"I've put petrol in my diesel car "
How much petrol ?
If youve put £10 or so fill it with diesel and its fine
If you filled it then your in trouble, no damage usually but will have to drain it. Do not drive it. |

Oh dear Tank will have to be drained (most have anti syphon traps these days preventing you from syphoning out yourself - into suitable containers of course), but being a diesel, there's a good chance no harm done, except to your finances. |

In the states, the nozzles at the pump are 2 different sizes. And the fuel necks on the vehicles fit exactly, so its hard to fuel one with the other.

This. Fill the tank if there's not much in it and it'll be fine. |

Just noticed your post.
Had I seen it earlier I'd have given you a hand. You're only a few miles away from me. Assuming you're near home of course.
From the department of almost useless information. |

The issue with petrol in a diesel tank is that the close tolerances in the pressure pump if it is common rail or the injection pump if it is not. Then there are the close critical tolerances in the injectors. The diesel is self lubricating whereas the petrol will was off all lubrication and has not lubricating effort and will rapidly wear components, might even seize them.
Then there is the unburnt petrol which will wash past the piston rings and remove the oil which lubricate the piston cylinder interface. This petrol will then thin your oil in the sump and make it potentially explosive! |

"Compression ignition... Kaaboom " .
Diesels work on very high compression to ignite the fuel, because diesel err well doesn't ignite very easily.
You put petrol in and it ignites waaay to early.

"Do you have A A membership or similar? Most do fuel draining as part of their services."
As far as I know, the AA now charge for it.
The only one I know with wrong fuel cover is, I think, Green Flag.
Some insurance companies offer it included with or as an optional extra to policies. Axa does, if I remember correctly. |

The helpful red light came on to remind me hence tank empty and I filled it to the top. Pulled out of the station stopped at a red light probably 200 yards and it conked out.
My lovely friend has sorted it and says they do something with new cars (got all techy) so won't be any damage, drained all the petrol and replaced with diesel.
50 quid for petrol 50 for friend and 50 for diesel which to be fair I would have spent anyway. Therefore 100 quid lapse in judgement not to bad really.

The worse thing about near neat petrol in a diesel is, it's a solvent, pretty terrible once it's got into your pump!.
I'd double check before driving off |

Absolutely right.. petrol in a diesel will strip the engine e linings, fuck the turbo, and could fuck your finances. Diesel, as it's heavier than petrol, will sit at the bottom of the tank and will drain easier,... and a lot less likely to bugger the engine up. |
