

Something we let Russia probably do when we left them to go bankrupt in the 90s after spending trillions fighting them in a cold war for 40 fucking years...

It's a big game and I don't buy their bullshit... Even when it's on radio 4

But let me assure you its a deterrent, if we were to lose our capability to fight back its a green light to all the countries that want to irradicate us. You wouldn't like to be in a guns at dawn situation with nothing better than a nerf gun, as the other side would no doubt kill you. Without the inside knowledge if what trident actually does its a making a statement without knowing all the facts. I'm all for our service men keeping us from being blown to tiny pieces!!"

Totally agree, been involved in this area myself scrapping trident would be a terrible decision for this country both in terms of defence and also the economy

"That's about as true as saying the Ukraine had nuclear weapons!"

Really?

When the USSR disintegrated Ukraine inherited the nuclear arsenal based in it's territory. That was 100+ SS19 MRV ICBM's, each with 6 25MT yield warheads (that had been tested and on proven delivery system). That is a total of 600+ warheads that could be launched in under 1 hour! Plus they had aircraft launched and artillery tactical battlefield ordnance.I believe there is a list of exactly what they had in the Budapest Accord.

Now please just explain to a dunderhead like me how having an arsenal of that size is the same as having an unproven 'capability' to produce a weapon...

I am agog with anticipation!

I'm going to have to sit on the fene her and say I'm really not sure.

As long as we have close (proximity) allies who have nuclear capability I'm not sure it's necessary - nuclear weapons are a deterrent rather than an offensive option.

The world could live without another nuke and I don't think as a nation we'd lose any power.

. firstly I suggest you check out wikipedia and look at south Africa's nuclear weapons programme which lasted nearly 30 years and was scrapped in 89.. And secondly as I pointed out to you and you now except the Ukraine inherited the nuclear arms from the USSR, they never really developed them to give them up in the first place, it was more a fluke from the Ukraine's geographical location!

And thirdly there's no way in the fucking world there'd have got to keep them regardless, Russia certainly didn't force them into the treaty of removal they were forced to because there'd have sold them to any dickhead going!.

Now as for putins Willy nilly invasion of the Ukraine... Firstly Russia lent the Ukraine's billions which they failed to pay back then they gave them billions in gas which they refused to pay for and then the western installed leader of the Ukraine said fuck you Russia were gonna join the eu and NATO... To which Mr Putin then decided... No your fucking not, the Russian natives of east Ukraine of which are the majority were being shot at by Ukrainian forces, he annexed Crimea because the Russian southern fleet is based there!! I mean imagine Hawaii trying for freedom?, it's not a land grab but a strategic location where Russian pipelines of gas flow to Europe, which the Ukraine have constantly been trying to sabotage and disrupt and to be quite honest, if the west had kept there nosey beak out of the whole friggin mess, I doubt any of this would have got this far!...in reality the ussr ceded about half a million sq miles of land only to watch 400,000 sq miles of it go to the rival power of the EU!!!!

Last time I looked the yanks acted exactly the same when the Russians pretty much did the same in cuba...

So no I don't think Russia would invade the uk if we didn't have nuclear missiles and I don't think he'd "nuke" us for just the hell of it... I think people who think that have been reading to much boys own bullshit and the propaganda has gone to their head!.

I'm not defending Russia quite frankly they act like tits at times but so does everyone else.. honestly this rabid anti Russian bollocks that's spewed fourth around the internet is nuts and has no logic or bearing in reality!

I'm not anti nuclear weapons perse but I've yet to find a credible possible threat to the united kingdom they defend against! And in reality all they actually do is take up a massive section of the military budget that really does leave us with holes in the defences!.

I'm not really a big beliver in ww3 type scenarios,I think we've got big problems on the horizon with climate change and resource depletion.... On that basis I'd rather we start getting rid of nuclear weapons and actually start tackling the massive problems facing the world in the next few decades...

Take nuclear power stations there's over 400 reactors and alot of them are based near the sea for obvious reasons, if the models for climate change are remotely reliable, we really need to start reinforcing there defences really quickly because logistically even if we started decommissioning them today, well that could take a 150 years there!...

Basically, 10 former FCO, MoD and armed forces personnel are sat around a table, discussing the response to a hypothetical annexation of Latvia and Lithuania by Russia, in a Ukraine Crimea-type scenario. It's all unscripted and uses actors and archive footage to illustrate the various stages of progression of such a scenario, leading all the way up to a finger on the red button situation.

The thought processes, explanations and excuses and how nonchalantly some of the members discuss such things as the difference between 10000 casualties and 10 million is quite... Thought provoking.

"IPoverty in the UK? Very rare. Unfortunately the numbers you hear are based on an eu measure of poverty which is relative to where you live. In other words you can have sky tv, a pc, smart phones and what not and still be classed as in poverty.

I've said similar and been ripped to pieces. I asked that poverty be described. Got blocked and all sorts

Absolute poverty exists in the UK. This is fact.

Our relative wealth, globally speaking, means in my mind that poverty is something we should be ashamed of.

Just as in poor societies, wealth is something to be ashamed of.

Wealth is not something to be ashamed of, ever, in any situation. And I'm poor "

I wouldn't say that a person should be ashamed of wealth 'rags to riches' stories are always nice to hear, especially if you have a regular hard working person make a breakthrough one way or another. What is to be ashamed of is if the acquisition of your wealth is through immoral means, or by exploiting other human beings an the environment with little regard for the direct and knock on effects.

I find it interesting that you didn't expect there lack of empathy, in reality most high up military see it like chess!.

It's an opening move counted by an opposing move where the object of the game is not to win but not to be check mated!.

In reality military power has ever held onto opposing home forces regardless of the superiority.

The US couldn't do it in Vietnam

The Russians couldnt do it with Afghanistan.

The British had the attitude of conquer and then hold through installed dictatorship, you can drag that out longer but even that has a time limit on it.

In reality you'd have to ask why Russia sought to annex Latvia and Lithuania, what's in it for them?.

I was under the impression that Russia began to annex across Eastern Europe to solve the crisis of their economy after WWII, which left them with practically zero industry but military. Their tactics in destabilising societies, oddly enough, can be seen in Western society today, working back to the more brutal feminism movements of the late sixties onwards, which resembled how internet trolls work today long before its conception.

No Russia simply annexed a long list of countries between itself and Germany including half of Germany because Churchill and Roosevelt stabbed Stalin in the back on their promise to dismantle the German empire which had twice invaded Russia and was hell bent on driving the Bolsheviks into the dust.

If you ask most Germans about ww2 they belived they were fighting against the Bolsheviks and communist rule... They were like two fighting dogs who couldn't stand the sight of each other!..

Hence why Russia built the defensive line in eastern Europe instead of western Russia!

But their circumstances were as I said nonetheless and annexing those countries did the trick until they got too big for their own boots in Afghanistan and such.

.

No actually it was really the opposite, holding eastern Europe drained them off resources, cash and man power.

Russia is probably one of very few countries with all the resources it needs to be self sustaining or at least to a point!.

Holding places like Romania,Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia were a really big drain!.

Afghanistan was there new defensive line against the Muslims from the south, one that the US had a big hand in pushing to be honest.

Russia has been the UK,s biggest and best allie historically, we left them to it and they left us to it and we got together to fight common enemies like Napoleon and Hitler

to be fair, what the ussr didn't annexe in europe, the americans, british and french did annexe. tis why we ended up with groups like the red brigade in italy, the red army faction in west germany, the CCC in belgium, N17 in greece etc etc .... all of them fighting against what was intrinsically seen by them as the foreign imperialist occupation of western europe and they weren't far wrong.

"Nope, I'd rather live under Russian rule than cause nuclear havoc for the rest of the earth's population."

This is genuinely refreshing to hear. And lets face it, most long term occupations fail. I doubt a Russian occupation would last for long in any country.

In addition this is what my line of though keeps coming back to - no leader, bar perhaps the leader of a terrorist group, would fire a nuclear weapon knowing that:

a). If not the targeted nation, one of their allies could retaliate.

b). Due to the earth's climate system any nuclear fallout would eventually impact their own country.

Your quite right in your analysis, one of the slightly overlooked parts of ww2 was the Greek civil war that developed afterwards and the role the west played in fighting there very recent ally

"Does anyone actually know how much 1 billion actually is?

Why?"

I'm more than a little dubious with your figures, inflated more than a little I'm thinking.

Although the actual amount is disgusting.

We would be better spending the money in other more needy areas.

We should let other countries spend that disgusting amount of money on nuclear defences.

Then when it comes to the crunch,

just hide behind them, and be grateful they spent the disgusting amount of money on nuclear defences.

Taking no responsibility,is definitely the cheaper option.

"Why are people relying on food banks ?. Most people are eligible for income support so why are they using food banks?"

Income support relies on there being income to begin with. Redundancies in industry and lack of industry altogether can leave hundreds of thousands per region out of work.

Then you have the system that doesn't allow one partner to claim because their other partner is working, regardless of how little they have.

Then you have the self-employed who are not elligible for welfare.

Then you have/had that bedroom tax which put strain on homeowners.

Then you have ATOS kicking the terminally ill out of their wheelchairs and deathbeds and declaring the mentally ill fit for work.

Then you have the children, over 1 million of which are BELOW the poverty line.

Sorry, don't mean to come across as snarky. This is close to my feelings.

I was rejected from ATOS in 2012 on false grounds because my condition (primary depression and anxiety, linked to congenital hypothyroidism) didn't stop me from being able to do a physical. To bypass the actual problem, they struck my medical records from their report and then the DWP kept refusing and losing my sick notes and medical evidence. It took an MP just to get me backpaid for waiting because they even refused to help me while I was waiting half a year just to be screwed over.

I had no money already. I was desperate, having had to leave a job that couldn't support me after years of grinding through depression and suicidal urges and heartbreak, identity crises, paranoia and loneliness. I'd taken a gamble trying to pull myself together and failed, because mental illness.

Simply because mental illness...

I was reclusive, suicidal and speaking gibberish for most of that year.

I've clawed my way back slowly to a less extreme level of poverty since then and for the past two years without financial help, because I literally couldn't play their games anymore.

My winter clothes still make me look homeless, my shoes all have worn down and I learnt to cut my own hair because even the barber became a luxury.

I haven't lived in four years. I've barely existed. I had no support.

Trust me, when I talk about poverty, i talk about more than just a lack of money to hand. I talk about living so cheap because I'm afraid I might have no options left tomorrow.

When I was at school I was bullied by a bigger, older more senior kid.

I tried to avoid him but he always seemed to find me.

It went on for almost a year.

Eventually I reported him to the teaching staff, who told him off.

That made the bullying worse.

One day, at the end of my limit, I smashed his face with a spade.

He stopped bullying me after that.

I wish I'd had the spade day 1.

How did the bedroom tax put strain on homeowners? The whole point of the bedroom tax is it's council tenants, not people who've bought their house or have to pay private rents like most people do even when they can hardly afford it.

It's a very interesting analogy..

Do you wish you'd nuked him, Instead of hitting him with a spade?.

I suspect your love of nuclear weapons comes from your own childhood experiences and not any reality in what the world faces?.

I think it's very interesting when we challenge own beliefs and where those beliefs evolve from!"

You missed my point. Probably deliberately, I "suspect" you're "that kind of a person". The spade was my nuke.

I don't love nuclear weapons.

Your right, it is interesting when we challenge our own beliefs. I'm always happy to listen to an alternative view and move my position if required. Unlike some.......

You suspect wrong. But thank you for the psyche evaluation.

"Yes we should replace trident, with something much bigger and meaner like Donald Trump!

Would be cheaper now too

Lol we have a Katie Hopkins. It's not big or clever but it's very very loud and hideous to look at..."

I would look at a trident missile any day over looking at her.

Personally I am all for keeping them, as many have stated the threat of using them is sometimes called for.

Apology accepted.

I appreciate that sometimes it's possible to miss a specific reference as it's easier and more comfortable than saying "I see your point and understand what you mean."

We're all grown ups, we don't have to agree on everything.

You're right about our childhood experiences shaping us. In this instance the bullying experience has no bearing on my views on a nuclear deterrent.

Technically you did have the spade day 1, the bullying only stopped once you actually used it.

Just like the presence of nuclear weapons hasn't actually stopped many of the 'proxy' wars of the last 70 years.

OP: Personally, while I can see the arguments for and against, I don't see why we don't just pretend we've replaced it, I mean who actually checks? And we know we will never actually use it.

Poverty in the UK? Very rare. Unfortunately the numbers you hear are based on an eu measure of poverty which is relative to where you live. In other words you can have sky tv, a pc, smart phones and what not and still be classed as in poverty. . A good post .. If you can afford all of these , you are not even close to being in poverty .

and yet every day you see on the news, thousands of Asylum seekers at the borders, most with mobile phones in hand, where do they get the mobile phones, where do they charge them up? shouldn't they swap the phone for food?"

I see what you are saying but how would that work.

Firstly they have to be accepted into society, secondly they somehow have to workout what the phone is worth in order to acquire money to buy said food - and then, that money might not support them for long.

But I think there is a big point here - if you fled a country due to being persecuted, and you have got separated from family. Surely one of the biggest reasons to keep the phone is to remain in contact with say you wife, or mother, I am not being funny but I'd consider it inhumane if someone was told "sell your method of communication with your family because people think you shouldn't have a phone if you are an asylum seeker - even though back in Syria you were a regular hard working person for all hey know."

Yeah i's funny you say that - my mother has been an NHS nurse since she was 22, my dad has never been out of work bar 6 months after his mother and father divorced. I am perusing a PhD whilst working part time, and my sister got degree in Chemistry last year, yet she is stacking shelves because that is all there is.

So my point is this - it is luck of the draw half the time as to whether you get a 'good' job, or just a job. There are that many people out of work and very few skill specific jobs outside of the South which means if you go for a general job, as my sister found out, your CV and cover letter is a needle in the hay stack.

So don't you dare say work requires good skills and hard work, when you are not a young individual having to find their first 'career' job. There are plenty of people with good degree or skill qualifications working hard, stacking shelves and hanging clothes because that is all there is.

I love the way some people point out the failings of something that wasn't said.

Lost and blind.

you may not have written the words pride or proud but it's pretty clear from the timbre of how you wrote your piece and your use of the emoticon at the end to signify an innocent rouge/cheeky chappy type attitude that indicates you intended to infer a certain amount of pride in the way that you used gross violence with a weapon against another person.

"When I was at school I was bullied by a bigger, older more senior kid.

I tried to avoid him but he always seemed to find me.

It went on for almost a year.

Eventually I reported him to the teaching staff, who told him off.

That made the bullying worse.

One day, at the end of my limit, I smashed his face with a spade.

He stopped bullying me after that.

I wish I'd had the spade day 1. .

It's a very interesting analogy..

Do you wish you'd nuked him, Instead of hitting him with a spade?.

I suspect your love of nuclear weapons comes from your own childhood experiences and not any reality in what the world faces?.

I think it's very interesting when we challenge own beliefs and where those beliefs evolve from!

But thank you for the psyche evaluation.

.

Sorry that was badly worded,I wasn't actually tying to have a pop at you, I think most people have been bullied to some extent or another, so we all have a knowledge of how it feels, I was trying to make a genuine point about childhood experiences reflecting our adult beliefs and reality's!

i dunno but i think what he's trying to get across is that britain is long over due for a smack in the face with a shovel for being such a consumate bully on the global stage

I'm very fortunate as i don't need to think about what I meant. I and you both know very well what was meant.

Nice try......

joking aside i haven't a clue what relevance there is betwixt trident and your anecdote regarding your unfortunate bullying episode at school.

Give it time. I'm sure you'll work it out.

dunno .... it affected you so much you decided to become a copper so you could have revenge and bully folks yourself ..... i'm lost

Only 25 more comments to go, let's hope you find yourself before then or you'll never know.

And that would be dreadful........

I've just reviewed the bullying post to be certain before responding.

There is no emoticon used anywhere.

Well done.

My bickering?????????? Twas you who attacked my post. I'll use that emoji now.

Rather that concede your erroneous comment you'd like to argue about something else?

No thanks, I have a "don't feed the trolls" policy.

I said I want anti nuckes perse..

I just haven't yet seen a credible enemy that it defends against and in reality through its big budget causes a bigger hole in the military defences.

I mean you can do an awful lot with 50,000 million pounds

I knew someone would, happy to do so.

I was near the school garden when my nemesis appeared. He'd spotted me and I was attempting to hide. The spade was convenient.

It hadn't been before.

Unfortunately, as the future submarine project has been running for about 8 years already, the cost of pulling out would be quite high. AWE has been ramping up its operations for 2-3 years emoting the skills needed to retool the trident warheads for the new weapon.

I believe I see your point.

Actually it was a fortunare/unfortunate accident that I found it. The garden was the one place I'd never hidden before.

So yes, it was always available, I just didn't know it. Even if I'd known I truly doubt I'd ever have used it in a cold calculated way.

It was pure fear and desperation that took me to that point.

What this story about the spade nicely illustrates is the pointlessness of Trident as a deterrent.

As pointed out, the spade was always there, it just didn't stop anyone getting bullied because the bullies didn't know if it would get used or not.

The spade only worked as a deterrent after it was used.

So we are to understand that Trident is pointless as a deterrent because unless you are willing to destroy modern civilisation in a fiery Armageddon, guaranteeing the deaths of untold millions of your own citizens in retaliation strikes as well as the millions of civilians living in the country of your aggressor, the weapon has no use.

An unexpectedly good analogy!

You would have been better off just trying to say that without bringing in an analogy about a spade that didn't fit what you wanted to say at all.

I suspect the bullies didn't know the spade was there either, or they would have used it to great effect.

Now, if everyone knew there were spades available and everyone knew that everyone had one........

"Does anyone actually know how much 1 billion actually is?

Why?"

I would not leave my house unlocked. The same principle applies to defence

I think we can all agree that this thread has proved that Trident is a stupid idea, and suggesting it is a reasonable deterrent is as daft as implying that the best way for children to settle their differences is by hitting each other in the face with spades.

"An unexpectedly good analogy! "

That's what I thought too

Personally I feel we did need Polaris, we possibly needed Trident, we might need it's replacement, but at some point in the future we will decide our money is better spent elsewhere (farm implements for developing countries?). What I can't understand is why our politicians can't have a sensible debate without twisting it into either Nutty Nats or the Looney Left.
