Just read about a child neglect case on Wales. And yes, the parents should be locked up and sterilised.

But scurvy? Isn't that a hazard to pirates? Not people living in Wales

Parents allowing the child to eat what it likes, or feeding the child an unbalanced diet maybe.

There are more children with vitamin deficiency now than there were during the privations of the Second World War.

Many children are given far too much food with little nutritional value.

It's a parents job to ensure their children eat fruit, veg etc - however 'faddy' they are. I'm an old fashioned bitch! If my kids don't eat their veg, they don't get a desert - simple but effective!

You can't blame lack of education because the information has been out there for ages now and junk food is called junk food for a reason!

Many people can't be arsed to peel and cook a vegetable or shop around for reasonably priced fruit - it's as simple as that!

And yes - I think they should be prosecuted!!

I am with you on the old fashioned bit, even give them the tempter of showing them dessert before we eat haha, and its always something they loved. They still have to excuse themselves form the table too - i tend not to call it old fashioned though, just good manners and respect which hopefully they keep.

Scurvy is becoming a growing issue in UK; lack of vitamin C

As is Ricketts lack of vitamin D linked with calcium.)

Diet ( in many places in UK ) is getting worse and worse .

I call it old fashioned because I'm one of the older mums in the primary school my daughter goes to! The other mums were horrified when I told them my 'house rule' - they said the veg should be offered but that's all!

My family are also in the minority because we all sit round the table for meals and eat together. It's when we discuss everyone 's day and that's as vital to the family's wellbeing as eating a healthy meal in my opinion!

From what I read and saw there were mental health issues and the poor boy fell under the radar of all the normal agencies.

I have no idea how the poor boy died of scurvy but the parents appear adequately nourished even a little overweight. Unless he died from an obscure disease that causes the body not to absorb vitamin c I would class their neglect as murder.

In general in some cases poverty is the cause of poor diet, in others laziness and in some ignorance. There's no effort involved with frozen vegetables or a tin of beans so I would never accept laziness as a reason but the other two causes can surely be eradicated.

Having brought up a "fussy eater" who genuinely looked like a bag of bones at one point I sympathise with the struggle some parents have but even cereals with milk and baked beans have nutritional value.

Some parents like to think of their children as 'little adults' who are ready to go around making all their own decisions and they like to see themselves as their children's best friend. Not here.

We all ate together at the table and were often shocked when other kids came for meals to discover that they were unable to use cutlery or had only ever eaten at a table in places like McDonald's.

We only rarely had desserts, usually birthdays and the odd occasion if we had guests.

Peachy old fashioned not really you care and look after your children well. I dont want a nanny state but there are children and some adults who need help and government cuts or the (any) goverment not focusing on the right things will cause problems. Just little things like withdrawing milk for school children can cause problems.

That a child can be entrusted to someone with known mental health issues, with no safeguards, is surprising.

That a child can be allowed to develop scurvy through parental ignorance, is sad.

That a child can be allowed to die once two separate professionals have flagged serious concerns to social services, and subsequently the full details kept quiet for 5 years - now that is shocking. Especially when one remembers that in England all it takes is a simple spelling mistake...

Yep, it was an extension of a Labour policy from 1968. She also argued that the free milk should remain for Primary kids, but that it should be paid for out of the Social Services budget. She wanted to retain all the education budget for providing proper school books and repairing the dilapidated buildings they inherited from the previous administration...

Definitely with you there..

I was made to eat what was given..that or nothing at all.

boy do I love my parents for that now! Means I love my food and am always round the shops trying All different manner of things..I like going into the Caribbean and Chinese and polish supermarkets and all those places and finding weird and wonderful new veggies and fruit and all kinds of lovely stuff to take home and cook when I'm able.

Also means I'm pretty guilt free when I do have a treat and have a bit of valueless crap

Big shouts to parents that are parents to their children and not overgrown mates

I don't think this is old-fashioned at all - it's called good parenting! I'm exactly the same...home cooked, balanced meals and lots of fruit and veg, with processed meals a rarity. Even pizzas are homemade in our house.

I work and rush around after the kids so lack of time is a poor excuse in my opinion...it's just laziness. Since ready meals and junk food cost more than fresh ingredients price is also not a valid reason - Aldi, Lidl and the supermarket budget ranges are perfectly good quality.

I get fed up of the number of fussy friends my children have had round who won't even try anything different, with the mums saying they'll only eat pizza, fish fingers or sausages (and not just little ones but teenagers too!).

My eldest 3 can all cook and bake, and know how to eat healthily. 2 of them also have coeliac disease so I have to be extra careful that they have a balanced diet.

Parents who can't or won't feed their children properly should be prosecuted - and I include those I see regularly on my way to work feeding their toddlers with a Greggs sausage roll for breakfast!

The uk?"

"Eugenics " was a popular policy in the 1930s;

And many countries have had compulsory sterilisation programmes: some racially and ethnically based; some based on perch ever " intelligence" some based on population control, some purporting to be part of the " battle"against certain diseases or genetic issues.

The USA

Canada

Israel

Germany

Sweden

China

India

Russia

South Africa

Peru

Czechoslovakia /Czech Republic

Japan

Switzerland

Romania

To name a few:

Not UK; though a bill was introduced in Parliament, but was defeated.

Many other countries may have had schemes, but it is unclear.

The USA had the widest and most far reaching scheme, mostly directed at mental health and the so called " feeble minded".

I do disagree with making children eat all of everything offered to them though.

If my children said they didn't want to eat a certain food then i asked them to try it, if they tried it but didn't like it then i would simply say they had to eat something with similar values such as if they didn't like a vegetable then they had to eat another, i personally hate turnips and parsnips and was forced to eat them as a child and it made me sick, i never eat them now as an adult but i do eat lots of other vegetables instead.

As long as my children ate something from each food group then i was happy with that. They grew up healthy and happy and ate lots of different foods

Nah, Labour politicians withdrawing school milk, then 40 years later still trying to convince the voters that it was Maggie, causes problems. Mainly one of trust...

That has nothing to do with scurvy though !

1971 thatcher education minister milk withdrawn for all school children no brainer! Yes all school children! "

And since this child wasn't at school, and it's not the 1970s, it has even less to do with it!

I'm happy to defend all the positive things Labour governments have achieved, but if you keep peddling their mis-truths, I'm happy to keep batting them back...

I was thinking that when I was stripping wallpaper earlier. The fault lies with his parents, if one had mental health issues the other should have stepped in, withdrawal of milk from school children had no bearing on it and since he was home schooled largely irrelevant.

Ok, how about "Subsequent to the Labour Party withdrawing free school milk for all 11 to 15 year olds in 1968, the Conservatives stopped paying for universal free school milk from the Education Budget for primary children in 1971. Additional money was given instead to local authorities so that they could choose either to fund free school milk for all, or charge those parents deemed 'better off'."

Could we agree on that?

(I was still getting free school milk when Princess Anne was married, and that was Nov 1973... #justsayin)

Ps I may have been wrong about being prepared to bat it back and forth all night, if all you want to do is shout "Thatcher, Thatcher, milk-snatcher", with your hands over your ears, then that's your prerogative...

Yes you are right its all about an earlier thread that said cuts by any gov even things like milk can make a difference. The fact nobody from anywhere checked on him because of cuts (possibly) is relevant.

It's just awful but it is very easy for a child to slip through the cracks.

Complete rubbish. The boy was last seen by the authorities in 2005. There were no fudging cuts between 2005 - 2010 so how exactly are you explaining that nobody saw the boy for those 5 years if cuts were the problem?

It's wholly on the parents. As it usually is in these sad cases.

Exactly! It doesn't look like the parents had any trouble feeding themselves.

While I firmly believe that the responsibility for the welfare of out children rests entirely with us as parents how far do you think wider society should take responsibility for children. Neighbours, family, friends etc?

Interesting question, in developing countries there is simply no system to help with child raising whether you have mental health problems or not. In the case the parents were unable, the extended family would normally step in, usually grandparents. I think that's nicer than living in a nanny state...

Essex.

You need to get your priorities right...

If you need the latest 50" TV and games console, something has to give.

Children don't need nappies, food or bedding when the latest GTA is on the shelves...

It's your responsibility as a decent person to look out for others around you, but if there were no visible external signs of neglect then I don't know how anyone but his own parents would have known just how deficient his diet was, unless there were other adult family members living in the house all the time.

Friends, neighbours, relatives are all part of someone's life and should play a positive role in it, but the responsibility is ultimately not theirs.

With the social services, police, schools, health services - there may indeed have been failings, but they wouldn't need this role at all if the parents had been doing the most basic job of feeding their child properly in the first place. If people weren't shit, social services wouldn't even need to exist.

"There are more children with vitamin deficiency now than there were during the privations of the Second World War.

So much love for this. Top parent!
