The red doors thing is about a subcontractor of G4S who are housing a lot of asylum seekers in... Manchester, I think, having red front doors on their property and properties with red doors being targets for abuse.

I'm sure they were just trying to find an easy way of distinguishing people for organisational reasons, but given the current atmosphere and historical context of marking people as "different", it's certainly a moment.

Kind of...the brought I. A contractor to provide free meals to the migrants in the area. It was just a cheap way of identifying eligible people. Sounds like a daily mail campaign where people are professionally outraged for them. Whoops. A company needing to keep costs down makes a choice based on cost now they have to invest in id cards because of complaints. .

Fuck. Sake. Hopefully, when all these terrorists we're letting into the country eventually pick up their arms and start to bomb every inch out of the UK; til there's nothing left; then they keep bombing the parts there's nothing left of, just to show their mates that they're in with the big boys, that you don't have to flee to another country with your family for help. Hopefully

If we weren't bombing the bejesus out of their countries, they wouldn't need to be here.

If we hadn't fucked things up so badly in that region by destabilising it and opening the way for IS, they probably wouldn't need to be here.

We brought this situation on ourselves.

Ok I'm having a dumb blonde moment!....

I'm watching corbyn on tv now being interviewed, he's taking about migrants coming into the uk.

What's the difference with migrant and refugee?.

In the French camps some have British passports assuming they are not fake! If they have them why are they living in a camp and not in the uk?.

Also if they are in that much crisis living in said camps how come on the reports on tv they are, well most holding up top of the range phones?.

Surely if you can afford that you would be better spending money on getting yourself out of the situation than selfies with media and politicians, or am I missing something

Maybe but the form of terrorism and subjugation that the Islamic fundamentalists has to be stopped.

You realise people had lives and owned things like 'phones before having to flee for their lives?

They may well be trying to get news of home or of family and friends they've been separated from.

How could they realistically use their 'phone to help get them out of the situation they're in?

I'm on the road with many who live in spain and france. They don't pay tax as they invoice from the UK, they don't pay tax there either as they keep below the threshold. They get free healthcare in the respective countries as they are still deemed brits and have E111s, some have had very expensive treatment abroad for cancer (not that I grudge them that). Many have holiday homes they let out, they don't employ local people nor pay tax on those.

Pretty sure most, not all, ex pats fall into those categories.

But obviously not earning money how are they paying for contracts etc or top ups???.

The guy I've just seen on the news has a new iPhone surely if he sold it got a cheap phone he could use the money to pay for a hostel rather than live in a tent in the freezing cold?. Or pay for his food etc rather than him living of charitable donations from others.

I'd say a phone was an essential tool for these people, not a luxury. Its also easy to remote top up, as I do with my son's phone. They could be getting topped up from someone else.

I didn't say i had the answers but not all of the refugees are as a result of allied bombing, their were problems at Sangatte refugee camp before 911 and once Saddam Hussain started gassing the Kurds the international community had to try and stop him. but in my opinion they should have finished desert storm 1 and then not left a vacuum for factions to fill .

London and France

"

What's the difference with migrant and refugee?.

"

A migrant is someone who moves from one country to another, usually with he intention of staying permanently.

There are several types of migrant

I am a migrant; I chose to move to France to live permanently

Economic migrants; move to change / enhance their careers/ jobs/ lifestyles, and general contribute to thier new country economically and by taxation.

Refugee:

"a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster."

Usually they have lost all their belongings and money, and are helped by a host country. Refugees may choose to/ become permanent migrants, or if circumstances change, return to their homeland.

Further category is " asylum seeker" much misused nowadays; but someone who has to leave their home country, because of unjust persecution ( normally political, religious or racial) and who seeks protection and assistance from another sympathetic country.

My great-great grandfather was an asylum seeker ( though the term didn't really exist in the 19th century, as he had to flee Hungary after a rather botched attempt at a revolution .

The current "Calais migrants " are a mix of the above; mostly straightforward refugees; but there are many who are simply using it as a way of getting into Europe/UK for monetary reasons.

Difficult to separate true refugees from those just using the system.

Problem not helped by the traffickers who are just making money out of it.

Have you ever been on the train from Charles de Gaulle to Gare du Nord? Passing Stade de France is frightening. Terrible situations and near shanty towns. They're locals, not refugees.

I'm in Frankfurt now and the situation is similar but not on the same scale.

These people have fallen off the radar.

that phone could be key to ultimately getting that. If you were stuck on a mountain and wanted help would you rather have a sleeping bag to keep you warm for a few days and a mars bar or a means to access real help to get you off the mountain?

They're in camps. Who are they going to sell things to? Where are they supposed to go shopping? They have no legal status to be where they are. I don't think they can stroll to the nearest town for supplies.

It's not like the money made from a second hand iphone would pay for very long in a hostel, even if they were able to access such facilities.

Really???? The guy I saw had a iPhone plus that's about £700 so for anyone living in those conditions I would say it's a massive amount of money to have.

It's a massive amount of money for most to be honest. If I was in those conditions my phone would be the first thing to go.

How could they realistically use their 'phone to help get them out of the situation they're in?

Of course I realise that I'm not stupid!!.

Maybe I'm wrong in thinking that the basics in life to

live are more important than luxuries like phones etc.

Is that the new price of the iphone or what they go for second hand? Where would you expect him to sell it? He's in a camp with other people in his situation. He can hardly put it on ebay!

How much would you expect a hostel to cost? Even if he got 2-3 weeks accommodation, if he were able to access such facilities, is that really going to help him? Where would he get a replacement 'phone from? Again, he can't exactly buy from ebay.

It does raise some interesting points.

For one thing, we generally consider refugees as being poor. One of the determining factors for the kind of mass migration that we are now seeing is that often it is not the poorest sections of societies that want and/or have the ability to move. Syria, for example, had a large and successful middle-class pre-war and it tends to be they who can afford to pay the people traffickers.

Add that to the way the internet and media have grown aspiration by providing windows into worlds that previously weren't available.

Mass migration has always been a factor in human politics, it always will be.

Absolutely. The most recent interview with a refugee I saw was with a man who had owned a chain of grocery stores and was very successful.

He was stuck in limbo in a camp with no rights and his background, success and wealth were no help to him at all.

There are scores of successful, professional people stuck in the camps.

Fair comments. Ive seen interviews with Syrian doctors and lawyers who have left, they also make the point that they are desperate to return to that country and lifestyle. A lifestyle they know they won't get by being a refugee in another country.

I think what people have a problem with is...they are already in a very nice country, and if they put as much energy into building a life for themselves in France instead of being obsessed with coming to Briton...then their lives would be in a lot better shape than it is now.

"Ok I'm having a dumb blonde moment!....

I'd say a phone was an essential tool for these people, not a luxury. Its also easy to remote top up, as I do with my son's phone. They could be getting topped up from someone else.

Someone could be topping it up I guess.

I don't see a phone as essential for them though as I think food, warmth, clothing as more important.

"

It's essential in trying to locate family members and loved ones, I'd think

difficult when the French won't let them. No? Also see my earlier post about French depravation. They have sites like Calais in Paris, much bigger too.

So why won't the French let them settle in France

I guess, like Cameron, to save upsetting the far right vote.

They have agreed to take 30k people in, and again purely guessing, that the ones at Calais are deemed to be heading to the UK and therefore not their issue.
