I can't understand so much men vs. women stuff on a site designed primarily for us to contact and meet each other. It boggles my brain.

I guess some people really don't see casual sexism or really do think it's not harmful and is a joke.

We're here to try to meet each other and yet can't help but disrespect and put each other down, as an entire group.

Why is being disrespectful about each other funny though?

Perpetuating these jokes just continues to confirm stereotypes that do harm to both men and women, (though mostly women, particularly in this case).

The first quote, whilst very clever, does refer to women in terms of property and we take these things in subconsciously unless we actually think about them and question them. They influence our thoughts and actions.

We accept it's ok, and funny, to regard women as property.

Women have historically been property, and often still are treated that way even today. We should be acting to change that, not laughing about it and making jokes.

Some of the guys were quick enough to protest when they noticed men are sometimes portrayed as bungling dolts on adverts.

These stereotypes are harmful, not light-hearted or funny, regardless of the OP's intentions, (which were clearly not malicious).

I like Englishman irishman scottishman jokes.

I don't dislike the irish.

I quite like in law jokes...I don't dislike inlaws.

There are loads of jokes involving men and I don't dislike men.

There are jokes involving women and I quite like women as it goes.

its just jokes.

don't make us live in a shit world where we can't tell a joke without sitting down and working out who it may or may not offend.

there's a world of difference between telling a joke and having a go.

There are jokes involving all kinds of groups that I don't dislike.

Still find the jokes funny though.

In the interest of balance.

Husband: "Want a quickie?"

Wife: "As opposed to what?"

My husband said he wanted more space.

So I locked him outside.

What do you do if your best friend runs off with your husband?

Miss her. Pity her.

Why are husbands like lawn mowers?

They're hard to get started, emit foul odors, and don't work half the time.

How do you keep your husband from reading your e-mail?

Rename the mail folder "Instruction Manuals."

The real reason people put on weight when married...

After a night out a single person goes to the fridge, there's nothing there they fancy so they go to bed.

Wasn't aimed directly at you. Are you a wife? I've been a wife and I'm not offended by any of it. Yeah sexism is still around but posts like this should be taken with a pinch of salt. Colgate isn't a prick and I know he didn't mean any of it maliciously. And he hasn't said that he thinks all of the stuff he posted, it's just for a laugh. A female comedian being self-depreciating and funny about women can often be really rather humorous AND on point.

A guy making the same jokes, would almost certainly come across as being a sexist dick.

Jokes about wives are a little different to jokes about women. Jokes about blonde women are a little different to jokes about women. It's picking specific, easy to joke about people.. Jokes about men being idiots are still funny even if men aren't idiots. I'm just saying that jokes are jokes and should be taken with a pinch of salt. Nothing in the OP is malicious..

"What some have failed to notice in their rush to find hate and abuse is that the men who made their comments/jokes in the opening post are actually taking the piss out of themselves because they have wives and love them and probably love women in general

Do you really think it's that deep? I thought they were taking the piss out of their wives? Do we need to re-read these quotes?

"Probably love women in general"*

*not all men.

Well if they really think wives/women are so bad why do they have them/put up with them? Who are they putting down exactly if not themselves?

"

The quotes clearly dig at the wives, rather than themselves.

I can't answer why sexist men marry women. Superiority complex? Dowry money? The need for a male heir? Who knows, it's such a long standing mystery.

The status of owning property (the wife. The term trophy wife highlights this one) and someone to look after the house and him and to provide children.

"Nice to see your sense of humour bypass wasn't a failure

I know, right?

I just love humour that says women are something to be endured and put up with. It's hilarious! I don't know why anyone wouldn't love that.

"

Very eloquent. If I'm chatting to someone and encounter sexism, I soon tell them. Some don't even realise the true meaning of what they've said!!

Why women would marry sexist men wasn't the question so no comment is being made about the women.

The reasons I gave are based on comments and behaviours observed, in real life, from sexist men.

I didn't comment on what I think of the women that marry them, in a derogatory fashion or otherwise.

Some women clearly do marry them though.

I'm not sure what your point is tbh.

Yes, real life does treat women the world over far worse than in the jokes - which is perhaps why some people are over the same old tired shit jokes made at the expense of women/wives who don't have a choice/have a very limited choice between sexist man a), b) or c).

How do you get a dog to stop humping your leg? Pick it up and give it a blow job.

"

They are funny. I also prefer to take this piss out myself and my sex than the other way round. I like self-deprecating humour

I do think that there is something in that.

A female comedian being self-depreciating and funny about women can often be really rather humorous AND on point.

A guy making the same jokes, would almost certainly come across as being a sexist dick.

By extension of this, had the OP been female and posted the same set of jokes, does that then make them self depreciating and humorous?

I would have probably still said something, but I most likely would have said something slightly different.

I still don't think it's great to perpetuate negative historical stereotypes about women and what a nag we all are.

Men don't really have the same historical oppression to make jokes about, so the jokes are obviously quite different.

I'm sorry wasp but the same historical oppression.

Really?

So men have never been sold into slavery?

Men have never been press ganged?

Men have never been oppressed?

I'm very sorry you can't make a sweeping statement like that.

Yes women have been oppressed, but so have both sexes. Usually by the rich, wealthy.

I am not going to tell you to lighten up coz it's clearly a very serious subject matter that you obviously feel strongly about.

Please do tell me some jokes about middle-class white men who have been sold into slavery or press-ganged.

I bet they're hilarious."

If there were I doubt they would be funny anyway.

But I am sure monty python has probably taken the piss at some point.

Besides we all know us men don't require jokes to make us look stupid, we do a pretty good job at it ourselves

all of them are allegedly genuine quotes from famous people, some I found humorous, some less so. No different to any other quip. "Why is being disrespectful about each other funny though?

These stereotypes are harmful, not light-hearted or funny, regardless of the OP's intentions, (which were clearly not malicious)."

Get a grip it was said in jest and there will be a husband equivalent out there some where. Sense of humour none existent in some people very unattractive trait I think.

"Would it not be equally the woman's fault for getting married to a sexist man ?

its getting to the stage on here that you would need to seek legal advice before posting on the forums !!

No, it isn't my fault if someone else is sexist, or racist, or anything, regardless of the relationship with each other.

I can't believe you would suggest it is a wives fault that her husband is sexist? You ever heard of an arranged marriage?

I have ye, and who says its always the bloke who wants to get married?

No-one on this thread has said it is always the bloke who wants to get married. Is it relevant to any point made so far?

What? You implied that a woman might have to get married to a sexist bloke through arranged marriage

(It's not an implication, it's a fact)

so it was relevant to that point.

Though what arranged marriage had to do with this thread I don't know

Well, lots has been brought into this thread, hasn't it? To explain the poor reception of the OP quotes.

Like, for example, how not funny a joke about treating women like property is, when women are still treated as property. "

The Op quotes have been received well by 90% of the people on this thread so I don't know where you get that from.

Anyway, haven't you got some dishes or cleaning up to be getting on with

I'm not suggesting it's the wife's fault that her husband is sexist, but she must of known this or at least had some idea of his traits before she agreed to marry him ,

Maybe she thought she could change him , I don't know

I'm sure men have been forced into marriage by arraignment as well , but for the most part I think partners enjoy a bit of slagging and banter with each other and there's no harm done !

Here's a few 'husbands are shit' jokes to hopefully redress the balance for the professionally offended.

Men, prepare to be massively offended!!

Husband: "Want a quickie?"

Wife: "As opposed to what?"

What do you do if your best friend runs off with your husband?

Miss her. Pity her.

Why are husbands like lawn mowers?

They're hard to get started, emit foul odors, and don't work half the time.

How do you keep your husband from reading your e-mail?

Rename the mail folder "Instruction Manual"

How can you tell if your husband is dead?

The sex is the same but you get to use the remote.

What do you call a woman who knows where her husband is every night?

A widow.

What is the difference between a wife and a girlfriend?

About 45 pounds.

What's the difference between a husband and a boyfriend?

45 minutes.

What's the difference between a new husband and a new dog?

1) After a year, the dog is still excited to see you.

2) A dog only takes a couple of months to train.

Why didn't the husband change the baby for a week?

Because the text on the diapers package said '18-40 lbs'

I think the only reason my husband likes to go fishing so much is that it's the only time he hears someone tell him, "Wow, that's a big one!"

Change the genders of those described in the comments.

Change the gender of the op.

There that's fixed it. Now no one can be offended, and it's all still humerous. Or not humerous unless you don't find it humerous of course.

For whatever reason.......

Next thread topic; politics.

It wouldn't be humourous though. Because those historical 'jokes' don't work when you substitute men into them.

I like how every time someone points out something is a bit dated, cunty or sexist everyone jumps up and down going "this is censorship! You can't censor me! How dare you be offended! Why are people so affronted by people finding something sexist and pointing it out?

You are either unwilling or unable to accept that there is more than one side to an issue and want everyone to see every issue the same as you and agree with your limited _iew of life.

I am not the one saying anyone should change their opinion on any subject. I am not the one saying that anybody should change any part of their lifestyle to fit in with me. I don't care, I don't want every place I visit in the world to be a sterile generic clone of the next place I visit. Actually, I have not said such things.

"Change the genders of those described in the comments.

Change the gender of the op.

There that's fixed it. Now no one can be offended, and it's all still humerous. Or not humerous unless you don't find it humerous of course.

For whatever reason.......

Next thread topic; politics.

It wouldn't be humourous though. Because those historical 'jokes' don't work when you substitute men into them."

I disagree. I don't see the difference. But then again I'm not reading the same things into them as you. (From whichever gender they're made specific to)

That doesn't make either of us right or wrong, just different.

This is getting way too serious.

I'm a woman who knows the difference between a joke and malicious intent. I have a sense of humour and know that most of the time, mildly sexist jokes are meant as a joke, not as offence.

Your mum is so fat she's on both sides of the family!

This is mildly offensive to people with fat mums. And I don't care

Lighten up people!!!

People I know couldn't give a shit about jokes levelled against them or others.

They will however not tolerate actual sexism/racism or whatever ism you care to mention...why? Because they have the common sense to differentiate between the two things.

Some people are able to run with a sense of humour and some look for petty little ways to be offended by it.

imagine the world if nobody could say anything for fear it might just offend someone somewhere!

How about some non-gender-specific marriage humour?

I'm not offended or trying to censor anyone. But people have as much right to point out that someone is posting shit sexist "jokes" reminiscent of the 1950s that they don't find funny, as they do to post them.

You may think this means I have no sense of humour; I may think it means you're a bit of a knob.

"How about some non-gender-specific marriage humour?

Oscar Wilde:

Now then, does this joke become offensive, less funny and an example of institutionalised sexism if it's reworded as

"Bigamy is having one husband too many. Monogamy is the same."

Or

Bigamy is having one wife too many. Monogamy is the same."?

What I have suggested is that if you find that opening post funny, you might want to reconsider your world _iew."

Why would they want to reconsider?

I've found that trying to pluck out nasal hair can be pretty tricky ...

especially if it wakes the wife up and she starts throwing punches!

"In the interest of balance.

And actually, none of those perpetuate harmful historical stereotypes nor do they suggest that women are just property to be traded between friends!

So much better - well done you!"

You can't see the stereotypes? Let me help....

Stereotype 1 - husbands don't last long enough to satisfy.

Stereotype 2 - husbands feel trapped inside their marriages.

Stereotype 3 - husbands bring women down.

Stereotype 4 - husbands are lazy, fart a lot, and have trouble getting it up.

Stereotype 5 - they can't be bothered to read instructions.

Showed the jokes to my husband, and he laughed... as did I at the wife ones.

All humour makes fun of someone or something....

I've yet to hear any jokes about men being sold into slavery or press ganged though.

They have been oppressed in some ways, yes, but it's not joked about."

I was so happy to hear that slaves are now free... my last one cost a fortune.

If the United States of America are the leaders of the free world, I think I'd like to be sold into slavery.

In the olden days you knew they were a slave, because they had a ring around their necks - now he has a ring on his finger.

Now you have.

Someone who thinks that anyone who doesn't share their sense of humour is a cunt obviously has issues that need professional help.

Me, I don't care what you think!

Have a nice evening

Or perhaps you just don't get my sense of humour...?? Because, as I said, it works both ways. Thanks for proving my point. I thought you were a misogynist based on what you found funny, you think I need "professional help" based on what I find funny. There's no difference.

you don't like my sense of humour and that makes me a cunt and now you are trying to claim it's a joke, like all jokes it's all in the context. I still don't care
