why do people feel the need to put professional on their profile?

Depends. Why do you feel the need to put gym fit on yours? It could be because they want to attract people they consider professional or because that's the word they consider an accurate description of themselves.

I suppose it could act as a two way filter. A bit like pseudo legal horse shit people put on their profile to use an American law which does not exist to threaten an Australian educational institute not to do something perfectly legal in the uk.

I.e. when you see it on a profile you can quickly gain a deep understanding of the people responsible.

No I was thinking more along the lines of if I were to use that statement, the people I mean by it would know what I meant. So if you don't know if it applies to you, it doesn't.

But then I don't think there's anything wrong with someone choosing to describe themselves as professional or wanting to meet professional people - which you obviously do.
