Without going away from the US military I would have to say you can take your pick from:

Platoon

Good Morning Vietnam

Full Metal Jacket

or stepping away slightly from the 'How great is the USA' type film you could have:

Born on the 4th of July

The Killing Fields

If you want action adventure/ sifi, take your pick from:

Raider of The Lost Ark (all 3)

Terminator

Blade Runner

Aliens

Labyrinth

Batman

Diehard

If you want comedy there is always:

Spinal Tap

Beetlejuice

Caddyshack

Then in the horror section (not my fave) so only 1 here:

Poltergeist

Of course you could pick family fave E.T.

I would suggest all the above 80's films are much better than Top Gun.

When I flew to America in 1986 we watched Top Gun on the way back, I much preferred Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which we saw on the way there.

Mmmmm Bom Bom, Chicka Chicka

Where men are men, and sheep are nervous...!

I cringe if I have to watch Top Gun now...

Being a bit of (well, a LOT of) a cinema snob, my all time favourite film is from the mid 80's, but most people reading this will never have heard of it.

Heimat. German film by Edgar Reitz - 16 hours long and all subtitled!
