So as part of my New Years Resolutions I thought I should do some things for others rather than concentrate on myself.
I signed up to give blood and had a call yesterday to say I could have an appointment today.
Anyone got any ideas how long it takes to get the prescribed amount out of your body? I might be wrong but I understand they look to take a pint. Would have thought that would take a while? |

It depends on your body. It took me a while when I donated. Plus I had blood sugar issues so they made me stay before and after to eat/drink. Ended up being there over an hour total.

"I'm curious if you've satisfied your bi curiousity... if you have you shouldn't be giving blood. Sadly that's the way the rules of blood donation work. "
I think the rules have been changed recently. They were considering it. |

You mustn't give blood if:
You are a man who, in the last 12 months has had oral or anal sex with another man (even if you used a condom or other protective).
However they also say women mustn't give blood for 12 months after having sex with a man who has ever had oral or anal sex with another man, even if they used a condom or other protective. But there are exceptions, so please check.

As per the above, it used to be you couldn't full stop but now you must not in instances where you have had sexual contact with men in past 12 months.
Thank you for the heads up concerning how long it takes. Sure 15 minutes will feel like a lifetime |

It's usually 5-10 minutes for the actual blood donation - 470ml is the norm - but with the pre and post stuff included you should schedule an hour.
Last time I went to give blood they refused to take it as I had recently been on a trip to a certain part of Africa. They're very careful, and rightly so.
Btw, I didn't have sex in Africa (well, except with myself). |

I meant 15-30 for the actual blood draining. You may need to have blood tests before hand, or there may be a queue, or you may feel faint and be kept afterwards. |

Once the needle is in, you don't feel it. It's no big deal at all. Just relax, open and close the hand of the arm they're taking from, and the time passes really fast. |

I used to give blood and plasma regularly and just before I was due to receive my gold badge they told me because I had had an operation (over 20 years earlier!) I was not able to give any more. Has that ruling changed does anyone know? |

Were you given blood or plasma, and was it after 1980? |

it's people like you who helped save me (Tone). and because of that, a newborn baby eventually got to meet her mum once I had my life saving surgery and countless blood transfusions. |

Only about 5 minutes for me but that's apparently quite fast. Maybe 15ish on average. Most of my appointments are taken up with filling in forms and having a biscuit. |

Same here, I don't think it's ever taken more than 10 for me. I know my mum had to stop trying to donate for a while because if they can't take it within a certain time frame it's unlikely to get to the right volume. |

That was the reason I stopped, I knew the nurse she was a friend of my mother and I felt uncomfortable telling her I like to play hide the sausage with men!!!
Didn't word it like that though |

I was giving blood (every 2 months) and plasma (every 7 weeks) and I had my op in 1988 Didn't have a problem donating until mid to late 90s when told I couldn't any longer. |

Sounds like just the era that HIV was a massive thing and they were doing a major rehaul in the donating blood criteria |

I think that rule is related to CJD, although it could be to do with HIV too. I'm not sure. |

It was CJD.
I'm in the same boat. Had several major operations in the mid 80's and effectively had a full blood change plus some.
Full respect for everyone who can and does donate |

I rarely managed to give a pint in the allotted time and after one very ropey day where I passed out in the bank afterwards I gave up on trying.
Now they won't take mine anymore anyway so I'm absolved from trying.
But having been in receipt of a lot of medical help (though not blood products) I do try to motivate others to donate blood, to sign up for organ donation and discuss it with your next of kin and to go on the bone marrow register - the one thing I can still donate, possibly. |
