It does sound silly when you read it sometimes but it's actually a warning about the risk of cross-contamination with other nuts as well as it containing peanuts. I.e. someone may not be able to eat a different nut but be ok with peanuts but during the production stage there may be a risk of contact with the others.
The joys of the wonderful food safety laws in this country. I have spent many hours reading the back of packets in supermarkets each week for the last 10 years |

Also.... Peanuts are not nuts, they're actually a type of bean.
The packaging could actually say "May or May Not Contain Nuts" and still be accurate. |

And for those wondering how you can be allergic to peanuts, when they're not nuts, it's because they have the same, or very similar, protein make-up as proper nuts. |

You know, I never knew they weren't actually a nut, I've learnt something new today |

Nuts are defined as a simple, dry fruit with one seed (very occasionally two) in which the seed case wall becomes very hard at maturity. True nuts include pecan, sweet chestnut, beech, acorns, hazel, hornbeam and alder.
Peanuts, Brazil nuts, coconuts, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews, horse chestnuts and pine nuts are not nuts. So the health warning on a packet of peanuts (“may contain nuts”) is, strictly speaking, untrue.
So peanuts, also known as groundnuts, earthnuts, goobers, pinders, Manila nuts and monkey nuts, aren’t nuts: they are a type of pea which grows underground. They are native to South America but now widely cultivated, notably in Georgia, in the United States. Some people are so severely allergic to peanuts that eating a tiny amount can be fatal; but these people may not be allergic to true nuts. |

"Customers are without common sense and intelligence and so these warnings are needed to protect the retailer/supplier."
I disagree with that in one way I have a lot of common sense and intellect, yes it's it's protection thing, but for those with allergies it's a quick way to see if it contains or may contain an ingredient. Believe me, when a weekly shop takes you 3 hours to do because you have to check every packet, your grateful for these warnings as it's a quick reference rather than having to read every single ingredient on every single packet you pick up. |

It refers more to ridiculously obvious cases mentioned above e.g bag of nuts - "may contain nuts" |

But as I have found out as above peanuts aren't actually a nut and it refers to other nuts which may be a risk of cross-contamination in the production line, so not ridiculous. |

Peanut allergy is a type of food allergy due to peanuts. It is different from nut allergies. Physical symptoms of allergic reaction can include itchiness, urticaria, swelling, eczema, sneezing, asthma, abdominal pain, drop in blood pressure, diarrhea and cardiac arrest. Anaphylaxis may occur. A epi pen shot is required immediately as death can occur very quickly. know of a young girl that died in a city centre street after eating satay in a chinese restaurant. |

Yes it is a protection thing but has very little to do with protecting consumers.
It's much more about protecting manufacturers and retailers from ambulance chasing lawyers. |

Companies can't take the risk nowadays like years ago because of the culture to take legal action.
I was on a flight last year and the captain asked prior to take of if anyone had any nut products on the flight could they please refrain from eating them onboard the aircraft, he also said that snacks with nut products would not be sold due to a severe allergy a child on board the flight had.
Thank god everyone was respectful! Dread to think what might have happened otherwise.
It's a huge hastle having such allergies weather nuts or other things to be honest

I have a peanut allergy. Last week at a club, I was getting on extremely well with a certain sexy lady. After kissing for a while, my lips kept tingling. I went to look on the mirror to my surprise my lips looked like Pete Burns !!! Not an attractive look! X |

"Unfortunately it's all going a bit American with all this 'where there's a blame, there's a claim' philosophy developing over here. It's all part of the 'legislating for idiots' practice."
Exactly what I said - have to make allowances for the fact customers are stupid |

I know that, but this thread is about nuts. There are 14 listed food allergens... including eggs, fish, nuts, peanuts, cereals containing gluten, and celery... |
