Do you feel obliged to go in when you've a heavy cold, coughing, spluttering and sneezing, passing all of your germs onto your innocent colleagues ?
Or do you do the honourable thing and take a couple of days off, thereby recovering and not infecting half the work force ? |

I hate people who come in when they're ill and sit there whinging, moaning and spreading the germs. I came home early yesterday afternoon and I've rearranged all my stuff today to next week, no one would be getting any sense out of me today anyway. |

The ones that wind me up the most are those who sit in a closed office, spreading their germs to everyone else - whilst piously spouting off proudly that they never take time off sick!
Inconsiderate arses. |

It's one thing being not able to work because you are feeling rough. But the whole spreading the germs thing is a misconception, certainly by the time a person is displaying symptoms of a common cold they are past the point where the cold is at it's most virulent. I.E. you've already infected everyone before you knew you had it yourself so staying away from work for that reason is pointless. |

True. But they might as well not be there anyway because they're not going to be doing any actual work. And the coughing and sneezing and sniffing is fucking annoying to listen to |

If I'm ill I stay at home.
If I have a sniffle I work from home.
It's only fair on everybody. However not everybody has generous sick pay or the option to work from home.

I hate the "crying off" attitude. There's no shame in being unwell and acknowledging that you're not going to get much work done while you feel ill. I'd rather not be served by someone in a shop or seen by a nurse or have a meeting with someone coughing and sneezing all over me, it's just selfish. |

I've had a heavy cold all week and been to work, although I did leave early on Tuesday.
We're currently behind due to technical issues and having a team member short affects the team massively and means we have to work excessive overtime (we've currently worked 12 days straight). So its a case of 'suck it up buttercup'
Besides, its just a bloody cold. |

It's a difficult one. On one hand I'd love to easily take time off when I'm feeling like shit. But then I work for a company that frowns on its employees taking any time off sick!
So while I agree with you all about not spreading your germs around the office, it's sometimes preferable to getting pressure and shit from the boss! |

I'd have to take the time off as I work in a cafe and I don't think my customers would want me serving them food!!
When I was a carer and we used to get d and v bugs (over three years we had two really bad bouts) we were told we had to take 48 hours off from point of last lot is sickness, well we never got paid for being off sick so the amount of people that came back early was ridiculous, let alone the woman that still came in throwing up and shitting every five mins, it's not because she couldn't afford it but because she felt we couldn't cope without her as a lot of staff was off (keeping it at home!!), well lady what's the fucking point?! Your still spreading it around and you aren't actually working because your heads in a toilet!!! She's the same woman who had her arm broken by a resident and told she couldn't drive (she lied to us saying it was fine) and still came in, could she actually do the basic of tasks? No she bloody couldn't!!!!

Care company I use to work for if off sick vomiting or whatever the moment you stopped you had to go back in ,or they made your life hell. No time off for colds .the worse was when a lady was off and actually in hospital and the boss phoned her and her family daily asking when back .strangly they have a high turn over of staff.
If your ill stay home no one else wants your germs . |

For a care company that's grossly irresponsible. For cases of D&V you're supposed to be symptom free for 48hrs before returning to work as passing it on to elderly or frail people is potentially life threatening. |

It's frowned upon in our place to be off sick. That used to really intimidate me so I dragged myself in regardless. He made life awkward for me for a lot of years. When someone is a bully, it's tricky to deal with.
As the years have gone by and I've learned to accept that our office manager is an absolute tool, I don't care so much. I put in the hours and I'm happy to work from home rather than spread my germs. He can go fuck himself. I think he's a chump. He knows I think he's a chump. There's nothing he can do about that.
My roomie has two young kids and doesn't need extra illness so now if I'm sick then I'm staying at home. I've never skived work so my conscience is absolutely clear. |

The problem i have is even when I'm ill i have to get up and sort the kids out etc so as I'm up and dressed i may as well go into work. I can't remember the last time i was properly ill though. It is Fucking annoying listening to people at work with colds though. Since i started back in the office in September there seems to constantly be at least one person with a cold. I think i must live in my own little bubble as I've managed to avoid it |

Most germs are passed on by hand contact so as long as you blow your nose, cough, sneeze etc into disposable tissues, throw them away and wash your hands, its fine to go to work with a common cold in most instances.
I work in a health field where passing on a cold to a patient will mean they could potentially get seriously ill, but with the correct infection control techniques the risk is low.
We still go to work with a cold because if there's not enough staff the care delivered is at best poor, at worst, dangerous, not everyone is in a position to rake a few days off here and there with a minor illness without affecting others! |

I get why you have to go to work, but that doesn't mean other people are "raking off a few days here and there with a minor illness" how dismissive does that sound? Yeah some people pull sickies but others have to take time off for actually being ill. if I'm sick I'm sick and I don't think I should have somebody telling me I'm skiving or taking the piss just because they don't do a job where they can have sick leave. It's that attitude that makes people afraid to be off when they shouldn't be at work. |

A cold is a minor illness to the majority of the population, if youre someone who has other health problems it can be more serious and then of course take time off.

All depends on the individual and how you feel.
In the past 14 years I have probably taken 7 days off sick in total. The only time I won't go in ia if I physically cannot get out of bed.
Everyone is different and some people seriously take the piss with using the illness card far too often "Because the doctor has given them a note".
You see them a week later full of bounce and often with a new hair cut too. That pissed me off big time |

If i feel ill i take time off and i wish everyone did that because for me it's dangerous when i catch a cold, because of another health issue a cold ends up as a very bad chest infection with 2 different antibiotics and steriods and the strong possibilty of being admitted to hospital !
So everyone please think of others when you bring your germs to work ! |

Ahhh yes in an ideal world this would be great wouldn't it but the bosses have other ideas, even if your on your deathbed they would want you to come in, one woman I know couldn't physically walk because she was so ill once, I had to sit in a back to work interview with her (it was coupled with a meeting over the level of time off she had too, which at our place if your off more than three times in a year to get hauled into the office for a disciplinary) I had to watch this woman demonstrate to our manager on all fours what she was like, it was humiliating.
Hence why when I had another serious bout of depression in September last year and they were on the verge of firing me, I walked out. Care is not a job I would do again because in the places I've worked in, the bosses don't give a fuck about the care of their staff.
Rant over lol

Lol it's impossible to never catch a cold whether at work or not.
I'm not say you're wrong, just that it's not so cut and dried as that.
Imagine if all NHS staff stayed off work with a cold, hospitals would be closing wards and cancelling ops all over the place.
I don't work for the NHS but I used to, and everyone dragged themselves in when I'll because they knew the consequences if they didn't.
Not a great situation, but a necessary one. |

In my place of work you can't win - if someone comes in when they're clearly ill they're told they shouldn't have bothered, but anyone who is off sick is made to feel guilty when they return.
Mums especially were singled out when their children were ill and they had no other carers, until I once brought my poorly 5 year old to work with me to make a point - she was absolutely no bother but the manager was horrified and sent us home. Now it's understood that when your child is sick sometimes there's no other option than to stay with them |

9 times out of 10, I'll go into work if I've just got a cold. I only get so many days paid sick leave per year so I save them for if/when I really need them.
I just save any sneezes for those I don't particular like. |

People should not go to work when they have something as infectious as a cold. It's antisocial, could be spread to others and possibly make another very seriously ill or die. It's avoidable. I rarely get anything but would stay home for rest. |

I'm still working on a phased return after being seriously ill last year, I was off 3 months and will be stuck with this for the rest of my life, being 23 at the time it's a hard thing to accept.
I get plenty of comments and piss taking at work.
Doesn't matter what illness you get, people will always take the piss
