Ok, so imagine you were given the opportunity to go back and study something of your choice (and money and time weren't preventing it). What would you choose?
It can be either something practical, like learning how to fix cars or how to cook, or something impractical, like a PhD in philosophy.
Go on, what do you wish you could learn more about if you had to choose one thing?

I had exactly that choice a few months ago and I'm now doing maths and physics.
It's really hard work and I admit to struggling at times but I do enjoy it. Well most of the time....!! |

I've got a degree in philosophy but would have loved to have gone further with it. I'd also like to do a history degree, but focusing on what I don't know. Oh and I'd like to learn how to play an instrument.
I'd spend my life at uni if I could afford it |

I'd have loved to have studied history more. As it is, I have thousands of books the subject and devour anything on Napoleonic/American Civil wars that I can find, but I'm simply an enthusiastic amateur.
To be a dusty old history professor scaring the living daylights out of the next generation is a dream all too few can achieve |

so many to choose from, I have retired from computers so that degree is now void, would like to do an aprenticship in cabinet making, as wood is my current passion. Art and design degree would be good, would give me background knowledge but I think I would still experiment more than follow known rules.
and I would like a talent, failed miserably with guitar my fingers just don't fit, but maybe piano or something. |

I have recently been given this chance!
Something I've always wanted to do and my employer is going to be funding me I'm doing a 2 year degree and then a 3rd year which will be the masters. Providing I pass the 3rd year I will be one of only about 50 others in the uk qualified.
I'm so excited and till I got offered it was looking for a change of direction......
I start in September |

I've changed careers: Went to uni late (recently) and studied music then completed teacher training. I love my job and the freedom of working for an agency.
I'd learn:
To be a pilot- wings are good!
To become a barrister- to challenge cognition
Something to do with travel and culture exploration- more of that please!
xx

Pmsl uncontrollably, but surely there must have been a course at school to take when I was at school, bearing in mind I left in 1979 aged 17 and went straight into the building trade |

I'm a mum and work but also on university. I do like by acquiring a student loan. It's not a bad debt at all. You only ever pay it back once you're earning 21k or more per year. Then at 21k you're only paying back something little as £20 a week. After you're qualified in whatever subject you're earning 35k or above min!! So £20 a week is nothing. Also once you're 60 or 65 years old and still owe any money, your student debt is wiped off. They simply don't want you going into old age in debt. I'm half way to 60 already so I'm not worried about student loan debt lol!
Remember you're never too old to learn new skills! Good luck hunny. X |

Yes, so we should learn those languages instead of useless Latin with rude mean teachers who don't understand that not everyone can translate Virgil's Aeneid on the spot and that maybe some students are better at politics and math.

I did both of those, and Latin has probably been more useful in helping me work things out and understand the root of words. If you're going to just do a little bit of something (e.g. to GCSE level, not actual fluency level) I think a little bit of Latin is far more useful than a little bit of any other language. Obviously being completely fluent in a second modern language to your native tongue would be more helpful in life though. |

If you have learned Latin, then you have learned and understand all the grammar needed for any info-European language, and can also understand the structure of many others.
Plus Between 30 and 60% of words in European languages have a Latin origin.
I can quickly pick up words in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, some German, and others, due to knowing Latin. ( and often link them to a similar English word).

That was my thinking. Not that I continued and became fluent. I was at school in the late 80's and I though German might be a good thing to start learning from an international business perspective.
It didn't work out like that. It turns out I have little aptitude for languages. Of course, I didn't know that for a while after I had to make the choice.
I'd rather have done Latin. |

Probably something seemingley useless like learning a fairly obscure language or learning to play an unusual musical instrument. I find it's nice just to learn a new skill just for the pure joy of it, not whether it'll have any real world use.
Realistically if I could go back knowing what I know now I'd study something like photography. |

It happened to me, but with French, used to speak it really well, then one trip I pUlley into a garage, filled the bike and went in to pay and couldn't remember the words. ever since I have struggled to be understood and have no confidence in conversation weird. Be a midwife, I never got the grades at school
to go into it, so I would go back to my final two years and pass them, then go and study midwifery, I tried a few years ago to do a health and social care course, I say a few years ago, more like 11 years ago and two small children and a unhelpful husband and a full time job, so kinda took a back seat, I could have done one at my old job but kept being put back for it, three years I waited and waited so have up, I might try again, I don't know
