I guess we have to keep the next generation educated and informed about that. That's the MOST HORRIBLE thing that man ever visited on his fellow man. |

I can see his point why remember something that was a devastating and a disgusting tragedy towards humanity! It's a massive part of our history and generations now and to come should know what happened. My point is a person saves 50 kids from a burning down school and is remembered for a few moths at best a person goes into a school and kills 50 kids is remembered for a life time. Seems wrong to me. |

Maybe, if we can focus on the positives rather than the negatives then it would be a much happier world. Sadly its not how it works in our modern world.
We need to remember lest it happen again, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it |

If I said have you heard of Tommy Makay you wouldn't have a clue this man saved a family from a burning tower block in London, but if I said Peter sucliffe you would know instantly who I was referring too. |

We remember the WW2 genocide, (and I think quite correctly) but personally I know very little about other fairly recent genocides, (eg Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda). Should they be remembered as well? |

I don't think having a day to remember the victims is a bad thing, I just don't hold out any hope of it changing ANYTHING.
I mean even the Jews themselves today are trying to eliminate the Palestinians and the Palestinians the Jews!.... It's a crazy fucked up world |

holocaust memorial day isn't only to remember the millions killed by the nazis - it's to remember all genocides including Rwanda Cambodia Bosnia Darfur etc. |

It's not just the atrocities of WW2, modern genocide plays a part and is why Holocaust memorial day became holocaust memorial week a few years ago.

Actually the holocaust itself was not just about Jews, yes Jews made up the bulk of the numbers of those who perished, and yes the Nazi persecution of the Jews is the story most told, deservedly so too, but the holocaust claimed many other non jewish victims, the next highest proportion of victims were Gay men, who were forced to wear an inverted PINK triangle on the clothes the Nazi's made them wear before they were executed.
By making Holocaust memorial day a week long event (holocaust memorial week) it means all holocausts can be remembered at the same time, there is still THE holocaust memorial day, today, so why should the name for the week long event change?
If we remembered every holocaust separately then we'd need to extend the week long event by about 4 months! |
