Do you think they argue over the definition of 'intelligent' (life form) as much as we do?
Are there a bunch of little green ones arguing over IQ vrs EQ somewhere? |

I imagine them turning up and saying (in Russian) "we've heard your broadcasts and have studied your language so we can talk to you". Of course they'd say this to an American (where else would aliens land) who would look at them blankly. Hours later an interpreter would arrive and explain to them that this planet has ~6,500 languages and then the aliens just looking back blankly until one of them says... "ffs, why?" |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
The coincidences that had to happen for us to evolve are so random that the odds are we are the only intelligent life *as we recognise it* in our galaxy. Not however in the universe.
Anyway, distances being what they are, we're unlikely to ever find out. |

Indeed it does; to stop us coordinating our activities properly!!! I'm always stunned by the number of people that defend this crazy status quo as if it has no negative effects.
How would you explain to an alien that we have 180 countries, ~6,500 languages even though the majority of people struggle to speak 2 and half the world is starving whilst the other half is obese!!! |

Tradition and identity is important
Look at the arguments to preserve Welsh
That said I genuinely don't think language is in the top ten of reasons why humans want to kill each other , I would not argue it is a condition resulting from the genetics, memes that cause tribal hatred |

I agree we are tribal in nature and that's the biggest problem. I just think languages reinforce that.
I also think that if the best thing you can say your identity is that you've added another language to the world then that's a sad state of affairs. Wales has many other things to be proud of rather than its language. In my opinion. |

Drake's equation (N = RfpneflfifcL) estimates that there are approximately 12,000 civilisations in our galaxy alone. So to answer the OP's question it is highly likely that we are not alone |

That's a good point. It's said the main drivers of human behaviour in the world are either money, sex, power or a combination of all three. I wonder if planet zog would have the same drivers? |

We haven't even scratched the surface. A new planet has possibly been found in our solar system. Absolutely fascinating. And then of course you have theoretical physicists talking about multiverses.... |

Well, there are 200 billion stars in this galaxy alone and 200 billion galaxies in merely the obvservable universe..hubble has discovered countless earthlike planets already in our galaxy..given the sheer vast size of just the observable universe, a person wud have to be a bit loopy to think we are alone..the reason for lack of mass visits is, despite technological advancement here, that there was sadly, as recently as approx. 70 years ago, horror such as Auschwitz on this planet..this and other atrocities large and small scale cud well be the reason for this backward planet's exclision from the Galactic Club. |

Mainly because the possible life- bearing solar systems are so many millions of light years apart, that a civilization will live and die out, before messages could be sent and received at the " nearest neighbour", let alone actually physically travel.
So until someone conquers the " faster than light speed " issue; no civilization can contact another. |

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.
The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth. |

There is the theory about worm holes in space, which you could travel through to reach somewhere else quicker, which gets around the distance travelled in light years conundrum. |

All very well, but current physics states that :
1. If "worm holes" exist: you have no idea where the " other end " is.
2. Even if you did know; the gravitational forces which would form a wormhole would destroy any structure or anybody that entered it.
So until we can re-write physics ( which we are trying to fo all the time) it can't happen . |

You are talking about "our" current physics. Just because we don't fully understand worm holes it's not to say another much more advanced civilisation than ours doesn't. An alien race could have a much better understanding of physics than us, and much more advanced technology too, so they could be using worm holes as we speak. |

No not really, I've watched many docs but it's the genuine government inquiry's where you really have to say, we've ruled out everything, the witnesses are beyond reproach, the data from radar and cross evidence matches..
What's left but the undeniable fact that something other than earthly landed!.
Ive always found the French government report by cometa to be the reality of what we should be saying...
Having said that, I don't think many people could deal with it being officially believable |

If the big bang theory holds true, then the universe is about the same age, if evolution is relitivly constant then any intelligent life will be currently working out how to get to their nearest planet, and wondering how to write a message that may get an answer on their version of fab.
Not much risk of them turning up here in the next 1000 years, so probably not my problem

I'm thinking we're just the neighbours, nobody wants to know.
All the other neighbours are having wee intergalactic soirees.
All dancing, all singing, possibly ending in intergalactic group sex soirees.
We never get invited, cause they think,
we're nice enough people,but after a few bevies,we'll nick their booze,break stuff,then start a fight,cause they looked at us.
They could have a point.

Perhaps earth is the galactic equivalent of the whining single man on fab:
" we send loads of messages but no-one replies"
Perhaps we need a galactic verification....

"some funny perceptions " .
Some culturally beliefs run deep.
We can't even think that aliens would visit for any other reason than to see HUMANS!!.
Oh yeah earth was made for us and the earth is the centre of the universe!.
The earth is what 6 billon years through its ten billon year life expectancy in that 6 billon years the earth's seen 5 99% life extinction events caused by rapid climate change?... To imagine they've been here just for US, it's like saying we only study whales or dolphins or chimps!.
If you think about it, life forms on this planet have consisted of the 4 most abundant elements found in the universe less helium which is an inert gas...
So really it would be quite reasonable to presume other life et lifeforms would be similar |

"Drake's equation (N = RfpneflfifcL) estimates that there are approximately 12,000 civilisations in our galaxy alone. So to answer the OP's question it is highly likely that we are not alone
And yet the Fermi paradox is that despite the likelihood we haven't found it yet.
Mainly because the possible life- bearing solar systems are so many millions of light years apart, that a civilization will live and die out, before messages could be sent and received at the " nearest neighbour", let alone actually physically travel.
So until someone conquers the " faster than light speed " issue; no civilization can contact another..
I think we've been visited many times over thousands of years, how much interest they show us, is a bit like us examining the animal kingdom!.
There's just too much evidence to write off visitations as nonsense
Have you watched the Ancient aliens documentary series by any chance? .
Having said that, I don't think many people could deal with it being officially believable"
Ancient Aliens documentary series is well worth a watch, looks at ancient civilisations like the Egyptians (how were the pyramids built?) and the Aztecs and the Mayans too (how did the Mayans obtain very detailed intricate knowledge of astronomy?). It also looks a lot at ancient mythology such as the Egyptian gods, Mayan gods and the Greek gods, could they have actually been aliens who visited here but ancient civilisations thought of them as gods? It also looks at a lot of other things like Stonehenge and ley lines on the earth, the nasca lines (huge drawings which were made on the earth hundreds of years ago which can only be seen from the sky long before humans ever invented flight). All very interesting there is also theory that we live in a multi dimensional universe, and maybe aliens have developed the ability to travel between dimensions? That is something Aleiseter Crowley looked into with the occult, which interestingly around him and the occult has a lot of the pyramid symbology about it (going back to the Egyptian link) could the pyramid have something to do with inter dimensional travel?
Crowley himself wrote a book about an encounter with a non earthly being who told him "today they call us demons, tomorrow they will call us something else" so could it have been an alien? |

The locker scene in men in black explains everything.
Universes within universes within.....
We are but a speck of dust to higher beings.
What's considered massive in our universe is probably a sub atomic particle in the next... |

"No such thing as aliens god or ghosts." .
Well you look to evidence and reason, then think of it as probability just like anything else.
I'd say weighing up the evidence for and against the common held belief in a God or at least what God is, it's probably very very very slim.
Ghosts, again very little evidence that holds up to scrutiny and none which can't be explained by other means.
UFOs however discounting the 99%of sightings leaving you a few dozen of cases can't be explained away and so however illogical the conclusion, you have to give it a certain credence...
Say possible but probable for ghosts
And probable but impossible for ufo sightings. |
